Mrs. Opal J. Laws

82, of 2345 N. Seminary St., Galesburg, died at 4:50 AM Friday, May 31, 2002 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born April 1, 1920 in Grand Chain, IL to George and Essie (Crossland) Parker. She married John Mims in Galesburg. She then married John Laws in Galesburg. He preceded her in death in 1974.
She is survived by her step-mother, Margaret Parker of Peoria, IL, a brother: John L. Parker of Waukegan, IL, three half brothers, Charles Parker, whom she raised, of Galesburg, Dexter and Marcus Parker, both of Peoria , three half sisters, Rhonda, Cecelia, and Tanya Parker, all of Peoria, and several cousins including: Willabell (and Floyd “Smokey”)Williams, Betty (and Donald) Hall-Lawton, Sam Hall, John (and Joan) Hall, and Rolland Hall, all of Galesburg, Geraldine Mitchell, Peoria, IL, and Louise (and Jim) Porter, Waterloo, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She worked in housekeeping at Cottage Hospital for 8 years, was the supervisor of housekeeping at Americana Nursing Home, now Heartland Health Care Center for 10 years, worked for Western Home Services as a caregiver for 4 years, and at the time of her death was in her 12th year of service as a school crossing guard for Galesburg School District 205.
She had lived in Galesburg since 1945 and was a member of Second Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Grand Chain High School.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday June 5, 2002 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with the Rev. L.G. Trammell officiating. Visitation will be from Noon to 1:00 PM Wednesday at the Chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Second Baptist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mr. Lowell G. Swartout

86, of 219 Duffield Ave. Galesburg IL died 9:30 AM Thursday May 30, 2002 at his home.
He was born March 7, 1916 in Coal Valley IL to Henry and Orpha (Stormont) Swartout. He married Dorothy M. Johnston Brining in Reynolds IL on May 28, 1949. She survives.
Also surviving are a son, Robert E. Brining of Aurora IL, a daughter-in-law, Connie Brining of Lacey WA, four brothers, Dale Swartout of Reynolds IL, LaVerne Swartout of Aledo IL, Raymond Swartout of LeMars IA and Richard Swartout of Milan IL, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John L. Brining, and a sister.
He was a farmer until 1969. He later worked as a manager for the Liberty/Wareco Oil Company from 1969 to1983. He lived in Reynolds, Rio and later rural Galesburg IL. He attended Reynolds High School. He was a member of the East Main Congregational United Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be 7:30 PM Monday June 3, 2002 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with the Rev. Phyllis Sterr officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Monday at the Chapel. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday June 4, 2002 at the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island IL. Memorials can be made to the East Main Congregational United Church of Christ.

Mrs. Shirley L. Munson

73, of 2478 - 140th St. in Galesburg died at 12:50 AM Wednesday May 29, 2002 in Marigold Health Care Center.
She was born August 23, 1928 in Aledo, IL to Ray and Edythe (Gates) Saxer. She married Clifford L. Munson on September 30, 1956 in Galesburg IL. He survives.
She is survived by cousins Eileen and Warren Toal in Omaha, NE.
She worked as a school teacher in Knox County for forty years, retiring in 2000. She was a member of the Coldbrook Christian Church. She was a member of the Ontario Home Extension, Rio Women’s Club and the Coldbrook Women’s Club. She graduated from Galesburg High School and Western Illinois Teachers College.
Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Friday May 31, 2002 in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg, with Rev. Becky Ingram officiating. Memorials can be made to the Coldbrook Christian Church.

Mr. Clarence Thomas “Tom” Bogard, Jr.

73, of 371 Kenwick Dr., Galesburg, died at 6:00 PM Wednesday, May 29, 2002 at home.
He was born February 20, 1929 in Galesburg to Clarence Thomas Sr. and Sophia (Herrick) Bogard. He married Marie Witherell on May 5, 1951 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving is his mother, Sophia Bogard of Galesburg, a son, Douglas Bogard of Apollo Beach, FL, three daughters, Laura (and Steve) Laux of Portland, IN, Julie Kinsman of Temecula, CA and Jayne (and Randy) Wall of Mission Viejo, CA, a brother, Dick Bogard of Huntington Beach, CA, three sisters, Carol Sheley of Port La Vaca, TX, Eleanor Kendrick of Freeport, IL and Virginia Horaney of Alisio Viejo, CA, nine grandchildren and a great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father.
He worked in sales and served as a general manager in the medical supply industry for 30 years, retiring in 1998. He had lived in Portland, IN, La Habra, CA, Temecula, CA, and returned to Galesburg 3 years ago. He was a 1947 graduate of Galesburg High School. He was of Presbyterian faith. He served in the United States Army with active field duty for 2 ½ years during the Korean War. He was an avid and regular golfer at Bunker Links in Galesburg.
Funeral and burial will be later in Pacific View Memorial Park Cemetery and Funeral Services, Corona del Mar, CA.
Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday May 31, 2002 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Richard J. Engels

69, of 2456 Henderson Trail Rd. Rio, IL died 7:10 PM Tuesday May 28, 2002 at his home.
He was born May 28, 1933 in Kewanee, IL to August and Mary (VanDeGenachte) Engels. He married Nancy Riggen on October 24, 1953 in Kewanee, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother, Mary Engels of Kewanee, IL, two sons, Kevin Engels of Victoria IL and Kerry (and Jennifer) Engels of Burgeson TX, three daughters, Pamela (and Steve) Engels-Pickrel of Woodhull IL, Penny (and Russell) Moline of Alexis IL and Cindy (and Clint) Ralston of Woodhull IL, three brothers, Marvin (and Joan) Engels of Texarkana TX, David (and Diane) Engels of Visalia CA and Vernon (and Eileen) Engels of Galva IL, a sister Laurie (and Richard) Kubiak of Kewanee IL, ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a special life long friend, Rollin Fesler of Kewanee, IL. He is preceded in death by his father, grandparents, one brother, twin granddaughters, Allison and Adrian Engels in 1981, and another granddaughter, Hope Ryan Johnson in 1981.
He worked as a Shear Operator at International Harvestor in East Moline IL, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the St. Johns Catholic Church in Woodhull, IL. He served in the US Army as a Private from 1953 to 1955 in Fort Ord CA. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, member of the Mayo Clinic Transplant Group, a long time member of the Hook & Bullet Club until November of 2001. He was an avid sportsman-enjoying hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed woodworking. He graduated from Galva High School in 1952. He grew up in Kewanee. He later lived in Galva, Woodhull and then Rio IL.
He was a pioneer in Cardiac Research working with Drug Companies since 1972 to evaluate experimental drugs, which today are very instrumental in treating heart disease. He also was a pioneer in open heart surgery, having the first of many in 1972. He was the first heart transplant performed at Rush Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago IL on November 13, 1986 performed by Drs. Armando Susmano, Roger Billhardt, David Monson which all remained his friends from 1972-2002.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday June 1, 2002 at St. Francis Assisi Catholic Church in Kewanee IL with the Rev. Don J. Fitzpatrick officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday May 31, 2002 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rosary Services will be recited at 8:00 PM by Rev. Ernest Pizzamiglio. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery Kewanee IL with Military Rites by Kewanee American Legion Post #31. Memorials can be made to the family to establish a fund for the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Rush Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago IL.

Mr. David A. Berger

44, of 1524 Russell Ave., Galesburg, died at 5:21 PM, Sunday, May 26, 2002 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born June 3, 1957 in Muskegon, MI to David Allen and Phoebe (McMann) Berger. He married Susette Marie Legg on August 16, 1996 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving is his mother, Phoebe Bolan of Denver, CO, a son, Joseph Robert Fletcher of Denver, CO, two daughters, Jennifer Marie Berger of Muskegon, MI and Angel Vlena (and Donald) Adams of LaFayette, IL, two sisters, Angela (and Jerry) Mattox of Denver, CO and Debbie Marie Berger of Muskegon, MI, three grandsons and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry Berger in 1982, his father and a brother.
He was a crane operator at Butler Manufacturing Company in Galesburg for the past 6 years and was a member of the United Steel Worker’s Union Local #2629. He had lived in Galesburg for the past 11 years. He graduated from Orchard View High School in Michigan. He served in the California National Guard. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Funeral services will be 8:00 PM Thursday May 30, 2002 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be from 6:00PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at the Chapel. A private family graveside memorial service will be held later. Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Virgieline M. “Virgie” Wright

81, of 1751 Indiana Dr., Galesburg, IL died at 10:50 AM Saturday May 25, 2002 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born on October 15, 1920 in Andover, IL to Carl Sigfred and Medora (Stephenson) Cederberg. She married John W. Wright on November 28, 1940 in Galesburg. He survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Nancy J. Bach of Davenport, IA and a grandson, Jeffrey B. Bach of Davenport, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Dennis Cederberg, and two sisters, Martha Zander and Marie Engstrand.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, many of its Circles, and it’s Choir. She was active in the Republican Party and was an Election Judge. She was a member of the Sweet Adeline’s, the P.T.A and a volunteer for the Galesburg Research Hospital all in Galesburg, IL. She was a 1938 Galesburg High graduate.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday May 29, 2002 at the First Lutheran Church in Galesburg with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM Wednesday at the Church. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg, IL. Memorials can be made to the First Lutheran Church. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ora L. “Bud” Ide

74, of 141 Highland Ave. Galesburg, IL, died at 6:40 AM Saturday May 25, 2002 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, IL.
He was born on July 4, 1927 in Macomb, IL to Ora Alvin and Evelana (Hensley) Ide. He married Dora D. Frakes on April 8, 1954 in Macomb, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Jack Ide of Lampasas, TX and Larry Ide of West Menister, CO, a daughter, Sandra D. (and Michael) Olin of Galesburg, IL, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
He worked for Outboard Marine Corp. Gale Division in Galesburg. Then he was a machine operator at the former Alton Box Corp. in Galesburg for over 20 years, retiring on July 4, 1991.
He was of the Baptist faith. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Macomb, IL. He was a US Army Veteran in the 5th Armored Division serving in Germany.
Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Wednesday May 29, 2002 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with the Rev. Byron Hand officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30PM to 1:30PM Wednesday at the Chapel. Entombment will be at the Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Galesburg, IL with military rites by the Ralph M. Ms. Karen J. Cody

56, 170 S. West St., Galesburg, died at 6:41 AM Saturday, May 25, 2002 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born January 15, 1946 in Galesburg to Delmar and Goldie (Kling) Reed. She married James R. Cody in Galesburg on December 1, 1968.
She is survived by a son, James V. Cody of Savona, Italy, two daughters, Lisa (and Paul) Long of Abingdon, IL and Buffi King of Georgia, IL, seven grandchildren and a great grandchild.
She had worked as a nursing tech at OSF St. Mary Medical Center and Cottage Home Health Care retiring in 1997. She was a 1966 graduate of Galesburg High School in 1966. She was a member of First Lutheran Church. She was a member and past officer of the Moose Lodge 880.
Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Thursday May 30, 2002 in Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30PM to 1:30 PM Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the family or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mr. Roy J. Morlan

75, 857 Knox Rd 2200N Wataga, IL died 5:50 AM Tuesday May 21, 2002 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center Galesburg IL.
He was born April 14, 1927 in Engleside AR to Roy and Julia (Talley) Morlan. He married Mary L. Swank on October 9, 1948 in Galesburg IL. She survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Belle (and Edwin) Glass of Woodhull, IL, Linda (and Patrick) Ronk of Galesburg IL, Janet (and Eldon) Grover of Altona IL and Cheryl (and Richard) Swanson of Galva IL, two sisters, Lela McDaniel of Salem, VA and Julia Belle Amsbery of Bird City KS, 20 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by one son, Jerry Morlan in 1973, three brothers, and three sisters.
He worked as a welder for Maytag for 37 ½ years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served in the Army during World War II.
Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Friday May 24, 2002 in Knoxville Cemetery with the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 presenting military honors. Visitation will be 12:00 to 1:00 PM Friday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the family.
