Rev. Marvin S. Wolford, Abingdon Chapel

73, of Wilmore, KY went to be with his Lord on Monday afternoon, April 24th, 2006 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY.
He was born on December 28, 1932 to Stanley and Alice (Tolley) Wolford of Abingdon, Illinois. Marvin married Jean Roberson of Abingdon on December 19, 1957. They were married in New York on the “Bride and Groom” TV show. She survives.
Marvin is also survived by three sons, Tom (Donna) Wolford of Fredericksburg, VA; Steve (Debbie) Wolford of Irvine, CA; Andy (Dana) Wolford of Wilmore, KY and five grandsons and a granddaughter; his brother Arthur (Norma Jean) Wolford and a sister Patricia (Harold) Dunlap, both of Abingdon.
After Abingdon High School, Marvin attended Western Illinois State Teacher’s College (University) in Macomb, completing his degree in Agriculture Education at the University of Illinois in Champaign. He attended Asbury Theological Seminary, receiving his Master’s of Divinity at Candler’s School of Theology, Emory University. He earned his Doctorate in Missions at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
With a passion for the people of Africa, Marvin spent most of his life with Jean in Congo, with the United Methodist Mission Board. He did many things – big-game hunter, pilot, mechanic, builder, evangelist – but at heart he was a pastor. His burning desire was to introduce people to Christ, and together with Jean, their life’s work, translating the Bible into the Uruund language, took 38 years. Since retiring from active missionary service, Marv and Jean made Wilmore, KY their home.
Marv said his hobbies included Jean, mechanics and reading.
Memorial Services will be held simultaneously in the Wilmore United Methodist Church, and the Mulunguishi Seminary in Congo on Wednesday, April 26, 7:00pm (1:00am in Africa).
Local visitation will be from 10-11am Friday, April 28 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church followed by the service at 11am. Burial will be held at the Abingdon Cemetery.

Mrs. Barbara J. Hix, Galesburg Chapel

77, 900 W. Dayton St., Galesburg, died at 11:38 AM Tuesday, April 25, 2006 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
She was born April 8, 1929 in Galesburg, the daughter of Elic L. and Eleanor Morrissey Morrison. She married David L. Hix on August 19, 1950 in Galesburg.
She is survived by 2 sons, Jeffrey Hix (and Monika Delle), Willowbrook, IL and David Hix (and Julie Luper), Galesburg, a daughter, Laurie (and Chuck) Capan, Moline, IL, a brother, Jack Morrison, Galesburg, 5 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother.
She was an LPN, working at the former Galesburg Mental Health Center and then at Henry C. Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg. She retired in 1992. She graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1947 and from Carl Sandburg College in 1977. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. She was a member of A.F.S.C.M.E.
Memorial service will be 7 PM Friday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be 6 to 7 PM Friday at the chapel. Memorials can be made to OSF St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary.

Dr. Charles W. Carman, Galesburg Chapel

81, 3038 Parkway Court, Galesburg, died at 11:15 AM Thursday, April 20, 2006 in Seminary Manor.
He was born October 2, 1924 in Chicago, IL, the son of Charles A. and Elizabeth V. Ford Carman. He married Elizabeth F. Chatters on August 15, 1947 in Morgan Park, IL. She preceded him in death on December 3, 1988. He then married Frances Van Gieson on May 5, 1990 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving is a son, Charles H. Carman, Northport, MI, 2 daughters, Cynthia F. Carman Rich (and husband V. James Rich), Galesburg and Anne E. Carman-Hendel (husband Jerry Hendel), Monmouth, IL, a sister, Charlotte E. Foote, Carbondale, IL, 4 grandchildren, and one step grandchild.
He graduated from the Harvard School for Boys High School in 1942. He attended Kalamazoo College for 1 year and then Western Michigan University for 1 year. He then entered the United States Navy and served during WWII as an ensign. Following discharge from the military, he graduated from Dennison University and the University of Illinois Dental School.
In 1951, he came to Galesburg to practice dentistry. He continued in practice for 35 years, retiring in 1986.
He attended First Baptist Church and Central Congregational Church, both in Galesburg. He was a former member and past president of the Galesburg Kiwanis Club and the Galesburg Community Chorus. He was an avid tennis player and was a former member of the Galesburg Tennis Association. He won the Senior Olympics Tennis Division in Springfield, IL and participated in the National Senior Olympics in Syracuse, NY. He was a member of the Prairie Valley Dental Society.
Memorial services will be 4 PM Tuesday, April 25, 2006 in Central Congregational Church. The Revs. Tom Heather and Tom Larsen will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Burial will be in Northport, MI. Memorials can be made to Galesburg Community Chorus or a charity of the donor’s choice. Mrs. Joyce L. Sharer, Galesburg Chapel

76, of 54 S. Farnham St, Galesburg, IL died at 9:30 AM Saturday, April 15, 2006 at Heartland Heath Care Center, Galesburg.
She was born on October 17, 1929 in Sciota, IL to Irvin and Edith Hainline Anderson. She married Sterling Davis. She then married John Sharer.
She is survived by two sons, Jerry Davis of Macomb, IL and Jamie (and Rhonda) Sharer of Palatka, FL, a daughter, Julie Davis of Macomb, two sisters, Marjorie Dowell of Abingdon, IL and Lois Kay (and Dean) Twaddle of Macomb, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Anderson, and a grandson, Jamie Davis.
After retiring from Admiral Corporation, she worked at the Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center in Galesburg.
She was active in Emotions Anonymous and Al-Anon. She was a founding board member of Serenity Club. She was a 1947 graduate of Good Hope (IL) High School.
Memorial services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, April 22, 2006 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Daniel Siems officiating. Private graveside service will be at the Oakwood Cemetery in Macomb. Memorials may be made to the Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center or the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Landon Edward Beyer, Galesburg Chapel

56, 464 N. Prairie St., Galesburg, IL, died at 3:30 PM Saturday, April 15, 2006 in Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg.
He was born August 30, 1949 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the son of Harold and Helen Meier Beyer. He married Louise Venden in 1967. He married Linda Dybas in 1986.
Surviving is his wife, Linda Dybas of Galesburg, his parents, Harold and Helen Beyer of Neillsville, WI, a son, Nathaniel (Nate) Beyer of Boston, MA, a daughter, Emma Beyer of Galesburg, a brother, Harold “Bud” Beyer of Monroe, WI, a sister, Rebecca Winter of Lake Mills, WI, and a granddaughter, Zoe. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Leah Beyer.
He had a long and distinguished career as an educator.
He was a Professor and Associate Dean of Teacher Education at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN from 1997 to 2004, Professor and Chair of the Knox College Department of Educational Studies in Galesburg from 1981 to 1984 and from 1990 to 1994, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Education at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa from 1986 to 1988 and Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester Graduate School of Education and Human Development in Rochester, NY from 1984 to 1986. He had also been a K through 12 classroom teacher, in Stoughton, Oregon and Madison, WI and the Hannahville Indian Reservation, Wilson, MI. He also served on the school board in Stoughton, WI 1974-1977.
He received his higher education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He received two bachelor’s degrees with a major in Philosophy, 1972, and a major in Curriculum and Instruction, 1976, a Master’s degree in Philosophy, 1974, and a PhD from the School of Education in 1981.
He is the author of eight books and over 80 publications in professional journals. He was an active member of several professional societies. During his career he organized numerous conferences on education and curricular issues in addition to being the invited keynote speaker at international education conferences, most recently in Taiwan and Portugal. Over his career he has been the recipient of numerous awards for excellence in teaching including the Distinguished Elementary Education Alumni Award from the U. of Wisconsin School of Education.
He spent his personal and professional life pursuing social justice through education. He loved his home state of Wisconsin and had hoped to retire there.

Mrs. Margaret Jane Underwood Mitchell, Galesburg Chapel

90, formerly of 104 Lakeview Drive, East Galesburg, died at 2:15 PM Friday, April 14, 2006 in Marigold Health Care Center, Galesburg.
She was born March 27, 1916 in Galesburg, the daughter of Jesse J. and Olive Mae Sharp Underwood. She married Herbert E. Mitchell on December 24, 1937 in Davenport, Iowa. He preceded her in death on August 23, 1987.
She is survived by three daughters, Margaret Joan Mitchell of Morton, IL, Sue Love of Madison, FL and Bea Kay Hopping of East Galesburg, one brother, Thomas R. (and Linda) Underwood, Sr. of Galesburg, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sons-in-law.
She worked as a beautician in her home for many years. She also worked at the Pizza House in Galesburg, the Knox County Nursing Home, Knox Manor, and McClellan’s Dime Store. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1936 and from the former Morris School of Beauty. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. She was also a member and Past Oracle of the Royal Neighbors of America, Past President of the Eagle’s Auxiliary and a former 4-H leader.
Cremation will be accorded. Memorial graveside services will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 20, 2006 in Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Michel D. Clark officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Walter G. Johnson, Galesburg Chapel

84, of 220 Illini Dr., Galesburg, IL died at 12:52 PM Saturday, April 15, 2006 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born on November 14, 1921 in Kansas City, MO to Oscar and Laura Schimmel Johnson. He married Mary Kathryn Tennie in Seattle, WA on May 3, 1943. She preceded him in death on May 12, 1999.
He is survived by two sons, Donald K. (and Barbara) Johnson of Peoria, IL and Richard A. (and Karen) Johnson of Media, PA, two grandchildren, Maggie and Peter, and a great granddaughter.
Mr. Johnson began his career as a mail boy in the Kansas City office of Butler Manufacturing. He was appointed the youngest plant manager to head up Butler’s growing international presence in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. He received other promotions in Butler’s Union Tank Division spending time in Houston, TX and Kansas City. He retired in 1980 as the Plant Manager and Corporate Vice President of Manufacturing for Butler in Galesburg, IL.
He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Galesburg Cottage Hospital where he was instrumental in enabling a new addition to the hospital. He was a board member of the former United Federal Savings and Loan. He served as a member of the YMCA, the Galesburg Area Chamber of Commerce, and the former Prairie Council of the Boy Scouts of American boards of directors. He also served as a board member and past president of the Knox County United Way and Soangetaha Country Club.
He was a man passionate about helping other, a dedicated husband and father. A man driven to shoot par with his golfing buddies. A man that will be sorely missed.
He was a Master Sergeant in the US Army during World War II serving in the European theatre.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Thursday, April 20, 2006 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Tom Heather officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, April, 19, 2006 at the Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Galesburg. Military honors will be provided by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285. Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Community and Health Foundation.

Mrs. Carol Ann Klinebough, Abingdon Chapel

49 of 705 N. Jefferson St., Abingdon, IL, formerly of Burlington, IA died at 9:45 AM Tuesday April 18, 2006 at her home.
She was born November 30, 1956 in Moline, IL the daughter of Jack L. and Mildred E. Fry Huber, Sr. She married William Klinebough in Galesburg, IL on August 13, 1975.
Survivors include her parents, Jack and Mildred Huber of Abingdon, one son, Micky Huber of Abingdon, two daughters, Jamie Klinebough of Abingdon and Jennifer Klinebough of Monmouth, IL, five brothers, Joe Huber of Abingdon, Frank Huber of Abingdon, Gary (wife Tammy) Huber of Hermon, IL, Roy (wife Suzie) Huber of Abingdon, and Jack Huber of Abingdon, three sisters, Rose (husband Alan) Flynn of Abingdon, Shelly (husband Lew) Jones of Abingdon, and Chris Horsford of Abingdon, nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She worked as a school bus monitor and was also a homemaker. She lived in Burlington, IA since 1992. She also had lived in Las Vegas and recently Abingdon.
Graveside services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Thursday April 20, 2006 in Abingdon Cemetery. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Visitation will be from 12:00-1:00 PM Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Memorials can be made to the family.

Mrs. Viola (Ruth) Messenger, Galesburg Chapel

77 of 839 Arnold St., Galesburg, IL died at 2:08 AM Thursday April 13, 2006 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born April 14, 1928 in North Olmstead, OH the daughter of George F. and Beatrice Walters Chambers. She married Conrad L. Messenger in Galesburg on July 20, 1946. He died October 17, 2004.
She is survived by three sons, Stephen (wife Pam) Messenger of Jacksonville, FL, David (wife Peggy) Messenger of Normal, IL and Michael (wife Missy) Messenger of Galesburg, one daughter, Cathleen (husband Bill) Beard of High Ridge, Missouri, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and three sisters.
She first worked for Park Drive Dairy for 16 years. She worked for McDonalds for 10 years. She moved to England at the age of 2 until she was 16, moving to Galesburg and living here since 1946. She was a member of the English War Brides. She was a Girl Scout Leader for 6 years. She was a member of the Central Congregational Church. She taught Sunday school and was a Bible School teacher.
Private family graveside services are scheduled for Friday April 21, 2006 in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:00 PM Wednesday April 19, 2006 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Cremation will be accorded following the visitation. Memorials can be made to the Central Congregational Church.

Mr. Jack Cline, Galesburg Chapel

80, 365 Division St., Galesburg, died at 10:35 AM Sunday, April 16, 2006 in Marigold Health Care Center.
He was born May 8, 1925 in Abingdon, IL, the son of John and Maud Pointer Cline. He married Shirley J. Patty on August 22, 1954 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on June 12, 2005.
He is survived by a son, Robert (and Debra) Cline, Galesburg and 3 grandchildren, Erika, Jon, and Jessica. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 5 sisters.
He worked in auto sales, first working for Galesburg Lincoln Mercury and then the former Jeff Good Chevrolet, which became Weaver Yemm. He then was a partner in Grand Motor Sales for 10 years, retiring in 1990. Since retirement, he had driven cars part time for Bob Lindsay Honda Toyota until this year. He graduated from Galesburg High School.
Graveside service will be 10 AM Wednesday in East Linwood Cemetery. The Rev. Raymond McLaren will officiate. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 PM Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials can be made to the Galesburg High School Swim Team.
