Mr. John Stoneking, Jr., Galesburg Chapel

79, of 258 Westview Dr., Knoxville, IL died at 11:10 PM Wednesday, March 24, 2004 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born May 11, 1924 in Galesburg, IL the son of John Lee and Margaret Jacobs Stoneking, Sr. He married Mary Virginia Bogeart in Galesburg, IL on September 14, 1946. She survives.
Also surviving is one daughter, Carlene (and J.C.) Nashland of Mt. Zion, IL, one sister, Helen Ebbing of Galesburg, IL, three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He served in the US Army during World War II, where he was a POW in Germany. He received the Silver Battle Star, the Bronze Battle Star, the Bronze Service Arrowhead, four overseas services bars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart Medal.
He worked for Victor Casket Hardware Company for 17 years. He then worked for Gates Rubber Company for 24 ½ years, retiring in 1987. He lived in Knoxville for 26 years. He was a 1942 graduate from Galesburg High School. He attended Browns Business College. He was a member of the VFW # 2257. He was an avid bowler, playing for Victor Casket Hardware Team, and was an avid golfer.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Monday, March 29, 2004 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Sunday, March 28, 2004 at the Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Memorials can be made to the Kidney Foundation

Mrs. Barbara June Hallberg, Galesburg Chapel

87, formerly of 691 Bateman St., Galesburg, died at 9:40 AM Friday, March 26, 2004 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born March 16, 1917 in St. Augustine, IL, the daughter of Jonathan Oscar and Rachael May Ray Babbitt. She married Richard C. Hallberg on October 28, 1939 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on September 23, 2000.
She is survived by a sister, Alice Peterson, Galesburg and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers and one sister.
She worked at Butler Manufacturing during WWII and then operated the former Nu Mode Hosiery Shop inside Bunker’s Shoe Store for 10 years. She also sold real estate for many years.
She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1935. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Galesburg. She was a member of the Home Extension–Lombard Unit for 30 years, O.A.K.S. (Older Americans of Knox), the Galesburg Artist Guild, the Tri County Travelers (Good Sam), and a former member of the Pilot Club.
Funeral will be 2 PM Monday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Paul Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be 1 to 2 PM Monday at the chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials can be made to American Diabetes Association or First Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Gertrude Ernstein, Galesburg Chapel

89, of 2712 Springer Rd. Apt. #9, Galesburg, IL died Friday March 26, 2004 at 3:22 PM at Galesburg Terrace.
She was born June 22, 1914 in Chicago, IL the daughter of Morris and Tillie Krauss Goldstein. She married Dr. Lester Ernstein in Chicago, IL on August 29, 1937. He preceded her in death on December 4, 2002.
She is survived by one son, Dr. William A. (and Janet) Ernstein of Wilmette, IL, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Terry H. Clark on August 24, 2003.
She was a graduate of Harrison High School in Chicago, IL. She was the office manager for her husband’s optometric practice for many years. She was a member of Temple Sholom in Galesburg and the National Council of Jewish Women.
Graveside services will be 12:00 PM Monday, March 29, 2004 at Brookside Cemetery Galesburg, IL There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the Lupus Foundation of Illinois.

Mrs. Sue S. Kimbell, Galesburg Chapel

89, 1250 W. Carl Sandburg Dr., Galesburg, IL, died at 5:00 PM Sunday, March 28, 2004 in Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg.
She was born April 19, 1914 in Riverside, OH, the daughter of Harry and Sadie Clark Sturla. She married Raymond G. Kimbell, Jr. on August 22, 1937 in Oak Park, IL. He preceded her in death on February 7, 1987.
She is survived by 2 sons, Raymond G. III (and Agnes) Kimbell, Galesburg, IL and Stephen W. (and Deborah) Kimbell, Tunbridge, VT, 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and a nephew, Craig (and Cindy) Sturla of Winter Park, FL, who cared for her. She was preceded in death by one brother.
She was a social studies teacher at the Jr. and Sr. High levels for 18 years. She retired in 1980. She graduated from Oak Park High School in 1932, from Northwestern University in 1936, and received her master’s degree in 1937.
She had lived in Wheaton, IL for 9 years, in Mesa, AZ for 30 years, and in Galesburg for the past 5 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg and the PEO in Mesa, AZ.
Cremation will be accorded. Memorial services and burial of ashes will be announced at a later date. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Irene Ann Miner, Abingdon Chapel

79 of 608 S. Main St. died at 2:10 pm Monday, March 22, 2004 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
She was born March 24, 1924 in LaGrange, NY to Joseph and Louise Turowski Sokolowski. She married Harris, “Red” Miner on October 14, 1949 in Abingdon. He survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Gene & Bill both of Abingdon, Timothy (and Karen) Miner of Galesburg and Marion (and Sue) Miner of Champaign, IL; four daughters, Janice Miner of Galesburg, Ronna Freed, Christine Miner and Linda (and Raymond) Buckus all of Champaign; 6 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 1 adopted grandchild; two brothers, Leonard (and Helen) Sokolowski and Joseph (and Joyce) Sokolowski both in New York; two sisters, Millie (and Lloyd) Roberts of Salem, Arkansas and Connie (and Gene) Lahey of New York.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Harry & John, two sisters, Josephine and Frances.
She had lived in abingdon the past 60 years. She worked at the former Blue Bell Mfg. and at Knox Laundry in Galesburg. She was a homemaker and was a babysitter for several area families.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Saturday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon. Eleanor Landon and Rev. Melody Andrews will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday at the chapel.

Mr. Jose P. “Joe” De La Cruz, Galesburg Chapel

51, of LeHigh Acres, FL, formerly of Galesburg, IL, died at 8:00 PM Friday, March 19, 2004 in Ft. Meyers, FL.
He was born on September 19, 1952 in Amherst, TX the son of Reynaldo D. and Herminia Perez De La Cruz. He married Alicia Reyes. She survives in Robstown, TX.
Also surviving is his mother Herminia De La Cruz, two sons; Daniel B. Reyes and Micael A. Reyes both of Corpus Christi, TX, two daughters; Deela De La Cruz of Galesburg, IL and Angelica M. Reyes of Corpus Christi, TX, six brothers; Ray P. De La Cruz, Jessie P. De La Cruz, Erasmo P. De La Cruz and Emilio De La Cruz all of Galesburg, IL and Frank P. De La Cruz of Lehigh Acres, FL and Carlos P. De La Cruz from San Diego CA, and one sister, Martina Perez of Monmouth IL. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.
He worked as a field supervisor for De La Cruz Drywall and Stucco Inc. for fifteen years. He graduated from high school in Corpus Christi TX.
Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Friday, March 26, 2004 at East Linwood Cemetery with Rev. Melody Andrews officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, March 25, 2004 at the Chapel. Memorials can be made to the family.

Mrs. Anna M. Stegall, Galesburg Chapel

103, of 800 N. Market St., Knoxville, IL died at10:35 AM Tuesday March 23, 2004 in Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, IL.
She was born March 4, 1901 in Williamsfield, IL the daughter of Moses and Elizabeth Cadwell Jackson. She married Henry T. Kell in Ft. Madison, IA in 1919. He died in 1935. She later married Albert J. Stegall in Oneida, IL in 1953. He died in 1975.
She is survived by one son, William E. Kell of Dahinda, IL, one stepson, James Stegall of Rock Island, IL, one daughter, Ilene M. Buskirk of Galesburg, IL, fourteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, two sons, two daughters, two brothers and one sister.
She was a homemaker living in Galesburg and Williamsfield most her life.
Private family graveside services will be Friday, March 26, 2004 in Linwood Cemetery with Rev. Ron Scarlett officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the Knox County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Margaret E. Erickson, Galesburg Chapel

83, of 1142 Windcrest Acres, Galesburg, IL died 4:36 PM Sunday March 21, 2004 at her home.
She was born December 1, 1920 in Weslaco, TX, the daughter of Cecil and Josephine Bradenburg Spangler. She married Frederick K. Erickson August 25, 1940 in Galesburg, IL. He preceded her in death on December 29, 2002.
Survivors include one son, Lee Erickson of Church Hill, TN, three daughters, Elaine (husband Larry) Karch of Heyworth, IL, Susie Richardson of Galesburg, IL, and Carol Erickson of Galesburg, IL., two sisters, Mary Stephens of Lake Havasu City, AZ and Ginger McClellan of Costa Mesa, CA, fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter, Collette Godsil.
She worked at Admiral during WWII. She later worked as a seamstress for Stern and Fields and Bergner’s. She was a homemaker. She lived in Galesburg most her life. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1938.
She was a member of the former Dandelions. She was a member of the PTA.
She attended First Presbyterian Church and the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 PM Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with the Rev. Birger Draget officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 1 PM Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association or to the Charity of the Donors Choice.

Mrs. Sandra Kay Williams, Abingdon Chapel

60 of RR Colchester and formerly of Abingdon, died at 9:25 am Monday, March 22, 2004 at her home.
She was born on April 3, 1943 in Galesburg to Albert and Ella Jane Welsh Wall. She married Joe Bradshaw. He preceded her in death on September 16, 1994. She later married Robert Williams on June 14, 1997 in Macomb. He survives.
Also surviving are her father, Albert of Abingdon; three daughters, Val Bradshaw of Columbus, GA, Cassandra (and Richard) Johnson of Abingdon and Marga Christie of Galesburg; three sisters, Patricia (and Ernie) Thurman of RR St. Augustine, Connie (and Dale) Durham of Cumming, GA and Dorothy (and Gene) Harmon of Bourbannais, IL; 8 grandchildren, Brandi Pratt, Mark Pratt, Lucinda Abrams, Amber Johnson, Richard Johnson, Nicole Johnson, Mary Christie, Joe Christie; 3 great grandchildren, Mark Anthony (Trey) Pratt III, Henley Carrington Martin and Taylor Gage Pratt; six step children, Rocky Williams, Mark Williams, Tony Williams all of Macomb, Theresa Randall of Littleton, Robert Shawn Williams of Galesburg and James Williams of Colchester; 7 step grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her Mother and one brother, Donovan Tinkham.
She had lived in the Colchester area since 1997, prior to that she lived in Abingdon for several years where she worked at the Abingdon Nursing Home and the former Abingdon Industries.
She was a member of the former First General Baptist Church in Abingdon and attended the St. Paul Catholic Church in Macomb.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm Thursday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon. Monsignor Richard Pricco and Mrs. Andie Pickard will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul Catholic Cemetery in Macomb. Friends may call fro 7:00 – 9:00 pm Wednesday at the chapel.

Miss Ruth L. Medhurst, Abingdon Chapel

91, a resident of the Care Center of Abingdon, died at 11:10 pm Monday, March 22, 2004 at the Care Center.
She was born on January 4, 1913 in Windfield, Iowa to Ward and Jessie Medhurst.
Surviving are a brother, Merle (and Eunice) Medhurst of Lexington, SC and a caregiver, Joanne (and Ron) Batson of Abingdon and cousins.
She had lived in Abingdon most of her life. She was an artist.
Graveside service will be at 10 am Thursday at the Silent Home Cemetery near Cameron. Eleanor Landon will officiate. There will be no visitation.
