Mr. Robert (Bob) Ross, Galesburg Chapel

91, 420 Marston Ave., Galesburg, died at 9:10 PM Saturday, August 19, 2006 in The Laurels, Highland Creek, NC.
He was born January 6, 1915 in Abingdon, IL, the son of Claude and Mayme Dawdy Ross. He married Lucille Caulkins on September 5, 1937 in West Burlington, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 2000.
He is survived by a daughter, Carole (and Terry) Ross John, Charlotte, NC, a sister, Virgie Hovell, Tupelo, MS, 2 grandchildren, Douglas John and Donna John Reynolds, and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister.
He was an engineer for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 35 years, retiring in 1979. He had lived in Abingdon, Burlington, Iowa, and in Galesburg since 1953. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1933. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Abingdon. He was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross for 18 years.
Cremation was accorded. Memorial services will be 11 AM Saturday, September 30, 2006 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Raymond McLaren will officiate. Visitation will be 10 to 11 AM Saturday at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Mrs. Maxine Elnor Clifford Davis, Abingdon Chapel

77 of 304 S. Jefferson St died at 4:23 pm Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at her home.
She was born on April 13, 1929 in Cuba, IL to Elmer L. and Gladys Porter Clifford. She married Martin E. Davis in 1951 in Jerseyville, IL. They were divorced.
Surviving are two sisters, Bertha Kilburn and Louise Whitenack both of Abingdon; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Frances Schisler.
She grew up in the Avon area and graduated from Avon High School in 1947. She later lived in Knoxville prior to moving to Abingdon.
She worked as a seamstress at the Carhartt Galesburg Plant retiring in 1989.
Graveside service will be at 11:00 am Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rex Kilburn, her nephew, will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements

Mrs. Shirley King, Galesburg Chapel

81, 1698 Maple Ave., Galesburg, IL, died at 5:30 AM Tuesday, September 26, 2006 in Rosewood Care Center.
She was born November 7, 1924 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Frederick Fay and Irene Tomlinson James. She married William E. “Bill” King on June 24, 1950 in Libertyville, IL. He preceded her in death on March 25, 1998.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Cheryl A. (and Doug) Gherna, Urbana, IL and Linda K. (and Richard) Dugan, Woodbury, MN, a brother, C. David James, Rossville, IL, and 3 grandchildren, James D. Gherna, Urbana and Mark and Kelsey Dugan, Woodbury.
She graduated from University High School in Normal, IL in 1942, Lake Forest College with a BS in Chemistry in 1949 and from Carl Sandburg College Nursing Program in 1980. She was a hospital biochemist in the 1940’s and 1950’s. She then was a registered nurse, working at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.
Funeral will be 2 PM Friday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Marilyn Anell will officiate. Visitation will be 1 to 2 PM Friday at the chapel. Mr. Crispin D. Hernandez, Galesburg Chapel

61, 367 W. Second St., Galesburg, IL, died at 5:27 PM Monday, September 25, 2006 in Methodist Medical Center, Peoria, IL.
He was born October 25, 1944 in Wild Horse, TX, the son of Secundino and Conception Martinez Hernandez. He married Marjorie Roark-Swedeen on September 2, 1987 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving are 4 sons, Donald D. (and Sherrill) Hart, Boiling Springs, SC, Daniel W. Hart, Galesburg, Robert D. (and Lori) Swedeen, Alliance, Neb., and Jason J. Swedeen, Orlando, FL, 2 daughters, Cris Ann Garza, Sterling, IL and Merijo (and Eric) Wolfe, Galesburg, a brother, Jose (and Ophia) Zalazar, Rock Falls, IL, 6 sisters, Jesse Miniel, Gloria Hernandez, Josie Hernandez, and Mary (and David) Ortez, all of Sterling, Carmen Cantu, Rock Falls, and Alice (and Clyde) Tipton in Tennessee, and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
He was a laborer at the former Butler Manufacturing Company in Galesburg for 29 years. He retired March 5, 2005. He had lived in Galesburg since 1976. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sterling and attended school there. He was a member of the United Steel Workers. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed horseshoeing and gardening, and was a devoted grandfather.
Funeral will be 10 AM Friday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Ernest Pizzamiglio will officiate. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 PM Thursday at the chapel. Mr. James R. (Dick) Wagher, Galesburg Chapel

85 of 2345 N. Seminary St., formerly of 739 N. Farnham St., Galesburg died at 11:56 PM Tuesday September 26, 2006 in Seminary Manor Nursing Home.
He was born June 7, 1921 in Victoria, IL the son of James L. and Florence Williams Wagher. He married Julia Hackett on October 25, 1946 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on December 22, 1990.
He is survived by one son, Gary (wife Penny) Wagher of Galesburg, one daughter, Glenda (husband Fritz) Menke of Kettering, OH, one brother, Howard (wife Mary) Wagher of Bakersfield, CA, five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
He served in the US Army Air Corps.
He worked as a carman for the CB & Q and Burlington Northern Railroads for 44 years. He had lived in Galesburg since 1949. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1939. He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
Graveside services will be 12:30 PM Friday September 29, 2006 in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with presentation of the flag by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. The Rev. Mrs. Millie Ann (Asbury) Hasselbacher, Galesburg Chapel

42 of 1951 Washington St., Galesburg, IL died at 12:01 PM Sunday September 24, 2006 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, IL.
She was born January 7, 1964 in Galesburg, the daughter of Thomas and Marjorie Jane Bailey Asbury. She married Thomas Hasselbacher in Monmouth, IL on May 2, 2004. He survives.
Also surviving is her father, Thomas Asbury of Galesburg, four daughters, Jennifer (husband Jared) Chandler, Amber Asbury, Heather Sargeant and Laci Sargeant, all of Galesburg, two step sons, Rick Sargeant of Galesburg and Jeremy Hasselbacher of Princeville, IL, one step daughter, Diana Jenkins of Galesburg, one brother, Terry Asbury of California, several half brothers and half sisters and a special friend, Dolly Sprinkle of Galesburg, and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and her grandparents, Ira and Millie Asbury, whom raised her.
She worked for Caterpillar in Mossville, IL, Maytag, Hy-Vee Gas Station. She graduated from Williamsfield High School and attended Carl Sandburg College. She was a member of the I.A.M.A. with Maytag and U.A.W. with Caterpillar.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 AM Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. John Carlson will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6-8 PM at the chapel. Mr. David A. Huffman, Galesburg Chapel

67 of 1034 W. Grove St., Galesburg, IL died at 1 AM Monday September 25, 2006 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born June 11, 1939 in Galesburg, the son of Melvin and Isabel Akers Huffman. He married Marian Webber on April 4, 1959 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Brian (wife Angela) Huffman and Scott Huffman, both of Galesburg, two daughters, Shanna (husband Bryan) Syron of Galesburg and Shelby (husband Fred) Isabell of Farmington, IL one brother, Larry (wife Joyce) Huffman of West Bend, WI, one sister, Patricia (husband Charles) Erickson of Forest Lake, MN, five grandsons, two step grandsons, and two step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He worked as a lead man in plastics for Maytag for over 41 years. He also worked as a laborer at Dick Blick for a year. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1957. He lived all his life in Galesburg. He umpired baseball for 24 years, including Babe Ruth League, Little League, American Legion League, and high school and college leagues. He coached JFL Football League, Little League, and basketball at the YMCA. He was a member of the Illinois High School Association. He was a member and the union steward of the Local Union IAMAW #2063. He and his wife were involved in collecting and selling antiques and attending antique shows. He was an avid collector of antique mousetraps and spoke to groups about them. He was an avid fisherman and mushroom hunter.
He attended East Main Congregational United Church of Christ.
Graveside services are scheduled for 1:30 PM Thursday September 28, 2006 in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Robin Faull will officiate. Mr. Donald F. LeGrand, Galesburg Chapel

77, of Mesa, AZ formerly of Rio, IL, died at 7:05 PM June 15, 2006 in Phoenix, AZ. He was born on September 26, 1928 in Fremont, Nebraska to Floyd and Mardell Linn LeGrand. He married Donna Johnson and then married Sandra Sue Wyatt.
He is survived by two sons, Cory F. (and Debbie) LeGrand of Monticello, IL and Ronald L. (and Debbie) LeGrand of Mesa, AZ; two daughters, Jana L. Straw and Kimberly G. LeGrand, both of Galesburg, IL; a brother, Kenneth L. (and Gayle) LeGrand of Sun City West, AZ; 4 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren.
He worked at Flintco in Tulsa, OK and Denver, CO, at LeGrand Service Station, then at Tristates Oil, all in Galesburg. He retired as the Building Trades Instructor at Galesburg High School.
He was a 1946 graduate of Galesburg High School and attended Knox College. He was a member of the Home Builders Association and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed woodworking and hunting.
He served in the US Marines during World War II in the Mediterranean Ocean.
Graveside memorial services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Tom Larsen officiating. Military rites will be accorded by Ralph M. Dr. Maurice A. (Moe) Claman, Galesburg Chapel

died at 5:30 PM Thursday, September 21, 2006 in Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, IL at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marian, and four children, Cassandra Claman (and Ray Lee), Springfield, David Claman, Missoula, MT, Michele (and Michael) Garza, San Francisco, CA, and Joshua (and Jacki) Claman, London, England, as well as a brother, Stephen (and Renee) Claman, Beverly Hills, CA. He leaves seven grandchildren, Hannah and Alexander Weaver, Sela and Celio Garza, and Lachlan, Ellie, and Leah Claman.
Dr. Claman, a general and thoracic surgeon, born in Los Angeles, CA, practiced in Galesburg from 1960 until his retirement in 1990. Since then, he and his wife have divided their time between Galesburg and Naples, FL.
He was a graduate of Tulane University School of Medicine, Class of 1949. At various times, he served as chief of staff of St. Mary’s and Cottage hospitals, as chief of surgery in each hospital, and as president of the Knox County Medical Society. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and of the American Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and is a lifetime member of the board of Galesburg Cottage Hospital. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
He served on the boards of the Galesburg Civic Art Center, the Knox-Galesburg Symphony and Soangetaha Country Club. For many years he was a volunteer docent at the Nature Conservancy of Southwest Florida. He was a member of the Exchange Club and for many years was the medical director of the Knox County Red Cross Blood Bank. He was, for a period of time, a guest columnist for the Galesburg Register Mail.
He shared with his wife a number of interests which brought variety and texture into their lives. Some of these were foreign travel, theatre, music, art, and reading. They led an active life which included, with varying degrees of skill, golf, tennis, bicycle touring, and skiing.
He served in the United States military during the Korean Conflict.
Cremation has been accorded. Visitation will be 4 to 6 PM Tuesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. A private family memorial service will follow at the chapel. Mrs. M. Luella Huff, Galesburg Chapel

80, 2187 Sodhi Ave., Galesburg, IL, died at 4:08 PM Wednesday, September 20, 2006 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born April 22, 1926 in Galesburg, the daughter of James and Julia Kenney Wiles. She married Arlett E. Huff on January 26, 1947 in Oneida, IL. He preceded her in death on April 26, 2004.
She is survived by 2 sons, LeRoy (and Sue) Huff, Petersburg, IL and John (and Jean) Huff, Galesburg, a daughter, Julie (and Russ) Carlson, Kirkwood, IL, 6 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
She worked in food service at Knox College and the former Downtown Lounge and then worked in housekeeping at Galesburg Cottage Hospital and at the former Sheridan Inn, all in Galesburg. She retired in 1985. She attended Oneida schools. She had lived in Oneida, Kirkwood, and Galesburg. She attended Countryside Bible Church in Monmouth, IL. She loved listening to country music, dancing, bowling, watching Cubs baseball and spending time with her friends at Gordon Behrents Senior Center.
