Mr. Ned Witherbee, Galesburg Chapel

78, Lakeland, FL, formerly of Galesburg, died Thursday, June 24, 2004 in Lakeland Regional Hospital, Lakeland, FL.
He was born April 12, 1926 in Beardstown, IL, the son of William L. Sr. and Ethel Geano Stillwell Witherbee. He married Marian E. Way on December 5, 1944 in Denver, CO. She survives.
Also surviving are 2 sons, Charles (and Irene) Witherbee, Galesburg and Dr. Jewel Ned (and Peggy) Witherbee, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, a sister, Bernice Switzer, Galesburg, 5 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, and one sister.
He worked in construction through the Peoria Local 649 Union for 36 years. He and his wife also owned and operated the former Green Diamond Tavern in Knoxville for 8 years.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1944 and lived most of his life here. He had lived in Lakeland, FL for the past 15 years. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285, 40 & 8 #215, and Alpha Masonic Lodge #155, all in Galesburg. He was also a member of the Valley of Moline Consistory and the Mohammed Shrine. He was a member of the Waverly Historical Society, Waverly, IL and the PCUG Computer Club and the Mall Walkers, both in Lakeland, FL.
He was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran.
Graveside services will be 10 AM Wednesday, June 30, 2004 in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Joe Patterson will officiate. Military Rites will be accorded by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Visitation will be 9 to 10 AM Wednesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Mrs. Barbara M. Stackhouse, Galesburg Chapel

90, 1355 Shannon Dr., Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Galesburg, died at 11:15 PM Tuesday, June 22, 2004 in the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, IA.
She was born June 7, 1914 in Gramarcy, LA, the daughter of David G. and Barbara Brown Jackson. Her mother died during child birth along with her twin sister, Selena. She was raised by her father and aunt/mother, Selena J. Brown Jackson. She married Robert E. Stackhouse on December 18, 1938 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on December 28, 1993.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, David E. Stackhouse on November 2, 1995, and a daughter-in-law, Olive Davis Stackhouse in May of 1999.
She is survived by a son, Dale R. (and Roberta) Stackhouse, Coralville, Iowa, 5 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
She moved to Galesburg in 1928 and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1933. She moved to Iowa City in February 2004.
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Galesburg. She was a life member of the Galesburg Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #235 and served as matron in 1968. She was a member of AARP and REACT. She had been a volunteer for the American Red Cross.
Funeral will be 11:30 AM Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. W.J. Barnds will officiate. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials can be made to Grace Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Betty Catherine Fey, Abingdon Chapel

79, Abingdon, died at 11:50 p.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at her home.
She was born July 24, 1924, in Peoria. She was reared by Bert and Myrtle Dawdy. She married Richard B. Fey July 18, 1942, in Palmyra, Mo. He preceded her in death Dec. 7, 2003.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn (Richard) Tucker, Rushville, Jane (Jim) Lee, Abingdon; one daughter-in-law, Linda Fey (Harold) Smith, Abingdon; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Sidney Fey, Sr. and one brother, William Dawdy, with whom she was reared.
She had lived in Abingdon most of her life and attended Abingdon High School.
She was a member of the Abingdon High School Half Century Club, the War Wives and was a charter member of Abingdon Junior Women’s Club.
She was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at the Abingdon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Dinges officiating.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Relay for Life Angel Team, Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mr. Malcolm L. “Mac” O’Dean, Galesburg Chapel

89, 811 Knox Road 1850N, Galesburg, died at 11:05 PM Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at home.
He was born October 11, 1914 in Rockwell, Iowa, the son of Henry F. and Josephine Lindstrom O’Dean. He married Betty L. Myers on August 12, 1940 in Davenport, Iowa. She survives.
Also surviving are a son, Malcolm “Sandy” (and Debbie) O’Dean, Naples, FL, a daughter, Mary Jo (and Jerry) Nelson, Galesburg, 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and 3 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, one sister, and one granddaughter.
He farmed his entire life in the Galesburg and Maquon areas. He also was a production worker at the former Gale Products Division of Outboard Marine Corporation in Galesburg for 17 years, before retiring.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Galesburg and the Knox County Farm Bureau.
Funeral will be 10 AM Friday in Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Johnson officiating. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 PM Thursday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials can be made to Bethel Baptist Church.

Mr. Todd Stephen Josefson

25, rural Galesburg, died at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Knox Road 850 N. one-half mile east of Illinois Rt. 41.
He was born Aug. 26, 1978, in Galesburg the son of Steve and Carol (Boyd) Josefson.
He is survived by his parents, of rural Galesburg; two brothers, Jason (Jona) Josefson, Springfield, and Chad (Stacy) Josefson, rural Galesburg; his grandfather, Howard Boyd, rural Galesburg; aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Shelly Peacock, and his maternal grandmother and paternal grandparents.
He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1996 where he participated in baseball and football and was named the most valuable player on the football team.
He graduated magna cum laude at Illinois State University in 2000 and graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 2003.
He was an attorney with the law firm of Stoerzbach, Morrison, Robertson, Wilcox & Alcorn in Galesburg.
He was a member of the Illinois Association of Lawyers and was a past member of the Bracken Busy Bees 4-H Club.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 24, 2004, at the Abingdon Christian Church with Eleanor Landon officiating.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Abingdon Banty League or the Abingdon Christian Church.

Mrs. Virginia N. Burdick, Galesburg Chapel

86, 285 N. Chambers St., Galesburg, died at 9:24 PM Monday, June 21, 2004 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born June 10, 1918 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, the daughter of Opha K. and Gertrude Bush Norman. She married H. Laurence Burdick on June 29, 1943 in Milton, WI. He preceded her in death on May 24, 1998.
She is survived by 2 sons, Dr. Norman R. (and Faith) Burdick, Galesburg and Rev. Kenneth B. (and Ruth) Burdick, Auburn, WA, a daughter, Linda (and Rev. Gordon) Lawton, Milton, WI, and 9 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister.
She was a state and regional officer for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs for many years in Wisconsin. She graduated from Parkersburg High School, Parkersburg, WV and Salem College, Salem, WV. She was a member of the Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church in Milton, WI and several of its church groups. She had served many capacities on the school board in Milton, WI, including treasurer. She had lived most of her life in Milton, WI and had lived in Galesburg since 2001.
Cremation will be accorded. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Milton, WI. Memorials can be made to the Knox-Galesburg Symphony. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Marie L. Duane, Galesburg Chapel

82, 121 W. Simmons St., Galesburg, IL, died at 3:45 AM Monday June 21, 2004 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, IL.
She was born August 20, 1921 in Abingdon, IL, the daughter of Earl C. and M. Louise De Voe Stephens. She married John D. Duane July 13, 1945 in Detroit, MI.
She is survived by a son, David E. Sr. (and Bonnie) Duane, Knoxville, IL, a daughter, Jeanine (and Steve) Bryant, Galesburg, IL, a sister-in-law, Margaret Stephens, Peoria, IL, 3 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 4 step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and 2 grandsons.
She was a bookkeeper for Roger’s Brothers in Galesburg for 21 years, retiring in 1985. She was reared and educated in Abingdon, IL, graduating from Abingdon High School in 1939. She attended Brown’s Business College in Galesburg.
Graveside services will be 10 AM Wednesday in East Linwood Cemetery. Mr. Dave Scholl will officiate. Visitation will be 6 to 7 PM Tuesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the Galesburg Rescue Mission or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mr. Merrill L. Slagel, Abingdon Chapel

St. died at 8:47 pm Saturday, June 19, 2004 at
OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.
He was born October 23, 1917 near Hermon in
Knox County, to Walter and Gertrude Nelson Slagel.
He married Mary E. Kindle on January 29, 1951 in
Burlington, Iowa. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Ralph (and Deena)
Slagel of Abingdon, Terry (and Judith) Slagel of Rural
Galesburg; two daughters, Darlene (and Larry) Snyder of
Monmouth and Sherri (and Mark) Forshee of Abingdon;
10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; one brother,
Carter (and Florence) Slagel of Plane Field, IL; two sisters,
Lelah Skinner of Abingdon and Jean Smith of Knoxville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son,
Clark Stoddard, one daughter, Carol Slagel and
two sisters.
He had lived in the Abingdon and London Mills areas
most of his life.
He worked at the Admiral Company in Galesburg
for 28 ½ years retiring in 1984. He also worked for several
area farmers.
He was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church.
He was a US Army veteran of WW II and was stationed
in Italy and Germany.
He was a member of several area antique tractor and car clubs
including charter memberships in the Argyle Lake Antique
Association and the River Valley Antique Association.
Funeral service will be 10 am Wednesday at the Hinchliff-
Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon. Rev. Raymond McLaren
will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery with Military Rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381.
Friends may call from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Tuesday at the chapel.

Miss Ruth Alice Billings, Galesburg Chapel

96, 280 E. Losey St., Galesburg, died at 10:10 AM Friday, June 18, 2004 in Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.
She was born November 5, 1907 in Galesburg, the daughter of Charles E. and Amy Dahleen Billings.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
She was a telephone operator for the former Intra State Telephone Company in Galesburg for 45 years. She retired in 1972. She had lived in Galesburg her entire life. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1924. She attended the former Lombard College in Galesburg for 2 years.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Galesburg and its altar guild.
Graveside services will be 10 AM Tuesday in Linwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fred Schubach, Galesburg Chapel

age 83 of 5333 West Flagstone Dr., Peoria, IL, formerly of Galesburg, IL, died Saturday June 19, 2004 at 1:00 PM at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria, IL.
He was born August 20, 1920 in Dauborn, Germany to Salomon and Dena Simon Schubach. He married Louise Michelson December 24, 1941 in Peoria, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are 1 son, Michael (and Pam) Schubach, Peoria, IL, 2 daughters, Ellen Schubach (and Vincent Walcek), Southlake, TX and Terry Schubach (and Larry Gelb) of Brookline, MA and 4 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters.
He was the owner of Fred Schubach Clothing in Galesburg, IL, Peoria, IL and Davenport, IA for 55 years and retired in 1992.
He graduated from high school in Germany in 1938. Following high school he became Master Tailor in Dauborn, Germany. He then moved to Galesburg, IL in 1939. In 1974 he received the “Distinguished Service Award” of the Cosmopolitan Club. He was past president of Knox-Galesburg Symphony, Gale Society of Knox College, Community Arts Council and B’Nai B’rith. He was a member of the Downtown Development Community and a former board member of the Knox County Y.M.C.A. and the United Jewish Appeal. He received the “Distinguished Service Award” from Hebrew Union College.
He was a member of Temple Sholom in Galesburg, IL where he was Board Member Emeritus and the past president.
He was a WWII Army veteran serving in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a Bronze Star recipient.
Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Tuesday in Temple Sholom, Galesburg, IL with Penny Gold officiating. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:00 PM Monday evening at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Galesburg, IL with military rites by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post # 285. Memorials can be made to the Temple Sholom, Knox College, YWCA of Peoria, or American Cancer Society.
