Mrs. Irene Corbin, Galesburg Chapel

95, 543 N. West St., Galesburg, died at 7:25 AM Friday, June 24, 2005 in Rosewood Care Center.
She was born April 21, 1910 in Avon, IL, the daughter of Clyde H. and Nellie May Gillett Duffield. She married Forrest E. “Corby” Corbin on December 6, 1932 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on August 26, 1987.
She is survived by a sister, Eula D. Johns, Avon, IL.
She owned and operated Corbin’s Furniture and Auction Service in Galesburg along with her husband for 35 years.
She graduated from Avon High School in 1928. She was a former member of the Universalist Church in Avon, IL.
Graveside services will be 10 AM Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Tom Heather will officiate. Visitation will be 9 to 10 AM Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the activity fund at Rosewood Care Center.

Mr. V. Joe Blickem, Galesburg Chapel

age 80, 184 S. Gilson St., Knoxville, IL died Saturday June 25, 2005 at 1:44 AM at OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg, IL.
He was born March 18, 1925 in Plymouth, IA, the son of Elihu and Grace Riley Blickem. He married Wanda Brown December 11, 1942 in Shelbyville, IL.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda, two sons, V. Joe Blickem Jr., Wataga, IL and Norman L. (and Jo) Blickem, Knoxville, IL, two daughters, Mary (and Bill) Higgins, Knoxville, IL and Linda (and Jeff) Feely, Wataga, IL, two brothers, Charles Blickem, Cowden, IL and Robert Blickem, Decatur, IL, two sisters, Lois Hansen, Chicago, IL and Iris Martin, Effingham, IL, eleven grandchildren, and eighteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, William E. Blickem, four brothers and three sisters.
He graduated from Cowden High School. He was an operating engineer for Local 965, Springfield, IL and was a pipeline superintendent. He was a member of the Monticello, IL Masonic Lodge, American Legion Post #749, and Elks Lodge #849. He was of the Christian faith. He served in the US Army during WWII in the Phillipines and Japan.
He loved gardening, refinishing furniture, and woodworking.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Tuesday June 28, 2005 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel Galesburg, with Rev. Kirk Kendall officiating. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:30-8 PM at the chapel. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery, Knoxville, IL, with Military Rites conducted by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Rescue Mission or the Elks Crippled Children’s Fund.

Mrs. Helen L. Kensel, Galesburg Chapel

92, formerly of Galesburg, died Friday, May 20, 2005 in Asta Care Center, Paxton, IL.
She was born June 15, 1912 in Galesburg, the daughter of Ernest and Margaret Ruland Larimer. She married Richard M. Kensel on September 5, 1936 in Fulton, MO.
She is survived by a son, Richard L. Kensel, Acton, CA, 5 grandchildren, including Elisabeth M. Chickina, Paxton, IL who cared for her, and 3 great grandchildren.
She was a recorder at Knox College for 30 years, retiring in 1982. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1930 and from Knox College. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Galesburg. She was a member of Phi Mu at Knox College.
Cremation will be accorded. Memorial graveside services will be 11 AM Monday, June 27, 2005 in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Marilyn Anell will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Earl L. "Andy" Anderson, Galesburg Chapel

91, of Cameron, IL died at 7:02 AM Friday June 24, 2005 in Marigold Health Care Center, Galesburg, IL.

He was born September 15, 1913 in Cameron, IL, the son of Fritz Walter and Elsie Bertha Johnson Anderson. He married Frances A. Smith on December 4, 1933 in Freeport, IL. She preceded him in death on September 15, 2003.
He is survived by one granddaughter, Jessica Beth Anderson of Springfield, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, John L. Anderson on June 21, 2002.
He served in the US Army as a pilot with the Ferry Division Air Transport Command during WWII.
He was a farmer in the Coldbrook area his entire life, retiring in 1970. He was a Civilian Commercial Pilot for 53 years, working for Currey Flying Service, Galesburg, IL, Midwest Manufacturing, Galesburg IL, Admiral Corporation, Galesburg, IL, and Aeroline Flight Service, Moline IL. He graduated from Galesburg High school in 1931. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Funeral will be 10 AM Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be 9 to 10 AM Monday at the chapel. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Memorials can be made to the Stearman Fly-In or to the Community Chorus.

Ms. Shirley J. Baumgardner, Galesburg Chapel

76, 1072 Olive St., Galesburg, died at 7:22 PM Saturday, June 25, 2005 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born July 24, 1928 in Portland, OR, the daughter of Ernest and Georgia Kissel Comstock. She married Eddie Baumgardner in 1953 in California. He preceded her in death.
She is survived by a brother, Earnest (and Erlinda) Comstock, Aledo, IL and 4 nieces.
She was a laborer at Butler Manufacturing Company in Galesburg for 15 years. She retired in 1991. She was formerly of the Quad City area and graduated from high school in Rock Falls, IL.
Cremation will be accorded. No services or visitation is planned. Memorials can be made to the Galesburg Rescue Mission. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ethel B. Whipple, Galesburg Chapel

99, 1427 Knox Hwy. 12, Dahinda, IL, died at 1:15 AM Monday, June 20, 2005 in Marigold Health Care Center.
She was born March 27, 1906 in Knox County, near Dahinda, IL, the daughter of Henry and Betsy Anderson. She married Percy Whipple in 1949 in Clinton, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1967.
She is survived by 2 sons, Wyman K. (and Roberta) Whipple, Dahinda, IL and Gary F. Whipple, Wichita, KS. She was preceded in death by a brother and 2 sisters.
She was a school teacher in Wataga. She also taught student nursing at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. She graduated from high school in Dahinda, IL. She graduated from Knox College. She also received a registered nurse degree from Galesburg Cottage Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of the Parkview Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was a member of the Knox-Lombard 50 year club. She had lived in Dahinda, IL and Clinton, Iowa. She had lived in Galesburg most of her life.
Graveside services will be 11 AM Friday in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. The Pastor Birger Draget will officiate. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 PM Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the Park View Seventh-day Adventist Church or Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

Mr. William Erle “Bill” Spilman, Galesburg Chapel

58, 970 Hawkinson Ave., Galesburg, died at 7:22 PM Tuesday, June 21, 2005 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born November 12, 1946 in Galesburg, the son of Clarence and Wilma G. Scannell Spilman. He married Irma Cadwell on June 12, 1966 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving are 3 sons, William J. (and Mary) Spilman, Ronald L. (and Joanne) Spilman, and James P. Spilman and 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a maintenance equipment operator for the former Galesburg Research Hospital for 11 years. He then was an auto detailer for Yemm Chevrolet in Galesburg. He retired in 2003 due to his health.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1965. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Galesburg. He was a member of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. He served in the United States Navy for 6 months as an electronics tech., stationed at Great Lakes, IL. He had lived in Galesburg most of his life.
Funeral will be 1 PM Friday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Gina Sheridan will officiate. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 PM Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Maquon Cemetery, Maquon, IL with military rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Mr. John W. Simmons, Abingdon Chapel

72, of 2082 Knox Road 150E, Galesburg, died at 7:30 pm Sunday, June 19, 2005 at the intersection of US 150 and Knox Highway 2, near Rio in Knox County.
He was born on January 10, 1933 in Danville, Ohio to Hershchell and Mary Lucille Lisk Simmons. He married Marilyn J. Haas on December 8, 1951 in Abingdon. He later married Judith M. Peterson Sotelo on October 7, 1971 in Warren County. She preceded him in death on October 3, 1999.
Surviving are four sons, Jack E. (wife Betsy) Simmons of Craig, Montana, Bill (wife Melissa) Simmons of Galesburg, IL, Kurt Sotelo of Galesburg, IL, and Ted Sotelo of Port Orchard, WA, three daughters, Christy (husband Earl) Ekstrom of Shepherdsville, KY, Kim Sharp of Galesburg, IL, and Mary Vanover of Port Orchard, WA, one brother, Don (wife Judy) Simmons of Alpha, IL, one sister, Margaret (husband Lee) Schwenn of La Claire, IA, eleven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and a special friend, Betty Simkins of Galesburg, IL. He was preceded by his parents, one son, Troy Sotelo, and three brothers.
He worked as a General Foreman for Maytag Corporation for 45 years, retiring in 1996. He farmed in the Abingdon area for several years. He had a Christmas tree farm in Henderson Grove. He lived in Abingdon most his life. He was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Galesburg, where he served as an elder and was a co-founder of the Country Gospel Group.
Services will be at 10:00 am Thursday at the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Galesburg. Rev. Daniel Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 until 8:00 pm Wednesday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Galesburg IL.

Mr. Joseph C. Fergusson, Galesburg Chapel


85, 1252 S. Kellogg St. Galesburg IL died at 5:55 AM Thursday June 16, 2005 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

He was born May 25, 1920 in London England the son of John Fergusson. He married Kathleen O’Leary in London England on August 21, 1948. She died on September 11, 1987.

Survivors include three sons Michael (wife Cheryl) of Galesburg IL, Stephen of Knoxville IL, and Peter of Chicago IL, one daughter Diane (husband Dave) Guasterferi of Chicago IL and four grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and ten brothers and sisters.

He worked for Gale Products for 15 years. He has lived in Galesburg since 1960. He graduated from high school in England. He served in the English Armed Forces during WWII. He was a former member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Knoxville IL.

Graveside services are scheduled for 10 AM Monday in the Knoxville Cemetery Knoxville IL. The Rev. Phylis Sterr will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the First United Presbyterian Church in Knoxville IL. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Margaret G. Knouse, Galesburg Chapel

91, of 275 Carl Sandburg Dr., Galesburg, IL died at 10:15 PM Friday, June 10, 2005 at Marigold Health Care Center.
She was born November 8, 1913 in Cross Corners, AR to Albert and Iva Lee Winger Phipps. She married Theodore F. Knouse on March 31, 1934 in Liberty, MO. He preceded her in death on July 29, 1980.
Surviving is one son, Theodore (and Judy) Knouse of Kansas City, KS, one daughter Oneita (and Elmer) Bergquist of Galesburg, IL, seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one sister.
She was a waitress in Kansas City area restaurants for several years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Galesburg.
Graveside service will be 10:00 AM Thursday, June 16, 2005 at Mount Hope Cemetery, Kansas City, KS.
