Mrs. Charlotte E. Rylander, Galesburg Chapel

78, 614 E. Berrien St., Galesburg, died at 1:35 AM Friday, February 23, 2007 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
She was born July 5, 1928 in Prescott, Iowa, the daughter of William D. and Addie Ingram Williams. She married David F. Simpson. She later married Floyd Keith “Skeeter” Rylander. They preceded her in death.
She is survived by a son, Roger (and Luellen Brackens) Simpson, Galesburg, a sister, Maxine Rozewicz, Detroit, MI, 3 granddaughters, Kimberly A. Pearce, Sherry L. Kitch, and Pamela L. Riggs, and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James D. “Jim” Simpson in 1990, a daughter, Sharon Kay Simpson, and 2 brothers.
She worked at Creston General Hospital in Creston, Iowa for 2 years and then was an aide at the former Galesburg Research Hospital for 9 years. She then worked on the line at the former Admiral/Maytag Corporation in Galesburg for 28 years, until her retirement.
She was raised in Iowa and had lived in Galesburg for over 50 years. She was of Methodist faith. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Knox County Sheriff’s Association, and the Illinois Sheriff’s Association. She was an election judge for many years.
Funeral will be 10 AM Wednesday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Steve Hartman will officiate. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 PM Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the family. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.

Mr. Calvin L. (Cork) Smith, Galesburg Chapel

75, of Galesburg died at home.
He was born June 25, 1931 in Galesburg. He is survived by two children, Kay and David and family. He married Janis Swigert Jamison. She survives along with two step children, Kelly and Dale and family. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother. Also surviving is a special pet, Sunee.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1949. He served four good years in the U.S. Navy, 1949 to 1953. He worked as a barber for 34 years and as a welder at Butler Manufacturing Company for 22 years.
Cremation was accorded. Graveside service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday February 28, 2007 at Memorial Park Cemetery in Galesburg. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Prairieland Animal Welfare Center or Kids Center (formerly Knox County Day Nursery.) “Farewell and Thank You”.

Mr. Earl L. Ross, Sr., Galesburg Chapel

85, Costello Terrace, 200 E. Harlem St., Monmouth, IL, died at 6 AM Sunday, February 25, 2007 in Community Care of Monmouth.
He was born June 4, 1921 in Roseville, IL, the son of William and Jessie June Ray Ross. He married Geraldine L. Smith on August 1, 1942 in Palmyra, MO. She survives.
Also surviving are 5 sons, Danny Ross, Terry Ross, Gary (and Debbie) Ross, and Michael (and Jody) Ross, all of Monmouth, and Russell (and Teresa) Ross, Coralville, WA, 3 daughters, Rose (and Kendall) Tippett, Martha (and Jerry) Brock, and Mary (and Clayton) Dean, all of Monmouth, a sister, Eva McCullough, Monmouth, 21 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Earl, Jr. and Ronnie, an infant daughter, Joanne, a grandson, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters.
He worked for Galesburg Tire and Vulcanizing and later was employed by the City of Monmouth. He enjoyed camping and fishing at Young’s Lake, being outdoors, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Cremation will be accorded. The family will receive friends from 11 AM to 2 PM Wednesday at a luncheon at the Costello Terrace Community Room. Burial will be later in Asbury Cemetery, Roseville, IL. Mr. W. Douglas Tracy, Galesburg Chapel

87, 370 Justin Drive, Galesburg, died at 4 PM Wednesday, February 21, 2007 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born January 5, 1920 in Galesburg, the son of Floyd M. and Ruth Brewer Tracy. He married Irene Irwin on March 23, 1941 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on June 18, 1972. He then married Nellie McLaughlin Meiers on April 28, 1973 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on September 8, 2003.
He is survived by a son, William (and Diana) Tracy, Galesburg, a daughter, Susan Van Kirk, Monmouth, 2 step sons, William Meiers, Westminster, CO and Johnie (and Mary) Meiers, Ipsilantic, MI, 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Martha Dunn and Virginia Caleca, both of Galesburg, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Steven on September 3, 2003.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1937. He attended Brown’s Business College and worked at the Santa Fe Stock Yards. He served in the United States Army during WWII in Germany. He returned home after the war and managed the Galesburg Drive-In Theatre, built by his uncle, Ansley Tracy. In 1950, he started his own business, the Doug Tracy Tax Service. He retired in 2005. He also was the comptroller for the Lawrence D. Johnson Insurance Agency in the Fidelity Federal Building for many years.
He was one of the oldest members of First Presbyterian Church and had served on all of its boards. He was a long standing member, as well as, past president and treasurer of the Galesburg Exchange Club. He was an avid golfer, bridge player, and was a Chicago White Sox fan for 80 years.

Mrs. Elizabeth I. (Sally) LaGrow, Galesburg Chapel

92, 2345 N. Seminary St., formerly of 742 Lawrence Ave., Galesburg, IL died at 9:46 AM Friday February 23, 2007 in Seminary Manor Nursing Home.
She was born August 14, 1914 in Peabody, KS the daughter of William Edwin and Jennie Hall Jarvis. She married Richard LaGrow on June 7, 1950. He died May 18, 2004.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and two sisters.
She worked as a registered nurse for 35 years. She worked for several local physicians, including Dr. Erffmeyer. She graduated from high school in Peabody, KS. She graduated from Halsted Hospital School of Nursing in Halsted, KS. She was of the Baptist faith.
Graveside services are schedule for 1:30 PM Monday in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. John Carlson will officiate. There will be no visitation. Mr. Donavan Nelson Foutch, Abingdon Chapel

77 of Wataga and formerly of Abingdon, died at 8:15 am Monday, February 19, 2007 at his home.
He was born on August 10, 1929 in Dalton, Nebraska to Harley and Cordia M. Servis Foutch. He married Lillie Eileen Schisler on May 25, 1949 in Abingdon. She preceded him in death on February 7, 1979. He later married Patricia Joan Atwell Hall on August 10, 1987 in Abingdon. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Dwight (and Pam) Foutch of Abingdon; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four step children, Michael (and Danielle) Hall of Abingdon, John (and Deb) Hall, Sr. of Ottumwa, IA, Susan Johnson of Monmouth and Lynn Hall of Galesburg; ten step grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren; one brother, Lugene (and Nancy) Foutch of Abingdon and nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Frances Eileen Koller Hanna, a brother, Van Dorous Foutch and an infant sister, Frances Foutch.
He moved with his family from Nebraska to Vermont, IL in 1930 where he grew up and attended grade school. He moved to Abingdon in 1940 where he attended Abingdon High School.
He served in the US Navy from April 5, 1948 until January 30, 1950.
He was employed at the CB & Q Railroad and later the Burlington Northern Railroad as a bridge and building carpenter from October 13, 1947 until retiring on June 4, 1984.
He was a former member of the First Assembly of God Church in Abingdon and currently attended the Wataga Congregational Church.
Cremation will be accorded. Graveside service will be at 1:00 pm Saturday, February 24, 2007 at the Vermont Cemetery in Vermont, IL. Rev. David Kramer will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dale Harrison Rowe, Galesburg Chapel

95, 2345 N. Seminary St., Galesburg, died at 7:53 PM Monday, February 19, 2007 in Seminary Manor.
He was born October 22, 1911 in Galesburg, the son of Alvin Van and Lois Harrison Rowe. He married Frances C. Hazen on October 23, 1937 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on November 19, 2006.
He is survived by 2 sons, Bruce Hazen (and Margot) Rowe, Loveland, OH and Howard Alan (and Judy) Rowe, Mt. Zion, IL, 4 grandchildren, Brian V. Rowe, Joy R. Blang, David H. Rowe, and Michael P. Rowe, and 2 great grandchildren, John Rowe Blang and Caroline Frances Blang. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean M. Brown.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1930 and from Knox College in 1934. He did post graduate work at Northwestern University in Evanston in 1935. He returned to Galesburg and was associated with his father in the operation of Rowe Manufacturing Company. He retired as president October 1, 1973 and from the company on October 1, 1976.
He was a member of the Knox 50 year club and remained an enthusiastic supporter of the college throughout his life. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Knox, the Galesburg Rotary Club, and Soangetaha Country Club. He served for 35 years as a director of the First Galesburg National Bank and Trust Company and was an alumni trustee of Knox College. He had served as a director of the Galesburg Chamber of Commerce, Illinois State Chamber of Commerce, and was the first president of the Areawide Advisory Board of St. Mary Medical Center. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and deacon.
Dale and his wife were adventurous travelers. Together, they explored many distant lands. During his lifetime, Dale explored the ruins of Machu Pichu, Peru, viewed the Great Wall of China, and saw the Northern Lights from above the Arctic Circle.
Private family graveside services will be Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. David Parker will officiate. Mr. Roland Roy Nagle, Galesburg Chapel

58, 1408 N. Cedar St., Galesburg, died at 8:30 AM Tuesday, February 20, 2007 in Trinity Medical Center West, Rock Island, IL.
He was born May 4, 1948 in Rock Island, IL, the son of Charles Albertus and Pansy Ruth Jones Nagle. He married Linda L. Anderson on February 22, 1969 in Cambridge, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are 2 brothers, Ralph J. (and Mariellen) Nagle, Ashland, WI and Charles L. (and Norma) Nagle, Silvis, IL, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister.
He worked in the warehouse at the former Maytag Corporation in Galesburg for 30 years. He retired in 2000.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg, Alpha Masonic Lodge #155 in Galesburg, the Moline Consistory, and the American Legion. He was involved with the Boy Scouts and played Santa Claus for different organizations, businesses, and in people’s homes. He lived in Rock Island before moving to Galesburg in 1969.
He served in the United States Navy for 2 years.
Funeral will be 11 AM Saturday in the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Scott Grulke will officiate. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 PM Friday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Mr. Tom Durkin, Abingdon Chapel

31 of 601 N. Austin Ave. died at 1:40 pm Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at home.
He was born on January 22, 1976 in Galesburg to Michael and Joyce Dixon Durkin. He married Devon Philbee in June of 2000 in Abingdon.
He is survived by his mother, Joyce Durkin of Abingdon, his father, Michael Durkin of Nebraska City, NE; a son, Bryce Philbee of Galesburg; a daughter, Kyra Durkin of Galesburg; a brother, Jon Durkin of Galesburg; a sister, Marie (and John) Kness of Oneida; 6 nieces and nephews and an uncle, Jerry Dixon of Abingdon.
He had lived in Abingdon all his life. He graduated from Abingdon High School. He was in Cub Scouts growing up.
He worked at Midstate Manufacturing in Galesburg the past year.
He loved spending time with his children, Bryce and Kyra, his family and friends. He loved to participate in Mud Drags and putting model cars together.
Visitation will be from 9:00 until 10:00 am Saturday, February 24, 2007 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel followed by a prayer service with Eleanor Landon officiating. Cremation will follow the services. Private burial of the cremains will be at a later date. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Church of God of Prophecy Fellowship Center in Abingdon following the services.

Mr. Robert P. Cassens, Galesburg Chapel

82, 677 Brown Ave., Galesburg, died at 7:49 PM Monday, February 19, 2007 in the emergency room of Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born October 11, 1924 in Sterling, IL, the son of Bernard and Nina Waller Cassens. He married Marie E. Thompson on December 15, 1946 in Prophetstown, IL. She preceded him in death on March 18, 1998.
He is survived by a special friend, Betty Ford, with whom he lived, a son, Scott P. (and Debra) Cassens, East Galesburg, a daughter, Linda K. Jones, Spring Valley, WI, 2 grandchildren, Matthew Jones, Durango, CO and Christopher Jones, Seattle, WA, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Cassens Haraldson in 1976 and a sister.
He was employed by Galesburg Sheet Metal for over 20 years. He then was a real estate appraiser for 10 years. He later was a salesman for Bruce Lauerman Heating and Cooling, retiring in 1988. In 1990, he moved to Prescott, WI, where he drove a school bus. He returned to Galesburg in 1998 and drove a bus for the City of Galesburg part time until 2002.
He lived in Rock Island as a child and graduated from Rock Island High School. He attended Augustana College and Morningside College.
He was a 50 year member of Alpha Masonic Lodge #155, where he was a 32nd degree mason. He was a member of VFW Post 2257, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Experimental Aircraft Association, and the Stearman Restorer’s Association. He was the past patron of the Colona Chapter OES and was a former member of the Galesburg Lions Club and Lake Bracken Country Club.
He served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. He was stationed in Europe as a B-17 Bomber Pilot. He was a recipient of two Purple Heart Medals. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Funeral will be 10 AM Friday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Bruce King will officiate. Visitation will be 6 to 8 PM Thursday at the chapel.
