Mrs. Marion Charles Van Norman, Galesburg Chapel

98, 637 Knollcrest Dr. Galesburg, IL died 3:54 PM Wednesday August 25, 2004 in Seminary Manor.
She was born January 30, 1906 in Dekalb IL the daughter of Fred and Elsie Vienna Davis Charles. She married Clarendon Ess Van Norman on August 18, 1928 in Nashua IA. He died October 1, 1991.
Survivors include one son Dr. Clarendon E. (wife Linda) Van Norman of Neversink NY and one daughter Marilyn J. Van Norman of Galesburg IL, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter Marion Joanne Van Norman, and one brother.
She was an organist at the First Lutheran Church for 39 years. She also was the organist for Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and First Baptist Church. She graduated from Dekalb High School in 1924 and Knox College Conservatory 1927. She received her Bachelor of Music in 1928 from Knox College. She gave private piano lessons for 60 years.
She was a member and past president of the Galesburg Study Club. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota. She was an associate of the American Guild of Organist. She was a member and former president of the Galesburg Chapter of American Guild of Organists. She was a member of the Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota. She was a member of the Pi Kappa Lambda. She was a member of the American Association of University Women. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, August 28, 2004 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Frederick Larner officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, August 27, 2004 at the Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Paul Harris Fellowship of Rotary Club or to the Knox College Library.

Mrs. Fern L. Dagen Blair, Galesburg Chapel

88, of 800 N. Market St. Knoxville IL died 6:50 PM Monday August 23, 2004 in Knox County Nursing Home.
She was born June 27, 1916 in East Galesburg IL the daughter of Clarence and Nora Simmons Leadbetter. She married Gilbert R. Dagen on June 27, 1934 in Knoxville IL. He preceded her in death on May 29, 1983. She later married Bob Blair in Galesburg (divorced).
She is survived by two sons Michael (wife Cheryl) Dagen of East Galesburg IL and Walter (wife Joann) Dagen of Galesburg IL, two daughters Kay (husband Donnie) Johnson of Conway Arkansas and Donna Goodlow of Portland Oregon, three sisters Lois Janes of Galesburg IL, Phyllis Mentzer of Mountain Home Arkansas and Nada Leadbetter of Seattle WA, 18 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her first husband, parents, one daughter Karen Waldorf, two brothers, three sisters, one great grandchild and one great great grandchild.
She worked as a Nurses Aide in St. Mary Medical Center for 15 years retiring in 1968.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, August 27, 2004 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM Friday at the Chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Susan Mary “Susie” Haffner, Galesburg Chapel

57, 114 Westminster Drive, Mackinaw, IL, died at 6:36 PM Monday, August 23, 2004 in the emergency room of OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, IL.
She was born January 20, 1947 in Quincy, IL, the daughter of Harold W. Sr. and Vera Pauline Kesterson Steele. She married Ronald E. Gilbreath, Sr. on February 27, 1965 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on January 19, 1981. She then married Raymond L. Haffner on April 6, 1984 in Galesburg. He survives.
Also surviving are 2 sons, Ronald E. Gilbreath, Jr., Normal, IL and Randy E. (and Jennifer) Gilbreath, Duck, NC, 2 step sons, Michael R. (and Renee) Haffner, Mapleton, IL and Franklin J. (and Elizabeth) Haffner, Peoria, IL, 1 brother, Harold W. Jr. (and Norma June) Steele, Galesburg, IL, 1 sister, Sandra Steele, Indianapolis, IN, and 9 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and 1 sister.
She was a homemaker. She graduated from Galesburg High School and from Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg with a licensed practical nurse degree. She was of the Protestant faith.
Funeral will be 2 PM Friday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be 1 to 2 PM Friday at the chapel. Cremation will be accorded following the services. Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes Foundation.

Mrs. Marjorie, Carol Stegall, Abingdon Chapel

84, a resident of the Care Center of Abingdon, died at 7:20 am Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at the Care Center.
She was born on January 7, 1920 in Abingdon to Cecil and Carolyn Noll Blevins. She married Edward LeRoy Kubitz in 1943 in Washington D.C. She later married Paul Davis in 1946 in Washington D.C. She then married Milton “Mortie” Stegall in 1960 in Abingdon. He preceded her in death in 1976.
Surviving are two sons, Edward (and Consi) Kubitz of Marion, IL, Paul S. (and Sarah) Davis of Galesburg; two daughters, Luanna Palmeiri of Canyon City, CO and Sheila (and Henry) Lavato of Liberal, KS; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She grew up in Abingdon and later moved to Washington D.C. and the state of Kansas.
She worked for the treasury department as a clerk in the mapping division for many years in Washington D.C. She was a secretary for the former Stegall Insurance Agency in Abingdon and later was a caregiver for the elderly in Kansas.
She was a member of the Abingdon Christian Church.
Cremation will be accorded. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev. Raymond McLaren will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Terry Wayne Ladendorf, Galesburg Chapel

55, of 490 S. Soangetaha Rd., Galesburg died at 1:07 PM Friday, August 20, 2004 at the Galesburg Cottage Hospital’s Emergency Room.
He was born on September 2, 1948 in Galesburg, IL to Herman M. and Reva Barbero Ladendorf. He married Jane Ellen Brown in Galesburg, IL on November 16, 1971. She survives.
Also surviving is his mother, Reva Kimmitt of Galesburg, IL, a son, Toby W. (and Kristy) Ladendorf of Galesburg, IL, a daughter, Erin R. (and Tim) LeCrone of Pekin, IL and a granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother.
He worked on the railroad, then Gunther Construction Company and then was a truck driver for Burgess Brothers, Yates City, IL. He was a 1967 graduate from Galesburg High School and attended Carl Sandburg College. He was baptized by the First Presbyterian Church, Galesburg. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2257 and the Disabled American Veterans.
He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1972.
Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Stephen Bibb officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at the Chapel. Burial will be in the Knoxville (IL) Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285.

Mr. Arthur "Gosse" R. Tabb, Abingdon Chapel

80 of Abingdon, died at 10:20 am Monday, August 23, 2004 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
He was born on March 4, 1924 in Berwick to Walter and Selma Johnson Tabb. He married E. La Vonne Williamson in August of 1948. She preceded him in death on June 22, 1992.
Surviving are one son, David (and Karen) Tabb of Abingdon; one daughter, Linda (and Dave) Allison of Amana, IA; one brother, Wayne Tabb of Abingdon; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
He had lived in the Berwick and Abingdon areas all his life. He worked in the Kiln at the Abingdon Pottery for over 30 years retiring in 1986.
He was an Army veteran of WW II. He was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon.
He was of the Methodist Faith.
Private family services will be held on Wednesday at the Abingdon Cemetery with Eleanor Landon officiating. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #381. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West chapel in Abingdon is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Carmella Marie Gatt, Galesburg Chapel

95, Sarasota, FL, formerly of Galesburg, died at 6:15 AM Friday, August 13, 2004 at the Inn at Sarasota Bay Club, Sarasota.
She was born August 8, 1909 in Canton, IL, the daughter of Thomas Mugavero and Philapina Columbia. She married Charles A. Gatt on February 18, 1935 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1981.
She is survived by a son, Larry A. (and Elaine) Gatt, Sarasota, FL, a daughter, Ruby L. Covell, Sarasota, FL, 2 brothers, Ernest Columbia, Farmington, IL and Levio Columbia, Silvis, IL, 3 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Galesburg. She had been a volunteer at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg for many years. She had lived in Sarasota since 1996.
Graveside services will be 10 AM Tuesday, August 24, 2004 in St. Joseph Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Alonzo F. Treadway, Galesburg Chapel

76, of Lakeland, FL, formerly of Galesburg, died at 9:20 PM Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
He was born on December 21, 1927 in Springfield, MA to Alonzo J. and Mary Rose Baughman Treadway. He married Lois R. Seago in Fort Worth, TX on October 8, 1946. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons; Lonnie (and Carolyn) Treadway of Osage Beach, MO, Jimmy (and Jean) Treadway of Galesburg, IL and Joe Treadway of Chicago, IL, four daughters; Charlene (and Wayne) Rednour of Rio, IL, Linda Treadway of Lakeland, FL, Nancy (and Bill) Simmons of Greenbush, IL and Janice (and Tadd) Nelson of Rochester, MN, 36 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Treadway, and two sisters.
He served in the Army from 1946 to 1948.
He was an engineer for the Burlington-Northern and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroads for 39 years, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Galesburg, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with Rev. Ernest Pizzamiglio officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, August 23, 2004 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel where the Rosary will be recited at 8:00 PM. Burial will be at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be provided by the Ralph M. Nobel American Legion Post #285.

Mrs. Corinne E. “Corky” Sherwood, Galesburg Chapel

79, 917 W. North St., Galesburg, formerly of RR #1, Knoxville, IL, died at 3:35 PM Friday, August 20, 2004 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, IL.
She was born July 29, 1925 in Galesburg, the daughter of Arthur W. and Hildegarde E. Hawkinson Holst. She married Robert Glee Sherwood on November 17, 1951 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1973.
Surviving is a son, Scott Randall Sherwood, Galesburg, a daughter, Lindsay A. Sherwood, Milwaukee, WI, a brother, Arthur “Jack” (and Elizabeth) Holst, Ann Arbor, Michigan, a sister, Marilyn A. (and John) Nape, Plantation, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She was a case worker with the Illinois Department of Public Aid for several years. She then worked as a secretary for Promotivation Inc. for the past 14 years.
She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa in 1943. She graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson with a BA in foreign language in 1947. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Galesburg.
She enjoyed intellectual pursuits and continued taking classes at Bradley University in Peoria throughout her life. She was a selfless individual, who was devoted to her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, the outdoors, and birds.
Funeral will be 2 PM Tuesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Tom Larsen will officiate. Visitation will be 12:30 to 2 PM Tuesday at the chapel. Mr. Howard A. “Gummy” Gummerson, Galesburg Chapel

80, 221 Highland Ave., Galesburg, IL, died at 4:30 PM Thursday, August 19, 2004 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, IL.
He was born September 2, 1923 in Monmouth, IL, the son of Frank J. and Margie Cheser Gummerson. He married Ruth E. “Betty” Blackie on June 1, 1947 in Galesburg, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Greg (and Marti) Gummerson of Galesburg, IL and Scott (and Gigi) Gummerson of Flossmoor, IL and five grandchildren.
He served in the United States Army.
He worked as a salesperson of office equipment for Webber Book Store, Wilkinson’s Office Supply and Office Specialists, all in Galesburg, for over 40 years retiring in the spring of 1987. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1941.
He was a member and past president of the Galesburg Noon Lions Club and was a recipient of a Melvin P. Jones Fellowship. He was a former member of the Galesburg Jaycees.
He was a member of the Covenant Church in Galesburg and was a former trustee of the church.
