Mr. Ernie N. Day, Abingdon Chapel

86 of Abingdon died at 10:30 am Thursday, October 28, 2004 at his home.
He was born on December 21, 1917 in Warren County near Swan Creek to Albert Wayne and Iva Edith Hale Day. He married Margaret Stegall Armstrong on April 17, 1960 in Abingdon. She preceded him in death on April 5, 1972.
Survivng are one brother, Dr. Albert J. (and Mary Jane) Day of Watseka, IL; one sister, Jessie Shook of Waukegan; a step daughter, Margaret (and Gale) Weybright of Galesburg; a sister-in-law, Bea Day of Stronghurst; a brother-in-law, Fred Murphy, Jr. of Grayslake; 3 step grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren and 1 step great-great grandchild; also several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters, two sister-in-laws, two brother-in-laws and four nephews.
He was called to active military duty in March of 1941 with the 123rd Field Artillery Battalion, 33rd Division, 6th Army of the Illinois National Guard and continued to serve during WW II. He served for thirty-three months overseas in New Guinea, the Dutch East Indies, Philippines and Japan. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy in the Philippines.
After the war, he farmed in the Berwick area in Warren County for several years with his brother Kenneth and later by himself.
He was a very active member of 59 years and was a past commander of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon.
Services will be at 2:00 pm Sunday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon. Rev. Raymond McLaren will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #381. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Sunday at the chapel.

Mrs. Eileen Claire Duncan, Galesburg Chapel

84, of 51 S. Academy St., Galesburg, IL died at 11:05 PM Monday October 25, 2004 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, IL.
She was born August 18, 1920 in Galesburg, IL, the daughter of John D. and Olive Mae Douglas Gunther. She married Rex Drake in Galesburg, IL in 1938. She later married Rex N. Duncan in Galesburg, IL on October 19, 1963. He preceded her in death on December 23, 1998.
She is survived by one daughter, Becky (and Larry) Boyd of Galesburg, IL, one step son, Jack Duncan of Dallas, TX, two step daughters, Diane (and Paul) Hunt of Springfield, IL and Pam (and Denny) Totzke of Deforest, WI, twelve grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, John D. “Pete” Gunther.
She was a homemaker. She lived in Galesburg her entire life. She was a member of the 40 & 8 of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285. She was a member of the First Christian Church.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11:30 AM Saturday October 30, 2004 in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Greg Fitch will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association or to the Knox County Humane Society. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Clarence E. Brown, Galesburg Chapel

92, 2245 N. Seminary St., Galesburg, died at 1:02 AM Wednesday, October 27, 2004 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
He was born February 18, 1912 in Aledo, IL, the son of David A. and Grace Hickock Brown. He married Lillian Bittner on January 12, 1946 in Evanston, IL. She preceded him in death on January 15, 2002.
He is survived by a son, David (and Cindy) Brown, Boise, Idaho, a daughter, Judy (and Raymond) Anderson, Papillion, Nebraska, a sister, Irene Kimball, Aledo, IL, and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother and 3 sisters.
He was a buyer in the hog division of Armour and Company for 40 years, retiring in 1977. He graduated from Aledo High School and Monmouth College. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Galesburg. He served in the United States Army during WWII and was stationed in China, Burma, and India.
Private family funeral will be Saturday in Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. The Rev. Daniel Smith will officiate. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 7:30 PM Friday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.

Mr. Richard L. Hardy, Galesburg Chapel

76, 1384 N. Henderson St., Galesburg, IL, died at 4 AM Monday, October 25, 2004 in Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg.
He was born March 12, 1928 in Paris, IL, the son of Austin E. and Margaret Helen Dixon Hardy. He married Wandalee Babb on January 22, 1949 in Paris, IL. She preceded him in death in 1963. He later married Rosemary Stewart in 1964 in Paris, IL.
He is survived by 2 sons, Kerry R. Hardy, Highlands Ranch, CO and Mark E. Hardy, Mattoon, IL, 3 daughters, Darla Hardy-Freeze, Indianapolis, IN, Valerie (and David) Hardy-Lewis, Georgetown, IL, and Lori Hardy-Boling, Paris, IL, 10 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Joseph Hardy and a sister, Barbara Hardy Cooley.
He was an employee of Pearman Pharmacy in Paris, IL from 1942 until purchasing the business in 1963. He continued there until 1968. He later moved to Galesburg, IL.
He graduated from Paris (IL) High School in 1946. He attended both Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN and Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL. He was a member of the First Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge, and the Elks Lodge, all of Paris, IL.
Cremation will be accorded. Private family burial of ashes will be in Edgar Cemetery, Paris, IL. The Rev. Pat Allin will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bernice S. Dowd, Galesburg Chapel

76, of 1009 Accomodation St., Galesburg, IL, died at 3:15 AM Monday October 25, 2004 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, IL.
She was born April 25, 1928 in Terre Haute, IN, the daughter of Harvey and Pauline Wilcox Cofield. She married William Dowd, Jr. on September 17, 1950 in Terre Haute, IN. He preceded her in death in February of 1991.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond H. Dowd of Galesburg, IL and Edward L. (and Hannelore) Dowd of Oskaloosa, IA and two grandsons.
She worked in housekeeping for Knox College for several years. She lived in Galesburg since 1950. She graduated from high school in Terre Haute, IN. She was a member of the Israel of Gods Church and was the Secretary of the Saint Funds of the church for several years.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 PM Friday October 29, 2004 in the Israel of Gods Church. The Rev. Harold Boyd and the Bishop Ronald Henton will officiate. Visitation will be 1:00-2:00 PM Friday at the church. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Mrs. Anita M. Leon Martinez, Galesburg Chapel

73, 279 Michigan Ave., Galesburg, died at 10:52 AM Monday, October 25, 2004 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born May 11, 1931 in Kewanee, IL, the daughter of Julian and Margarita Rivas Leon. She married Pedro “Buff” Martinez on September 3, 1966 in Kewanee, IL. He preceded her in death on October 28, 1984.
She is survived by a son, Michael (and Judy) Leon, Galesburg, a daughter, Victoria (and Curtis) McMillon, Brooklyn Park, MN, 2 brothers, Richard Leon, Lansing, Michigan and Felimon (and Elsie) Leon, Kewanee, IL, 2 sisters, Consuelo Howell, Rio, IL and Olivia (and Peter) Lopez, East Moline, IL, and 2 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Nicholas Martinez.
She was a seamstress last working for Carhartt Inc., Galesburg. She had lived in Galesburg since 1966. She graduated from Kewanee High School in 1949. She attended Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Galesburg.
Funeral will be 10 AM Thursday in Corpus Christi Catholic Church. The Rev. Ernest Pizzamiglio will officiate. There will be no visitation. Private family burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Mrs. Flossie M. Johnson, Galesburg Chapel

92, formerly of 3295 Lincoln Park Dr. Galesburg IL died at 6:40 AM Sunday October 24, 2004 in Rosewood Care Center Galesburg.
She was born April 28, 1912 in Bowen IL Adams Co. the daughter of Levi and Eva Clark Terrill. She married Franklin L. Johnson in Aledo IL on June 16, 1930. He died March 11, 1998.
Survivors include one son Bob L. (wife Mitzi) Johnson of Coal Valley IL, four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by one daughter and one sister.
She was a homemaker. She was a volunteer for the Knox County Chapter American Red Cross. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 PM Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Kurt Kendall will officiate. Visitation will be 12:30-1:30 PM Wednesday. Mrs. Helen L. Vilardo, Galesburg Chapel

87, formerly of Wataga and Victoria IL, died at 12:37 PM Sunday October 24, 2004 in Cottage Hospital.
She was born January 3, 1917 in Whitehall IL the daughter of Calvin and Dora Sturdevant Monroe. She married David R. Vilardo on April 30, 1934 in Galesburg IL. He died August 23, 1993.
She is survived by one son Donnie D. (wife Susan) Vilardo of Galesburg IL, one daughter Darlene L. (husband Gary) Gibbs of Victoria IL, nine grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
She was a homemaker. She lived in Wataga IL for 25 years and Victoria IL for several years. She was a member of the Covenant Church.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 AM Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Thomas Ek will officiate. Visitation will be 9:00-10:00 AM at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials can be made to the Covenant Church or to the Parkinsons Disease Foundation.

Mr. Lloyd Lewis Smith, Galesburg Chapel

89, 981 Hawkinson Ave., Galesburg, died at 5:45 AM Wednesday, October 20, 2004 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born July 19, 1915 in Washington, IL, the son of Lewis and Bessie Mace Smith. He married Wilma Donaldson. He later married Maggie Semington. She preceded him in death.
He is survived by a son, Stanley Smith of Galesburg, IL and a step-son, Marlo Brannon of Galesburg, 6 daughters, Phyllis McDonald, Peoria, Sherry Williams in California, Wynonia (and James) Grant, Peoria, Besse Smith, Germantown Hills, IL, Rhoda Semington, Galesburg, and Gwen Wilson, Kansas City, MO, a step daughter, Carmelia Brannon, Toledo, OH, 25 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 14 great great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and special friends who cared for him, William Franklin and Eloise Hall, both of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by 4 sons, Cordell, Larry, Lloyd, Jr., and Milton, one sister and a grandson.
He was an upholsterer for Leach Dodge in Galesburg for 30 years. He was a member of Allen Chapel AME Church, Galesburg. He served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 during WWII. He was a prisoner of war for 18 months at a camp in Belgium.
Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Tuesday in East Linwood Cemetery. The Rev. Jon Sibley will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Visitation will be 12:30 to 1:15 PM Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Robert C. "Little Swede" Anderson, Abingdon Chapel

79 of Abingdon, died at 3:00 pm Thursday, October 21, 2004 at his home.
He was born on November 16, 1924 near Abingdon to Glen O. and Maude Trulock Anderson. He married Frances Tracy in 1945. He later married Maryetta Tessier Ross in May of 1963. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Bobby (and Wilma) Anderson of Bushnell, C.G. “Chip” Anderson of Ellisville; two daughters, Georgetta (and Tom) Helms of Galesburg and Pam (and Tony) Allen of Abingdon; one brother, Billy C. Anderson of Avon; his stepmother, Judith Anderson of Maquon; one half-brother, Glen Anderson of Ft. Louis, WA; one half-sister, Marjorie Taflinger of Salem AR; two stepbrothers, Curtis Miller of Wataga and Joe Miller of Roseville; 8 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and several step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters and a daughter-in-law, Linda Anderson.
He was raised in the St. Augustine and Abingdon areas and graduated from Avon High School. He was a member of the St. Augustine Christian Church.
He worked at Maytag for 32 ½ years, last working as a forklift driver in the warehouse.
He was a lifetime member of the Knox County Sportsman Club.
Graveside service will be at 11:00 am Monday at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev. Paul Dinges will officiate. Friends may call from 4:00 until 6:00 pm Sunday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon.
