Mr. John Perry Hardin, Galesburg Chapel

54, 39 Arnold St., Galesburg, died at 9:03 PM, Wednesday, July 30, 2003 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born May 19, 1949 in Monmouth, the son of Dr. Arthur and Dorothy Cox Hardin.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Nichole Hardin, Peoria, IL and Ashley Hardin, West Peoria, IL, 2 grandchildren, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was the lead operator for the Galesburg Sanitary District Treatment Plant for 27 years. He retired in 2001.
He graduated in 1967 from Yorkwood High School and attended Eureka College. He had lived in Galesburg since 1973. He attended the Little York United Methodist Church, Little York, IL.
He was a United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He served for 4 years aboard the USS Coral Sea and was a Petty Officer Ordnance Man Third Class.
Graveside services will be 1 PM Tuesday in Greenmound Cemetery, Keithsburg, IL. Visitation will be 10 to 11 AM Tuesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mr. Danny Lee Joseph, Galesburg Chapel

56, 1184 S. Cedar St., Galesburg, died at 2:50 AM Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at home.
He was born April 13, 1947 in Galesburg, the son of Anthony Nick and Edith F. Frymire Joseph. He married Jackie Asher in 1967 in Missouri, Chris Kilgore in 1973 in Galesburg, and Jan Mendenhall in 1988 in Galesburg.
He is survived by his mother, Edith Joseph of Galesburg, 4 sons, Danny, Jr., and Jeff, both of Galesburg, Rodney in Ocala, FL, and Tony in Abingdon, 2 daughters, Tammy in Wataga, IL and Dawn in Knoxville, IL, a step daughter, Dusty in Peoria, 5 brothers, Donald (and JuDee), Mike, Joe (and Debbie), Gary, and Phillip (and Karen), all of Galesburg, 3 sisters, Carol (and Gary) Denniston and Janet (and Doug) Hall, both of Galesburg and Mary (and Jerry) Montgomery, Marble Falls, TX, 16 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and 2 brothers.
He had been a roofer for Dower’s Roofing in Galesburg for many years. He had also worked for Rowe Manufacturing and Maytag, both in Galesburg. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Galesburg. He was a US Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War for 2 years.
Graveside services will be 2:30 PM Friday in St. Joseph Cemetery with Rev. Joseph Presley officiating. Military rites will be accorded by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Visitation will be 1 to 2 PM Friday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the family.

Mrs. Ila F. Algren, Galesburg Chapel

84, of 1519 Florence Avenue, Galesburg, IL, died at 7:35 AM Tuesday July 29, 2003 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born on November 17, 1918 in Henderson County, IL to Percy and Pearl (Norris) Lipes. She married Chester Algren in Galesburg, IL on January 26, 1937. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1989.
She is survived by three sons Gary Algren and Rodney (and Letty) Algren, both of Birmingham, AL and Richard (and Pawnee) Algren of Galesburg, IL, a daughter, Cherie (and Clifford) Yeomans of Galesburg, IL, four sisters, Mary Arthur of CO, June Danner of Galesburg, IL, Ann Hughes of CO and Gladys Stegall of Burlington, IA, two brothers, David Lipes of Moline, IL and Eddie Lipes of Milan, IL, 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, Three brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
She owned the C & I Sandwich Shop from 1959 to 1976. Prior to that she owned the Ferris Cafe. She was a member of the Emmanuel Methodist Church in Galesburg.
Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Thursday July 31, 2003 at Alexis (IL) Cemetery with Mr. Rodney Algren officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM Thursday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Emmanuel Methodist Church.

Mr. Donald Lee Mahnesmith, Galesburg Chapel

41, of 236 N. Kellogg St. Apt. B Galesburg, IL, died at 2:45 AM, Monday July 28, 2003 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born on August 17, 1961 in Joliet IL to Donald L. and Charlene Ann (Plue) Riggs, Sr. He was later adopted by Wesley Dean Mahnesmith, Sr. He was engaged to Patty Ann Hickman of Galesburg, IL, with whom he made his home. She survives.
Also surviving is his mother, Charlene Ann Mahnesmith of Galesburg, IL, a step mother, Gloria Riggs of Galesburg, IL, a grand-father, Earl A. Plue of Knoxville, IL, four step-sons, Joseph Pacheco, Donald Hickman, Nathan Hickman and William Hickman, all of Galesburg, IL, a daughter, Angela Starr Mahnesmith of Las Vegas, NV, four sisters, Terri L. (and Dennis) Allen of Knoxville, IL, Tina Riggs, Shirley Robertson and Luann Spahr all of Galesburg, IL, two brothers, Douglas R. (and Kyra M.) Mahnesmith of Gilson, IL and Wesley D. (and Melonie) Mahnesmith of Galesburg, IL.
He was employed by Phoenix Industries and Gross Galesburg, both of Galesburg. He was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Thursday July 31, 2003 at East Linwood Cemetery with Rev. Lewis Woods officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the family.

Mr. Robert J. “Tiger” Stomberg, Galesburg Chapel

58, of 714 Mulberry St., Galesburg, IL died at 7:04 PM Sunday, July 27, 2003 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born October 17, 1944 in Knox County, IL to Cecil and Mary Fisher Stomberg.
He is survived by a special friend, Linda Chisholm of Galesburg, IL with whom he made his home, one son, John R. (and Darcy) Stomberg of Kankakee, IL, one daughter, Christine M. Enders of Kankakee IL and three grandchildren.
He worked as a machinist for Butler Manufacturing. He was a member of the Brothers of the Third Wheel in Ava, MD. He graduated from Galesburg High School.
Graveside services will be 9:00 AM Wednesday July 30, 2003 in East Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Tuesday July 29, 2003 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to an Education Fund for his grandchildren.

Mrs. Charlotte E. Adcock, Galesburg Chapel

87, of 1325 Coconino, Ames, IA, died Saturday July 26, 2003 at her home.
She was born on January 22, 1916 in Chicago IL to Frank J. and Julia (Dunlap) Garrett. She married Edmund "Rex" Adcock in Midlothian IL on December 29, 1952. He preceded her in death on November 26, 1996.
Also surviving is a daughter, Charmay Adcock of La Mesa, CA, a son, Edmund Adcock of Gilbert, IA, a brother, John Garrett of Delavan, WI and two grandsons, David Adcock and Richard Adcock.
She was a homemaker living in Chicago Heights and Galesburg IL, Sun City AZ and Ames IA. She was a 1938 graduate of the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. She was a member of TOPS in Galesburg.
Graveside funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday July 30, 2003 at Warren County Hope Cemetery near Alexis IL. Rev. Becky Ingram will officiate. Mr. Virgil O. Batterton, Galesburg Chapel

85, of 989 E. Fremont St. Galesburg, IL, died at 5:02 AM Saturday July 26, 2003 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg, IL.
He was born on September 17, 1917 in Enid IL to Arley Lee and Marvel (Brainard) Batterton. He married Margaret Imogene Kimmel in Ipava IL on November 17, 1945. She survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Carole Batterton of Galesburg, IL and a sister, Evelyn (and Claire) Thomas of Table Grove, IL. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
He was an assembler and supervisor at the former Gale Products/Outboard Marine Corporation for 36 years, retiring in September 1981. He was a member of the First Christian Church where he served as a deacon. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post #2257 and American Legion Post #285. He served in France and Germany during World War II with the US Army field artillery.
Funeral services will be 11:30 AM Tuesday July 29, 2003 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Reverends Greg and Martha-Jean Fitch officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Military honors will be provided by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285. Visitation will be from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday July 28, 2003 at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or First Christian Church.

Mr. David W. Moshier, Abingdon Chapel

49, of RR Abingdon died at 2:45 pm Thursday, July 24, 2003 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital ER.
He was born on October 25, 1953 in Galesburg to Elwood and Marjorie Cannon Moshier.
Surviving are his parents of RR Abingdon, one brother, Daniel (Jodi) Moshier of RR St. Augustine; two sisters, Tina (and Rick) Grohmann of RR Gilson and Terri Brown of Macomb; two nieces and three nephews and one great niece.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
He had lived in the Abingdon area all his life. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1973. He also graduated from Carl Sandburg College.
He retired from the Illinois Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division Galesburg office.
He was a past member of the Knox County Board. He was a former supervisor for Indian Point Township. He had served as chairman of the Knox County Township Officials.
He was a member and past president of the Abingdon Jaycees and the Abingdon Kiwanis Club.
Friends may call from 11:00 am until noon Saturday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon followed by a graveside service at the Abingdon Cemetery with Eleanor Landon officiating.

Mr. Arthur E. Dameron, Galesburg Chapel

98, 1248 Beecher Ave., Galesburg, IL, died at 8:55 PM Thursday, July 24, 2003 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
He was born July 20, 1905 in Jackson County, Arkansas, the son of George T. and Mary Crider Dameron. He married Mildred Hewitt on May 2, 1942 in Perryville, MO. She survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Mary Ellen Dameron, Galesburg and a brother, William Dameron, Humboldt, TN. He was preceded in death by a brother and 2 sisters.
He had taught at a one room rural school during the Great Depression and was the shop teacher at Galesburg High School for 20 years, retiring in 1968. He also served as the executive secretary for the Illinois Sheet Metal Contractor’s Association for 5 years. He graduated from high school in Gilliam, MO and from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Galesburg, where he belonged to the United Methodist Men and served as a trustee, board member, and held other offices within the church. He was also a member of Vesper Masonic Lodge #584 AF&AM, Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285, Illinois Retired Teacher’s Assoc., Knox County Home Workshop Club, Literacy Volunteer Board, Organic Garden Club, Knox County Draft Board, Rent Advisory Board, and the Knox County Farm Bureau.
He served in the United States Navy for 3 years and with the National Guard for 2 years.
Funeral will be 10 AM Tuesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Marilyn Anell will officiate. Visitation will be 9 to 10 AM Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be 11 AM Wednesday in Bethel Cemetery, Tallula, IL. Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Leona R. Parrish, Galesburg Chapel

92, of Galesburg, IL died at 2:40 PM Wednesday (7-23-03) at Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg, IL.
She was born June 6, 1911 in Arbela, MO the daughter of Pete and Jennie Becktol Robinson. She married Cecil W. “Mike” Parrish May 18, 1929 in Memphis, MO. He preceded her in death June 28, 1964.
Surviving is a son, Sam (and Vickie) Parrish, Cameron, IL, 2 daughters, Karen (and Jim) Towers, Aurora, IL and Nancy (and Tom) Staray, Downers Grove, IL; 1 granddaughter, 3 grandsons, 2 great-granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
She was a teacher for a total of 38 years, beginning in one room rural schools in Gorin, Wayconda, and La Plata, MO and Fort Madison, IA. Then she was a first grade teacher for 21 years at the former Nellie Swanson School in Galesburg where she retired in 1976. She graduated form Gorin High School 1929, Gorin, MO. She received her BA degree from Northeast Missouri State Univ. Teachers College in Kirksville, MO. She attended University of Iowa in 1951, and received her master’s degree in education from Western IL Univ. in Macomb, IL in 1961. She continued to take classes for many years. She was a member of First Christian Church in Galesburg, IL and was affiliated with the Gerlaw Christian Church, Gerlaw, IL. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in La Plata, MO, the Illinois Retired Teacher’s Assoc., former member and past president of the Galesburg Education Assoc. and a member of the Teacher’s Union in Galesburg, IL.
Funeral service will be 7:30 PM Friday evening (7-25-03) at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with the Rev. Paul Lydic officiating. Visitation will be 6:00 to 7:30 PM Friday evening at the chapel. Graveside service will be 11:00 AM Saturday (7-26-03) in the Gorin Community Cemetery with Order of Eastern Star Rites conducted. Memorials can be made to the Gerlaw Christian Church.
