Mr. Richard E. Standard, Galesburg Chapel

87, Cottonwood, AZ, formerly of Galesburg, died Friday, May 14, 2004 in Verdi Valley Medical Center, Cottonwood, AZ.
He was born September 13, 1916 in Arbela, MO, the son of Millard E. and Elizabeth Hummel Standard. He married Frances Root in 1942. He later married Beth “Betty” Weir McCaw on December 28, 1988 in AZ. She survives.
Also surviving are 2 sons, Neal (and Pam) Standard, Golden, CO and Dale Standard, Milan, IL, a daughter, Bonnie (and Roger) Boostrom, Rock Island, IL, 2 sisters, Betty Hargrove, Thayer, MO and Martha Aery, Burlington, Iowa, 6 grandchildren, one great grandchild, 3 nieces, and 5 nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother.
He farmed for many years before retiring in 1983. He graduated from Milton (IA) High School in 1934. He served in the United States Army during WWII. He had lived in Galesburg and Cottonwood.
Cremation was accorded. Graveside memorial services will be 11 AM Saturday, May 29, 2004 in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg. The Rev. Stephan Bibb will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. William H. Henning, Galesburg Chapel

79, 2314 N. Broad St., Galesburg, died at 8:05 AM Wednesday, May 26, 2004 in Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.
He was born August 8, 1924 in Kansas City, MO, the son of Eldridge H. and Marie Harriman Henning. He married Jean C. Swanson on October 30, 1943 in Boston, MA. She survives.
Also surviving are 3 daughters, Connie (and Larry) Hund, Charlottesville, VA, Joan (and Tony) Pinckney, Sycamore, IL, and Laura (and Brent) King, Oak Run, Dahinda, IL, 6 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother.
He was an attorney and partner in the former firm of Peel, Henning, Mathers, and McKee from 1949 until retiring in 1986. He also served as Assistant State’s Attorney from 1954 to 1956 and as Public Defender from 1957 to 1965.
He graduated from Lake Forest Academy in 1942, Brown University in Providence, RI with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1945 and from the University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor, MI in 1948.
He had lived in Galesburg since 1951. He was a member of the American, Illinois, and Knox County Bar Associations. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a former board member, Alpha Masonic Lodge #155, and Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285, all in Galesburg. He served as the chairman of the Galesburg Polio Drive the year the vaccine became available.
He served in the United States Navy and was commissioned as an ensign in 1945. He served in the United States Naval Reserves, retiring in 1984 with the rank of Lt. Commander.
Funeral will be 10 AM Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Scott Grulke will officiate. Visitation will be 6 to 8 PM Friday at the chapel. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, Monmouth, IL, with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Memorials can be made to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Association or American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Viola A. “Toots” West, Galesburg Chapel

88, 470 E. Third St., Galesburg, died at 2:23 PM Tuesday, May 25, 2004 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
She was born June 24, 1915 in Dahinda, IL, the daughter of Walter E. Sr. and Blanche Brooks Smith. She married Charles F. West on October 29, 1966 in Galesburg. He survives.
Also surviving is a sister, Iva Jean Maher, Galesburg and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers and one sister.
She was an assembler at the former Gale Products Division of Outboard Marine Corporation in Galesburg for 10 years. She was then an inspector and assembler at the former Admiral Corporation in Galesburg for 10 years. She retired in 1971.
She had lived in Galesburg most of her life and attended Galesburg schools. She was a life member of the former Eagles Lodge Auxiliary.
Graveside services will be 10 AM Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Deacon Robert W. Myers will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Neva Lou Asmussen, Galesburg Chapel

65, 1551 Edgebrook Dr., Galesburg, died at 5:57 PM Tuesday, May 25, 2004 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born October 2, 1938 in Dexter, MO the daughter of Marie Harris. She married Roderick E. Van Winkle in Kansas City, MO. She then married Harold D. Asmussen on November 6, 1982. He survives.
Also surviving are a son, Rodney (and Stephanie) Van Winkle, Sommerville, TN, 2 daughters, Vicki Lynn (and Myron) Miller, Galesburg and Susan Dianne (and Mark) Taylor, McCook, Neb., a step son, Joe Asmussen, Canton, IL, and 7 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and a daughter, Ruthann Van Winkle.
She graduated from Chillicothe, MO High School in 1956. She graduated from Kansas City Fine Arts Academy in 1959.
She worked at Marigold Health Care Center and Knox Laundry, both in Galesburg. She was also a homemaker.
She was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church, Galesburg.
Graveside services will be 10 AM Friday in Warren County Hope Cemetery, near Alexis, IL. The Rev. Rodney Miller will officiate. Visitation will be 9 to 10 AM Friday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to Faith Bible Fellowship Church.

Mr. Robert F. “Boots” Glas, Galesburg Chapel

85, Illinois Veteran’s Home, Quincy, IL, formerly of Galesburg, IL, died at 4:35 PM Sunday, May 23, 2004 in Blessing Hospital, Quincy, IL.
He was born December 24, 1918 in Galesburg the son of Tony and Regina Ores Glas. He married Audrey L. Thomas on October 17, 1936 in Davenport, Iowa. She preceded him in death on July 24, 1991.
He is survived by 2 sons, Jerry (and Lea) Glas, Edwards, IL and Robert D. Glas, New Orleans, LA, 4 grandchildren, Bret Glas, East Peoria, IL, Kelly Glas, Peoria, IL, Matthew Glas, Edwards, IL, and Alisa Glas, Reno, NV, and one great granddaughter, Grace Glas, East Peoria, IL. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers.
He was an ironworker at Butler Manufacturing Company in Galesburg. He also owned and operated Glas Realty with his wife and raised horses. He was a WWII United States Navy veteran.
Graveside services will be 10 AM Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the Illinois Veteran’s Home, Quincy, IL. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Richard W. “Jim” LaGrow, Galesburg Chapel

86, 742 Lawrence Ave., Galesburg, died at 11:11 PM Tuesday, May 18, 2004 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, IL.
He was born June 24, 1917 in Warren County, near Monmouth, IL, the son of Clarence A. and Emma McKinnon LaGrow. He married Elizabeth Irene “Sally” Stodd on June 7, 1950 in Normal, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are a brother, Forrest LaGrow, Phoenix, AZ and a sister, Helen Schlosser in Minnesota. He was preceded in death by 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
He worked for Burlington Northern Truck Lines in Galesburg for several years before retiring. He had lived in Galesburg for several years. He was a WWII United States Army veteran.

Mr. George E. McGee, Galesburg Chapel

61, Rapid City, South Dakota, formerly of Galesburg died at 4:50 AM Saturday, May 22, 2004 at the home of his daughter, Robin at 121 W. Simmons St., Galesburg.
He was born May 4, 1943 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Edward and Jenny Virginia Gilmore McGee. He married Sheila Melvin, Sherry Kelso, and Carol A. Manning. They all preceded him in death.
He is survived by a son, Mick (and Becky) McGee, Mills, Nebraska, 4 daughters, Robin McGee and Rhonda Novorosky, both of Galesburg, Donna (and Cary) Andrews, Huntertown, IN, and Tina (and Jeff) Bunn, Palm Harbor, FL, one sister, Mary (and Roger) Helms, Galesburg, 10 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother.
He worked for the City of Galesburg in the street department for 13 years. He then worked at the International Harvester factory in Moline. After moving to Rapid City, SD, he owned and operated McGee Janitorial Services for 30 years. He attended ROVA schools in Oneida, IL. He lived in Galesburg for 15 years and then in Rapid City, SD for many years. He served in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1963.
Private family services will be Tuesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. There will be no visitation. Cremation will be accorded and private family burial of ashes will be later in Rapid City, SD. Memorials can be made to the family.

Mr. Robert L. Garman, Galesburg Chapel

83, 9316 Lait Dr., El Paso, TX, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 in Del Sol Hospital East, El Paso, TX.
He was born January 27, 1921 in Waverly, IL the son of Ross and Helen Ashbaugh Garman. He married Louise Pine on August 8, 1942 in Palmyra, MO. She survives.
Also surviving are 2 daughters, Diane (and Phillip) Gragg, El Paso, TX and Karen (and Michael) Measels, Huntsville, Alabama, 4 brothers, Wallace (and Blanche) Garman, Dunlap, IL, Maurice (and Kaye) Garman, Campbell, OH, Dale (and Dot) Garman and Larry Garman, both of Galesburg, 2 sisters, Doris Luallen and Florence (and Luke) Johnson, both of Galesburg, 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister.
He was inducted into the United States Army from Galesburg on March 5, 1941. He served for 21 years and retired with the rank of Captain on November 30, 1962. He then worked in engineering for the Texas Department of Public Highways and Transportation for 18 years, retiring in 1980. He later worked for the Williams Air Force Golf Club in Mesa, AZ.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1941 and attended the University of Texas in El Paso. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in El Paso, TX and its Friendship Sunday School Class. He was a member of the El Maida Shrine and its golf unit, Masonic Lodge #1111, and the Scottish Rite, all in El Paso, TX. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285, Galesburg.
Funeral will be 12 Noon Monday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Kevin Treptow will officiate. Visitation will be 2 to 4 PM Sunday at the chapel with Masonic Rites at 4 PM by Alpha Masonic Lodge #155. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, where Military Rites will be accorded by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Memorials can be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, El Paso, TX.

Mr. John Michael Metelka, Galesburg Chapel

51, of Las Vegas, NV formerly of Galesburg, died at 11:18 AM Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at the Valley Medical Center, Las Vegas, NV.
He was born on October 10, 1952 in Galesburg, IL to John A. and Alberta R. Overton Metelka.
Surviving is a daughter; Christine Metelka of Elmwood Park, IL and a sister; Toni (Roger) Martens of Cape Coral, FL.
He was a self employed musician.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday, May 22, 2004 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Chapel. Burial will be in the East Midway Cemetery, London Mills, IL.

Mr. Donald H. Hall, Galesburg Chapel

63, 698 Eiker Dr., Knoxville, IL, died at 1:23 AM Wednesday, May 19, 2004 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born July 31, 1940 in Knoxville, IL, the son of Howard F. and Louise L. Fox Hall. He married Barbara A. Waight on July 28, 1963 in Alexis, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are 3 sons, Darin Hall and Brent (and Stephanie) Hall, both of Galesburg and Brian (and Heidi) Hall, Delong, IL, 2 grandchildren, Mya Hall and Austin Hall, both of Galesburg, 2 step grandchildren, Kalleigh and Kassidy, both of Delong, IL, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He worked winters for the Illinois Department of Transportation and summers with Greenleaf Landscaping and Mowing in Galesburg. He also farmed with Barry Brown in Knox County. He had lived most of his life in Knoxville, but his high school years in Alexis, where he graduated from Alexis High School in 1958. He attended Western Illinois University.
He was a member of the Knoxville United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Optimist Club.
Funeral will be 10 AM Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Mary Vick Roth will officiate. Visitation will be 6 to 8 PM Friday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials can be made to his grandchildren in care of First Bank.
