CSC instructor was caring individualist
Jim Peelle found dead at home

THE REGISTER-MAIL
GALESBURG - Carl Sandburg College administrators are scrambling to find instructors for four marketing classes after the instructor was found dead in his home Sunday.
Jim Peelle, 66, Henderson, was known for his love of students and teaching, said friend Jim Graham, associate dean of social and behavioral sciences.
He taught marketing and mid-management classes at Carl Sandburg College since 1980 and Bradley University and Peoria District 150 before that.
"He liked to see kids learn and enjoy themselves in the process," friend Fritz Archer said.
Peelle loved to use simulations and games for instruction, Graham said.
He was named CSC Teacher of the Year in 1983-84, and was adviser for the mid-management club that won an award and traveled to New York to receive it.
Graham said Peelle was creative in the ways he taught his business students. Peelle felt it was important to be involved in the classes, and not just lecture to a group of students.
For three years, Peelle’s classes rented space at the Sandburg Mall to sell sweatshirts and other merchandise as a learning experiment. Graham also said Peelle’s classes made T-shirts spoofing Lake Storey by calling it "Scum Bay" to sell on campus.
He also bought pizza for students for helping him on other projects, Archer said.
"He was an individualist if there ever was one," Graham said. "He was his own person."
A Quad Cities newspaper once interviewed Peelle before the Bix 7 when he was seen smoking a cigarette before running the popular annual foot race.
Archer said he loved animals and had three large dogs he adopted from an animal shelter because no one else would adopt them. He also gave money to charities.
Peelle was a big sports fan, once scouting for the Bradley football team, and enjoyed watching high school tournaments and playoff games.
CSC allowed Peelle to take sick leave to recover from bypass surgery for this term, Graham said, but Peelle saw it as his obligation to teach this term.
