Mr. John W. Adams, Galesburg Chapel

79, Fargo, ND, formerly of 2946 Parkway Court, Galesburg, IL, died at 3 PM Saturday, August 26, 2006 in Merit Care Medical Center, Fargo.
He was born May 13, 1927 in Galesburg, the son of Harry W. and Adah Peterson Adams. He married Shirley Hatch on June 5, 1949 in Oneida, IL. She preceded him in death on July 2, 2005.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Sally (and Jerry) Haugen, Fargo and Teresa (and Wayne) Crozat, New Orleans, LA, a sister, Hester Rask, London Mills, IL, 3 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters.
He was the manager of Butler Credit Union in Galesburg for 38 years. He retired in 1985.
He lived in Oneida for 18 years, then in Galesburg for most of his life before moving to Fargo in October of 2005. He graduated from Oneida High School in 1945. He attended the University of Illinois for 3 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285, both in Galesburg. He was also a member of the Credit Union Movement and held the second highest position in the country.
He served in the United States Navy for 21 months during WWII, where he was a Pharmacist Mate First Class.
Funeral will be 11 AM Thursday, August 31, 2006 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. David B. Parker will officiate. Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 AM Thursday at the chapel. Mrs. Marie E. McMullin, Galesburg Chapel

91, formerly of 849 Monroe St., Galesburg died at 4:43 AM Sunday August 27, 2006 in Heartland Health Care Center.
She was born January 26, 1915 in Galesburg, the daughter of Ernest B. and Edith Carrier Stanbary. She married Harley C. McMullin in Galesburg on January 24, 1937. He preceded her in death on September 24, 1991.
She is survived by two sons, Danny (wife Marge) McMullin of Galesburg and Richard McMullin of Buenos Aires, Argentina, one brother, Brook (wife Irene) Stanbary of Mountain Home, AK, one sister, Gloria (husband Robert) Sheckler of Gladstone, IL, three grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters.
She worked for O.T. Johnson Department Store for 17 years and also worked for Vanda Beauty Products for 20 years. She lived in rural Knoxville, IL from 1951-1973 on a farm, which later became Laurel Greens Golf Course. She graduated from Burlington High School. She was a member of the MYN (Meet Your Neighbors) Club, TOPS, Widows Club, Bridge Clubs. She was a member of the Knoxville United Methodist Church.
Graveside services are scheduled for 12:00 PM Tuesday in Trivoli Cemetery, Trivoli, IL. The Rev. Frederick Larner will officiate. Mr. Thomas O. Poole, Jr., Galesburg Chapel

81, formerly of 311 E. Simmons St., Galesburg, IL died at 2 AM Monday August 28, 2006 in Marigold Health Care Center.
He was born May 16, 1925 in Galesburg, the son of Thomas O. and Florence Eastburg Poole, Sr. He married Margaret M. Jones in Galesburg in 1946.
He is survived by one daughter, Carol Poole of Tacoma, WA, one sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Morrissey of Oneida, IL, and a niece and nephew, Andy and Sue Morrissey of Oneida, who cared for him. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Susan Poole.
He served in the US Navy during WWII from 1943-1946. He began teaching in August of 1954 in Abingdon, IL. In August 1956 he began teaching for Galesburg School District 205 at Silas School. He was the principal for Henderson Grove School and also Allen Park School. In June 1968 he was the assistant principal for Lombard Junior High School. He then became the assistant principal for Turner Junior High School in Jacksonville, IL in 1972. He retired in 1985. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1943. He received a BA degree from Knox College in 1949. He received a Masters Degree from the College of Peugot Sound in Tacoma in 1957. He was a member of the American Legion Post #441 in Bluffs, IL. He was an avid collector of trains and recently donated all his trains to the Railroad Museum.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 PM Tuesday August 29, 2006 in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. The Deacon Jim Haneghan will officiate. Mr. Harold (Ike) Thompson, Abingdon Chapel

69 of 505 Sunset Court, Abingdon, IL died at 2:02 am Friday, August 25, 2006 at his home.
He was born February 1, 1937, the 8th of twelve children born to John and Alice Sprague Thompson. He married Gloria Phillips on July 29, 1963 in Bedford, Iowa. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Jerry Thompson of Bussey, IA; three daughters, Natasha Thompson of Chandler, AZ, Linda Morgan of Zebulon, GA and Tondi (and Bill) Hunter of Smithshire, IL; two brothers, Luther “Bud” Thompson of Des Moines, IA and Kenneth “Jug” (and Fran) Thompson of Omaha, NE; two sisters, Pat Wiand of Ralston, NE and Connie (and Dennis) Travis of Dennison, IA; five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and five brothers.
He worked as a conductor for BNSF Railroad for 30 years retiring on February 1, 1999.
He had lived in Corning, IA, Afton, IA, and Ottumwa, IA for 20 years and in Abingdon, IL since 1985.
He served in the US Army for three years and was stationed in Germany.
His enjoyed watching all sports, especially football, history, reading, camping in his motor home and attending country music concerts.
Cremation will be accorded. A memorial visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Monday, August 28, 2006 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel, 206 N. Washington St. Abingdon, IL. with a flag presentation at 8:00 pm by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381.

Mr. Kenneth C. Surface, Galesburg Chapel

69, 542 310th St., North Henderson, IL, died at 11:02 AM Tuesday, August 22, 2006 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born December 26, 1936 in Dixon, Nebraska, the son of Clyde and Irene Peterson Surface. He married Karen Peterson in 1963 in Moline, IL. He later married Georgia Snell on July 1, 2000 in North Henderson. She survives.
Also surviving is a son, Lance K. (and Audrey) Surface, Galesburg, a daughter, Kay (and Charles) Demmer, Denver, CO, a step son, Stuart Olmsted, Maquon, IL, 2 step daughters, Lori (and Richard) Van Winkle, Maquon and Kathy (and David) Santamaria, Galesburg, 2 brothers, Robert Surface, Crystal Falls, MI and Paul Surface, New Jersey, 2 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, and 4 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a step daughter, Karen Cisco in 2002 and a brother.
He worked for the Keebler Company for 25 years. He then was a truck driver for Maytag Corporation through the RUAN Trucking Company for 12 years. He retired in 2001. He graduated from high school in Omaha, Nebraska and attended college.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Galesburg, where he was the head greeter and a member of the choir who sang solos. He was a former member of Teamster’s Union Local #627. He served in the United States Army from 1961-1963.

Mrs. Rita C. Fengel Reed, Abingdon Chapel

94 a resident of Seminary Manor, Galesburg formerly of Abingdon died at 2:30 am Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Seminary Manor.
She was born on January 14, 1912 in London Mills to Asa W. and Myrtle B. Swigart Hummel. She married Everett Fengel. He preceded her in death in 1948. She later married William D. Reed on September 25, 1953 in Abingdon. He preceded her in death on November 11, 1993.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Surviving are one son, Doc (and Loretta) Fengel of Abingdon; one daughter, Mera (and Kenneth) Norville of Galesburg; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
She graduated from Abingdon High School in 1930. She had lived in Abingdon most of her life and later in Galesburg for ten years prior to her residing at Seminary Manor.
She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She also enjoyed flower gardening.
Graveside service will be at 11:00 am Saturday, August 26, 2006 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 until 10:45 am Saturday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.

Mrs. Laura Irene Spinks, Galesburg Chapel

83, 789 S. West St., Galesburg, IL, departed this life at 10:45 PM August 18, 2006 at Proctor Hospital, Peoria, IL.
Laura was born November 29, 1922 to the union of Robert and Lucinda (Crowder) Blalork. She was the 13th child of 14 children.
She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age. She was baptized and was a member of Green Grove Baptist Church. She was educated in the Hardman County Public Schools.
On December 14, 1940, she was joined in holy matrimony to the late A.C. (Pops) Spinks. To that union there were 15 children, 7 boys and 8 girls. She was a wonderful mother, who worked hard caring for her children.
She lived in Bolivar, TN until the age of 23. She moved to East St. Louis, IL in 1945 and lived there until 1951. She then moved to Galesburg, where she remained until her death. She was employed as a private duty maid, at the New Arlington Hotel, the former Galesburg State Research Hospital, and also at Green Thumb. She was the mother of the late Rev. Calvin Spinks and helped to follow his vision and was co-founder of the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Galesburg.
She leaves to cherish her memories eleven children, 3 sons, E. Lester (Rose) Spinks and Curtis (Wanda) Spinks, both of Galesburg and Heston Spinks of Peoria, 8 daughters, Mattie J. Mixon, Emma G. Jackson Sargent and Tuesday R. Spinks, all of Galesburg, Estherline (Grant) Duncan of Peoria, LouAnnette (Henery) Mayberry of Bloomington, IL, Cynthia R. (Dean) Morrison of St. Paul, MN, and Doreen Cherry and Theresa S. Spinks, both of Florissant, MO, and one sister-in-law, Georgia Justice of Bolivar. She has numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, they number in the hundreds. She was preceded in death by her loving husband A.C. (Pops) Spinks, 4 sons, Rev. Calvin O. Spinks, A.C. Spinks, Jr., Corina J. (Connie, Bitsy) Spinks, and Robert L. Spinks, 2 sons-in-law, Lester W.T. Mixon and Robert L. Jackson, 3 grandchildren, Keith A. Mixon, Madilyn I. Jackson, and A.C. Spinks III, and 2 great grandchildren, Darryl D. Galmore, Jr. and Reign Mayberry.
Funeral services will be 1 PM Friday August 25, 2006 at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Yvette Mixon officiating. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5-8 PM at Lighthouse Baptist Church. Mrs. Alice P. (Polly) Firof, Galesburg Chapel

79, of 523 N. Prairie St., Galesburg, IL died at 4:30 AM Sunday August 20, 2006 at her home.
She was born June 23, 1927 in Galesburg, the daughter of Glen William and Josephine Myrta Anderson Sholl. She married Forrest Powell in Knoxville, IL on August 3, 1946. She later married Tom Firof in Galesburg on July 3, 1965. He preceded her in death on July 29, 2006.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Jane (husband Steven) Shumaker of Glendale, AZ and Linda Ann Haffner of Emden, IL, one step daughter, Vicki (husband Ned) Shane of Galesburg, one step son, Dale (wife Susan) Firof of Macomb, IL, ten grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
She worked as an inspector for the former Admiral/Maytag Corporation, retiring in 1966. She lived in Galesburg her entire life. She graduated from Galesburg High school in 1945. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She was a member of the Lake Bracken Country Club. She enjoyed playing bridge and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Every year around the holidays people enjoyed her homemade candies.

Mrs. Betty J. Frank, Galesburg Chapel

77, of 1072 Olive St., Galesburg, IL died at 4:25 PM Saturday, August 19, 2006 at her home. She was born November 13, 1928 in Ipava, IL to Ralph and Bessie Shawgo Groff. She married Walter J. Frank in Ipava on March 25, 1950. He preceded her in death on December 14, 1977.
She is survived by six children; Sheryl (and Gary) Icenogle of Galesburg, Vickie (and Jerry) Frost of Rockwood, TN, Barb (and Tony) Perez, Jr. of Galesburg, Gary (and Pam) Frank of Galesburg, Kim (and Milo) Morrow of Galesburg and Toni (and Randy) Yount of Liberal Mo; a sister, Vilda Berry of Columbus, OH; 21 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a son, Walter “Sonny” Frank on October 13, 2002; three brothers, Maurice Groff, Herman Groff and Melvin Groff and a sister, Zelma Maxine Ames.
She was a mental health technician at the former Galesburg Mental Health Center from 1965 until its closure in 1988. Se was a member of AFSCME Local 1274 and the Liberal United Methodist Church. She enjoyed attending the retiree dinners and meeting with old friends. She volunteered with a Lamar MO senior center and with a hospice organization.
She loved spending summers camping with family at the Lake Storey Campgrounds and taking trips to different parts of the country with her adult children. She best loved being a Grandma where each new grandchild brought as much excitement and pride as the one before.
Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at the East Linwood Cemetery in Galesburg with Rev. Ted Gillum officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM top 8:00 PM Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Mr. Leaon R. Morss, Abingdon Chapel

89 a resident of the Care Center of Abingdon, died at 11:57 am Sunday, August 20, 2006 at the Care Center.
He was born on July 20, 1917 in Persifer Township, Knox County, IL to Ray and Madge Reynolds Morss. He married P. Elaine Donaldson on November 1, 1943 in West Palm Beach, FL. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Tom (and Jessie) Morss of Peoria; one granddaughter, Gina (and Bill) Fischer of West Peoria and two great grandchildren, Noah and Kylie Fischer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather Forrest Wills, a daughter, Connie Rae Morss and one brother, Eugene Morss.
He graduated from Gilson High School in 1936.
He served in the Army from 1943 until 1946 and was a surgical technician at the 166th General Hospital in Le Mans, France during WW II.
He worked as a caster at the former Abingdon Pottery for over 35 years, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
He enjoyed dancing and listening to big bands. He also loved harness racing and attending the many local, county and state fairs.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, August, 23, 2006 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Eleanor Landon and Rev. M. Annette Faull will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery where Military Rites will be conducted by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 pm Tuesday at the chapel.
