Mr. Albert C. Yarde, Galesburg Chapel

86, of 1116 Pinetree Lane, Galesburg, IL died at 3:25 PM Sunday August 31, 2003 in Rosewood Care Center.
He was born November 29, 1916 in Alexis, IL, the son of Bert and Helen Benson Yarde. He married Ruth Johnson on March 8, 1941 in Roseville, IL. She survives.
Also surviving is one son, John (and Beverly) Yarde of Alexis, IL, one daughter, Karen L. (and Cecil) Hall of Corvallis, MT, one sister, Opal Parrish of Daytona Beach, FL, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and one step great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one brother and one grandson, Paul Edward Yarde in 1976.
He worked as a farmer his entire life near Alexis, IL in Warren County retiring in 1985. He graduated from Alexis High School in 1935.
He was a member of the Warren County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Henderson Grove Grange. He was on the Committee for Kelly Township for 20 years.
He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, Galesburg, IL.
Graveside services will be 11 AM Thursday in East Linwood Cemetery with the Rev. Kevin Treptow officiating. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:00 PM Wednesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the Faith United Methodist Church or Community Hospices of America.

Mrs. Geraldine "Jet" Bauer, Abingdon Chapel

82, of 203 W. Latimer St. died at 8:45 am Saturday, August 30, 2003 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
She was born on April 27, 1921 in Abingdon to Larry and Zoe Stegall Billings. She married Pat Bauer on December 17, 1949 at the All Souls Catholic Church in Abingdon. He survives.
Also surviving are two sons, William (and Carolyn) Bauer of Glasford, IL and Gerald (and Bienvenida) Bauer of Luqillo, Puerto Rico; five grandchildren; one sister, Kathleen Emery of Galesburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Margaret Ruth Smith.
She enlisted in the Army in September of 1943 as a WAC. She served overseas in Europe and was in the Battle of Northern France. She received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with Bronze Star, the WAC Service Ribbon, Two Overseas Service Bars, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
She was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon and was a past member of the Legion Auxiliary.
She graduated from Abingdon High School in 1940.
She had worked at the Abingdon Telephone Office, the Galesburg Airport, and the Abingdon Pottery. She wrote the Abingdon News for the Galesburg Register-Mail for many years. She also sold the World Book Encyclopedia for a number of years and Avon Products for 29 years.
She was a china painter and was a past member of the Galesburg Prairie China Painters.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a past youth leader in the church. She was a former Cub Scout leader. She was a member of the first auxiliary police group established by the Abingdon Police Department.
She was active in starting of the Abingdon Community Festival Association and served as chairman of the Arts and Crafts at the festival.
Services will be at 10:00 am Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon with Father Joseph Presley officiating. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery with Military Rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. Friends may call from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Monday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon with a Rosary service at 8:00 pm.
Memorials may be made to American Legion Post #381 or the Abingdon Community Festival Association.

Mr. John W. Bowers, Galesburg Chapel

89, 1384 N. Henderson St., Galesburg, died at 9:05 AM Saturday, August 30, 2003 at home.
He was born July 14, 1914 in Prairie City, IL, the son of Samuel F. and Minnie Van Velsor Bowers. He married Dorothy Templeman on June 1, 1947 in Peoria, IL. She survives.
Also surviving is a son, Donald (and Pam) Bowers, Galesburg and 2 sisters, Elaine Craig, Portland, OR and Esther Steele, Mt. Vernon, WA. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers.
He was an auto body mechanic for 35 years, working for Wright-Allensworth, Jeff Good, Weaver-Yemm, and Bob Weaver Buick, all in Galesburg. He retired in 1998. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1933. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Galesburg. He was a WWII Army veteran. He was a tech sergeant with the 190th Field Artillery, participated in the Normandy Invasion, and was a recipient of the Bronze Star.
Graveside services will be 11 AM Thursday in Prairie City Cemetery, Prairie City, IL. The Rev. Robert Eshleman will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to Harmony Baptist Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Freeda Josephine Anderson, Galesburg Chapel

91 of 919 Locust St., Galesburg, IL died 6:23 PM Saturday August 30, 2003 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born June 6, 1912 in Astoria, IL the daughter of George and Clara Alice Anderson Benton. She married Clarence E. Anderson in Monmouth, IL on January 18, 1932. He preceded her in death on October 17, 1983.
Survivors include one son, Gary R. Anderson of Galesburg, IL, one daughter Donna J. (and Kenneth) Reed of Galesburg, IL, two grandchildren, Kelly and Steven Reed and one great granddaughter, Lilly Reed. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church. She was a past member and leader of the Ladies Circle within the church. She was the past secretary of the Sunday school office and was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
A private family graveside service is scheduled for Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the First Lutheran Church. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. E. Lucille Burton, Galesburg Chapel

age 90 of 213 N. Pleasant Ave. Galesburg, Il. died Friday August 29, 2003 at Cottage Hospital at 2:24 AM.
She was born June 6, 1913 in Lima, Il. the daughter of Leeroy J. and Melinda Jane Ware Dooley. She married Maxwell J. Burton in Quincy, Il. on May 20, 1932.
She is survived by her husband, one son Mr.Gilbert L. (Karen) Burton-Oneida, Il. five daughters Mrs. Wilbert (Connie) McLaren, Bonnie Jean McCone both of Galesburg, Mrs. Jim (Anna Mae) Zeephat-Lynwood, Il., Mrs. Edward (Marilyn Kay) Swanson-Colorado Springs, Co., Mrs. Edward (Betty Lou) Slusher-Media, Il.. 16 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 4 brothers, 2 sisters, and 2 grandchildren.
She was the manager of Claire’s Boutique for 15 years retiring in 1974. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Vesta Rebecca Lodge # 29, and a 50 year member of the Women of the Moose.
Funeral services will be 10 AM Wednesday September 3, 2003 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel . Rev. Daniel Siems will be officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Lola M. Johnson, Galesburg Chapel

83, 43 Knox Highway 37, Galesburg, IL, died at 8:15 AM Friday, August 29, 2003 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
She was born December 24, 1919 in rural Altona, IL, the daughter of Carl and Lizzie Jacobson. She married Willard “Bill” Johnson on September 24, 1949 in Altona, IL. He preceded her in death in 1961.
Surviving are 3 sons, Carl (and LuAnn) Johnson and Ronald Johnson, both of Galesburg, and Gary (and Linda) Johnson, German Valley, IL, a sister, Marjorie (and Harold) Selman, Altona, IL, and 7 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers.
She was a homemaker who graduated from Altona High School. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Henderson Grove, IL, where she sang in the choir, was a Sunday school teacher, and was a member of W.E.L.C.A. She was a member of the Knox County Farm Bureau and was a volunteer driver for New Horizons.
Funeral will be 1 PM Tuesday in Messiah Lutheran Church, Henderson Grove, IL. The Rev. Kurt Carlsen will officiate. Visitation will be 11 AM to 1 PM Tuesday at the church. Mrs. Elaine C. Shafer, Galesburg Chapel

72, formerly of 1441 S. Cherry St., Galesburg died at 10:55 AM Friday, August 29, 2003 in the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, IL.
She was born September 25, 1930 in Red Wing, WI, the daughter of Leo and Christine Gutting Langer. She married Norman P. Shafer on May 26, 1949 in Prescott, WI. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1992.
Surviving are 3 sons, Darold (and Karen) Shafer, Aurora, IL, David (and Sandy) Shafer, Cottage Grove, MN, and Jim (and Lisa) Shafer, Galesburg, 4 daughters, Barbara Kletecka in California, Judy (and Ken) Ziolkowski, Milwaukee, WI, and Debbie (and Rodger) Clay and Diane Ohmann, both of Galesburg, 16 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, a brother, Leo Langer, Elk Mound, WI, and a sister, Marion Place, Red Wing, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Gerald, a brother, and a grandchild.
She was a homemaker who had lived in Aurora, IL for 20 years, in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and in Galesburg for the past 15 years. She graduated from Prescott High School in Prescott, WI in 1947. She was of the Lutheran faith. She was a former member of the Ladies of the Moose in Galesburg.
Cremation will be accorded. Graveside committal of ashes for her and her deceased husband will be 10 AM Thursday in East Linwood Cemetery. The Rev. Joseph Presley will officiate. Mr. Jim Smith, Abingdon Chapel

95, of 104 W. Lower St. died at 9:35 am Thursday, August 28, 2003 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
He was born on December 3, 1907 in Claiborne, TN to Flemiel and Ollie Nelson Smith. He married Lillian Cline in 1924 in Cumberland Gap, TN. He married Phyllis Kennedy in June of 1941 in Palmyra, MO. She survives.
Also surviving are four sons, James E. (and Helen) Smith of Melbourne, FL, Warren (and Beatrice) Smith and Robert (and Betty) Smith both of Tazwell, TN, Donald (and Carol) Smith of Green Valley, AZ; one daughter, Connie (and Raymond) Adolphson of Avon, IL; two sisters, Hazel Mills and Media Young both of Tazwell, TN; 18 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandchild, one great grandchild, three brothers and two sisters.
He had lived in Abingdon since 1939. He was a machinist at the former Gale Products division of OMC in Galesburg for 26 years retiring in February of 1973.
He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Abingdon.
Cremation will be accorded. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27, at 1:30 pm at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon with Eleanor Landon officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the chapel.

92, 280 E. Losey St., Galesburg, died at 12:10 PM Thursday, August 28, 2003 in Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.
She was born July 2, 1911 in Chicago, the daughter of David R. and Elizabeth R. Bainer Seaquist. She married Arthur C. Boegen on February 18, 1933 in Chicago. He preceded her in death on February 7, 1998.
Surviving is a son, David A. (and Shirley) Boegen, Galesburg, a daughter, Arlene M. (and Dale) Christie, Plattsmouth, NE, 5 grandchildren, and 7 great grandsons. She was preceded in death by a sister.
She was a homemaker who had lived in Chicago, Elmhurst, and Galesburg. She attended Carl Schurz High School in Chicago. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Chicago and Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Galesburg.
Funeral will be 1:30 PM Wednesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Daniel Smith will officiate. Visitation will be 12:30 to 1:30 PM Wednesday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials can be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.

She was born April 6, 1919 in Knox County, IL, the daughter of Charles F. and Mary Ellen Welch Foster. She married Lawrence Siener in Peoria, IL. He preceded her in death in 1987.
Surviving is a son, Larry (and Robbin) Siener, Acworth, GA and a brother, Edward Foster, Wheaton, IL. She was preceded in death by one brother and 2 sisters.
She was a homemaker.
