Mr. Edwin L. "Cub" Harding, Galesburg Chapel

82, 1160 W. Fremont St., Galesburg, died at 3:49 PM Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at home.

He was born August 9, 1921 in Galesburg, the son of William O. and Dora I. Douglas Harding. He married Stella Crouch in 1941. He later married Evilo L. Wingo Rollins on September 1, 1951 in Knoxville, IL. She preceded him in death on March 27, 1997.

He is survived by a son, Clarence “Bo” Harding, Laguna Hills, CA, a daughter, Marjorie G. (husband Pete) Calderone, Galesburg, 2 step daughters, Maxine M. (husband Larry) Hendricks, Galesburg and Joan M. (husband Chuck) Allen, Knoxville, IL, 14 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers, 5 sisters, 2 step sons, a grandson, and a great granddaughter.

He worked for the former Gale Products Division of Outboard Marine Corporation for 27 years. He retired in 1983. He later worked as a driver and salesman for several area soft drink dealers for 11 years

He was an avid golfer and played for the Gale Golf League. He was also a baseball fan, seeing 14 big league baseball parks across the United States and he saw 2 no hit games, Kenny Holtzmann over the Atlanta Braves at Wrigley Field and Bob Gibson over the Pirates in Pittsburgh. He was a fan of the Big Band Era, his favorite band being the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

He was a 1939 graduate of Galesburg High School.

Funeral will be 11 AM Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Deacon Jim Haneghan will officiate. Visitation will be 10:00-11:00 AM at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to the Hemo-Dialysis Unit at Cottage Hospital.

Mr. Earl E. Ortery, Abingdon Chapel

88, of 404 S. Main St. died at 4:45 am Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born on December 15, 1915 in Monmouth to George and Gladys Ishmael Ortery. He married Billie W. Chenault on August 20, 1937 in New London, Missouri. They enjoyed their lives together for 52 years. She preceded him in death on October 12, 1989.
Surviving are four sisters, Hazel Sheckles of Seaton, IL; Bertha (and Albert) Finch of Keithsburg; Edith Turnquist of Yucca Valley, CA and Bettie Johanson of Moline.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Freddie and Leonard and one infant sister, Alice.
He had lived in Abingdon since 1941. He worked at the former American Sanitary Manufacturing Company (Brass Factory) in Abingdon for 29 ½ years and later at the Abingdon Pottery for 3 years, retiring in 1977.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He enjoyed sitting by the Mississippi River.
Graveside service will be at 1:00 pm Saturday at the Greenmound Cemetery in Keithsburg. Rev. Charles Reynolds will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lilly M. Howard, Galesburg Chapel

85, formerly of 442 E. Third St., Galesburg, IL, died Saturday July 24, 2004 at 7:45 AM in the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, IL.
She was born May 22, 1919 in Galesburg, IL, the daughter of Cecil D. and Leona L. Parks Lamb. She married Clarence J. Howard in Galesburg, IL on February 28, 1939. He preceded her in death on January 12, 1975.
She is survived by several cousins.
She graduated from Galesburg High School. She was a homemaker.
Memorial graveside services will be 10 AM Friday July 30, 2004 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg, IL. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Salvation Army. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Howard Conrad Swartz, Galesburg Chapel

95, 1503 Williams St., Galesburg, IL died at 2:25 AM Tuesday July 27, 2004 at 789 N. West St., Galesburg, IL.
He was born September 18, 1908 of Gladbrook, IA, the son of William Alexander and Mary Alice Sissel Swartz. He was raised by his mother and step father, William Davis. He married Edith Pauline Lane on March 16, 1941 in Macomb, IL. She preceded him in death on February 8, 1980.
He is survived by a son-in-law, Joe Frisby, Galesburg, IL, two grandsons, Richard H. Frisby and David L. Frisby, and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marlyn Jean Frisby July 22, 2001 and a half sister.
He first worked for 14 years for the Gamble Store in the Galesburg, Canton, and Macomb areas. He worked for Macomb Communications two-way radio service for 24 years as a manager for the Canton, Galesburg and Macomb offices, retiring on December 31, 1958. He graduated from Hurland (MO) High School in 1927. He graduated from LaGrange Junior College Academy and then Carthage College in 1931.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:30 to 1:30 PM Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the family.

Mrs. Mary H. Crump, Galesburg

85, of 800 N. Market St., Knoxville, IL (formerly of 433 Phillips St. Galesburg, IL) died at 12:35 AM Saturday (7-24-04) at Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, IL.
She was born October 23, 1918 in Pittsburgh, PA to William and Janette Castor Hurst. She married Hubert C. Crump September 11, 1949 in Galesburg, IL. He preceded her in death October 31, 1993.
She is survived by 1 son – David E. (his wife Gaila) Crump of Wataga, IL; 2 daughters – Claudia Cochran of Okalahoma City, OK, and Mary B. Sweeney of Highwood, IL; and 5 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
She was a substitute teacher in District 205 for 20 years and retired in 1985. She is an active member and a Sunday school teacher of Hope Wesleyan Church in Galesburg, IL. She was a 4-H leader for 10 years in Galesburg, IL. She is a Galesburg High graduate. She received her BA degree from Knox College in Galesburg, IL and her Masters degree from University of Illinois in Champaign, IL.
Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Thursday (7-29-04) at Hope Wesleyan Church in Galesburg with the Rev. Brian Sexton officiating. Mrs. Cecile Elizabeth Hawkins, Galesburg Chapel

94, formerly of 1366 Rona Dr., Galesburg, IL died 12:50 PM Tuesday July 20, 2004 in Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville, IL.
She was born January 5, 1910 in Knoxville, IL the daughter of Harry E. and Edna May Woolsey Mahon. She married Glenn Ray Hawkins on June 23, 1929 in Knoxville, IL. He preceded her in death on March 12, 2001.
She is survived by one son, Eugene Dale (and Barbara) Hawkins of Galesburg, IL, one daughter, Eleanor Gaile (and Max) Gillette of Galesburg, IL, 6 grandchildren, 1 step grandchild, 11 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Galesburg, where she served as a deaconess.
Funeral will be 11:30 AM Saturday July 24, 2004 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with the Rev. Martha-Jean Fitch officiating. Visitation will be 6:30 to 7:30 PM Friday evening at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials can be made to the First Christian Church.

Mrs. Julia A. Griffitts, Galesburg Chapel,

79, of 19 E. Tompkins St., Galesburg, IL, formerly of Prairie City, IL, died 4:00 PM Wednesday March 12, 2003 in the Avon (IL) Nursing Home.
She was born October 23, 1923 in Moreland, KY to John and Julia A. (Southerland) Rice. She married Gillis V. Griffitts in Danville, KY on May 31, 1949. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1987.
She is survived by two sons, Danny D. (and Sue) Griffitts of Galesburg, IL and G. David (and Deborah) Griffitts of Prairie City, IL, seven brothers Samuel Rice of Middletown, KY, John Thomas Rice of Junction City, KY, Charles Rice of Corinth, KY, Duane Rice of Liberty, KY, Paul Rice of Houstonville, KY, Billy Rice of Stanford, KY and Kelly Rice of Danville, KY, a sister, Alice (and James) Crow of Bloomington, IL, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers and three sisters.
She worked as an inspector and wrapper for the Hammer Factory in Bushnell IL for 12 years, retiring in 1972.
She was of the Baptist Faith.
Her body was donated to science. Cremation was accorded. Memorial services will be 10 AM Saturday, July 24, 2004 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Leigh Nygard will officiate. Burial of ashes will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Mr. Garry Harold Hutson, Abingdon Chapel

40 of 385 Indiana Ave., Galesburg and formerly of Abingdon died at 8:30 am Saturday, July 17, 2004 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born on March 5, 1964 in Abingdon to George H. and Peggy A. Miles Hutson.
Surviving are his parents of Berwick; three sisters, Beth (and Paul) Maier of Bloomington, Janice (and John) DuMont of Snellville, GA and Nancy Hutson of Madison, WI; his grandmother, LaVeda Miles of Alpha; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather.
He had lived in the Abingdon and Galesburg areas all his life. He graduated from Abingdon High School and later from Bradley University in 1987 with a bachelor degree.
He attended the Abingdon United Methodist Church and later attended the Central Congregational Church in Galesburg.
He worked in housekeeping at Galesburg Cottage Hospital for two years and later worked at Maytag for seven years.
He was an avid bicyclist and runner.
He was an organ donor.
Cremation will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, July 23, 2004 at the Central Congregational Church in Galesburg. Rev. Linda Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Bridgeway Community Support Program or Central Congregational Church.

Mr. William A. Erwin, Galesburg Chapel

62, Valparaiso, IN, formerly of Itasca and Galesburg, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004 in VNA Horton Hospice Center, Valparaiso, IN.
He was born June 12, 1942 in Galesburg, IL the son of Earle and Lois Stoke Peacock. They preceded him in death and he was later adopted and raised by Wayne and Marion Turney Erwin. His adoptive father preceded him in death. He married Kay Melton on September 24, 1961 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving are his adoptive mother, Marion Erwin, Galesburg, 2 sons, William David Erwin and Jon Michael Erwin (and fiancée Jean Wittkowski), both of Chicago, 3 brothers, Dale M. (and Chris) Peacock, Bolivia, NC, John R. (and Sandy) Erwin, Buffalo Grove, IL, and Edward R. (and Marcella) Peacock, Chicago, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was also preceded in death by one brother, James A. Peacock.
He was a sales manager for Heat Wagon in Valparaiso, IN for several years, retiring June 25, 2004. He had lived in Valparaiso since 1995. He was a 1960 graduate of Galesburg High School.
Funeral will be 2 PM Friday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be 1 to 2 PM Friday at the chapel. Miss Doris Darlene Marshall, Galesburg Chapel

76, formerly of 1384 N. Henderson St., Galesburg, IL died at 4:50 AM Tuesday July 20, 2004 in the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, IL.
She was born June 5, 1928 in West Burlington, IA, the daughter of William Jennings and Maude Lillian Adams Marshall.
She is survived by 1 brother, James W. (and Thelma) Marshall, Sr. of Wataga, IL, 1 sister, Maude Ebert of Galesburg, IL and several Nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother, Carl Robert Marshall and 1 sister Anna Crowner.
She worked at Soangetaha Country Club Galesburg, IL for 10 years, Elks Lodge in Galesburg, IL for 2 years and then she owned and operated the Green Acres Restaurant in Wataga, IL. She graduated from Burlington High School, Burlington, IA in 1945. She was a member of Methodist Episcopal Church in West Burlington, IA and attended the Salvation Army services in Galesburg, IL.
Funeral will be 10 AM Friday July 23, 2004 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with the Rev. Milton Marquith officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:00 AM Friday at the chapel.
