Mr. Charles E. Taylor, Galesburg Chapel

69, of 1145 Frank St., Galesburg IL died at 9:10 AM Friday, March 23, 2007 at Galesburg Terrace.
He was born on May 26, 1937 in Terre Haute, IN to Lloyd H. and Frances Crothers Taylor.
He is survived by three sons, Mark Taylor of Kewanee, IL, John Taylor of Cincinnati, OH and Broderick Baldwin of Chicago, IL; a step son, Joe Smith, Galesburg; four daughters, Michelle (and Fred) Watson of Peoria, IL, Susan (and Mike) Wilson of Louisville, KY, Tiffany Moore of Houston, TX and Joanne Christian of Cincinnati; two step daughters, Joyce Wilson and Annette Ryner, both of Galesburg; four brothers, Richard (and Sandra) Taylor of Queen Creek, AZ, Greg Taylor of Kewanee, Lloyd (and Cindy) Taylor and Dewey (and Elizabeth) Taylor, both of Galesburg; four sisters, Freedonia Ewing of Lincoln, NE, Ella (and Rev. Harold) Boyd of Macomb, IL, Marietta (and James) Jackson of Kewanee and Beatrice (and Ray) Peoples of Galesburg; 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and a great grandchild.
He was a brakeman for Burlington Northern Railroad for 10 years and a welder for Bixby-Zimmer of 20 years, retiring in 1997. He was a 1955 graduate of Galesburg High School. He was a member of the Israel of God’s Church W.H.A.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday, March 31, 2007 at the Israel of God’s Church W.H.A. with Bishop Ronald Henton and Rev. Harold L. Boyd officiating. Visitation will be from Noon to 1:00 PM at the Church. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to the Israel of God’s Church W.H.A. or the American Cancer Society. Mr. Charles A. Baker, Galesburg Chapel

80, 2711 Lincoln Park Drive, Galesburg, died at 2:35 PM Wednesday, March 28, 2007 in Marigold Health Care Center.
He was born January 22, 1927 in Lancaster, KY the son of Charles A. and Amanda Lee Baker. He married Joan Philips on December 21, 1957 in Galesburg. She survives.
He is also survived by 4 sons, Richard (and Vickie) Baker, Pueblo West, CO, Steve (and Sue) Baker and Stephen Baker, both of Galesburg, and Michael (and Dawn) Baker, Morris, IL, a daughter, Bonita Swanson, Galesburg, 17 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.
He was a machinist at the former Butler Manufacturing Company in Galesburg for 45 years. He retired in 1989. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1944. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
He served in the United States Army during WWII from 1944 to 1946. He was reactivated from 1951 to 1952 during the Korean Conflict.
Funeral will be 11:30 AM Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Marilyn Anell will officiate. Military rites will be provided by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Mrs. Phyllis Carol Boergadine, Galesburg Chapel

67 of 1403 N. Prairie St., Galesburg died at 9:55 AM Wednesday March 28, 2007 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
She was born September 20, 1939 in Galesburg the daughter of Guy E. and Onalee Nellie Hart Coffey.
She is survived by two brothers, Dale (and Mary) Coffey of Wheaton, IL and Robert (and Melba) Coffey of Knoxville, IL, two sisters, Joan Houghton of Galesburg and Judy A. (and Richard) Beacom of Kingman, AZ, five nephews, three nieces, and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She was the Director of Volunteer Services at OSF St. Mary Medical Center for 41 years, retiring in November of 2002. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1957. She was baptized of the Catholic faith. She was a member of the St. Mary Medical Center Auxiliary.
Private family service will be Friday March 30, 2007. The Rev. Doug Johnson will officiate. A Celebration of Life will be from 2-4 PM Friday March 30, 2007 in the OSF St. Mary Medial Center Cafeteria. Cremation will be accorded. Mr. Phillip Louis Gustafson, Galesburg Chapel

57, 305 Buhron St., Laurel, Iowa, formerly of Galesburg, died at 11:19 AM Monday, March 26, 2007 in Marshalltown Medical Center, Marshalltown, Iowa.
He was born December 7, 1949 in Galesburg, the son of Phillip H. and Shirley Sandeen Gustafson. He married Patricia Greve in Northwood, Iowa.
He is survived by his mother, Shirley Gustafson, Galesburg, a son, Christian E.L. Gustafson, Peoria, IL, a special friend with whom he lived, Barbara Huffaker, 2 sisters, Janet (and Bill) Rucks, Mt. Pulaski, IL and Jane (and Jim) Mudd, Galesburg, an uncle, Stanley Gustafson, Galesburg, 1 nephew, Joey Mudd, Galesburg, a niece, Kristin Rucks, Mt. Pulaski, and 2 dogs, Emily, a German Short Hair Pointer and Peggy, a Rat Terrier. He was preceded in death by his father and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1968, where he was on the All State Football Team and also won 2nd place in the IHSA State Wrestling Meet. He attended the University of Notre Dame and also Kearney State University in Kearney, NE. While at the University of Notre Dame, he was named National Catholic Heavyweight Champion in 1970 and also played football under Coach Ara Parseghian with quarterback Joe Theisman. At Kearney State University, he was on the All-American NAIA team with Walter Payton.
Service will be 1:30 PM Thursday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Tom Larsen will officiate. Visitation will be 12:30 to 1:30 PM Thursday at the chapel. Mrs. Jane A. (Malone) Butler, Abingdon Chapel

55 of 279 Michigan Ave., Apt. 712 died at 12:45 pm Saturday, March 24, 2007 at her home.
She was born on July 20, 1951 in Galesburg to Elbea C. and P. Joanne Combs Malone. She married Michael Butler on July 21, 1968.
Jane was a caring and loving mother to her three children, Brad (and Traci) Butler of Washington, Shelly (and Todd) Rhinehart of Maquon and Emily (and Keith) Nyman of Galesburg. She adored her six grandchildren and spoiled them at every opportunity. They include Corey Shultz, Lora Shultz, Dalton Parrish, Brooklynn Rhinehart, Brevin Butler and Trenton Butler. Jane also cherished the time spent with her immediate family, all of whom survive; her mother, Joanne Malone of Abingdon; her brother, Ed (and Karita) Malone of Abingdon; three sisters, Judy (and Larry) Wherley of Abingdon, Linda (and Mike Hines) Malone of Galesburg and Sharon (and Jim) Asmussen of Andrew, IA.
She was preceded in death by her father, Elbea Malone, and her grandparents, Jude and Loava Combs and Enmon (Red) and Myrtle Malone.
Jane graduated from Abingdon High School in 1969. She also attended classes at Carl Sandburg College, Fayetteville Community College and
the University of North Carolina.
Jane’s career was spent primarily in public relations and marketing roles on behalf of retirement homes and assisted living facilities in the Galesburg area. She was Assistant Administrator and Marketing Director for Rosewood Care Center. She also worked at Seminary Manor, was Manager of The Kensington, and later served as Director of Marketing for RFMS. She was last employed as Manager of Aunt Mayme Jane’s in Galesburg.
Jane devoted much of her free time to local charitable organizations and served in community leadership roles as Executive Director of the Knox County United Way, President of the Railroad Days Council and as Board Member of both the Carl Sandburg Days Festival and the Galesburg
Business Network. She was an active member of the Altrusa Club of Galesburg, Women Issues Network, Galesburg Noon Lions Club, Pilot Club, Optimist Club and served as a Chamber Ambassador. Jane was also a talented and committed fundraiser, spearheading efforts on behalf of an Abingdon Public Schools Referendum, the Galesburg Public Schools
Foundation, the Heart Association, Alzheimers Association, and Paul Mangieri’s campaign for Knox County States Attorney.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at the Abingdon Christian Church. Rev. Bob Malone will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.

Mr. Russell E. (Bucky) Swise, Galesburg Chapel

87, passed away Friday, March 23rd at his home at 49 Circle Dr.
Bucky was born in Galesburg on January 13, 1920 to Frank and Pearl Wicall Swise. He married Rosemary Creighton on May 30, 1942. She survives.
Also surviving are their four children, John (Cynthia) Swise of Harrisville, MI; Sally (John) Davidson of Dunlap; James (Kimberly) Swise of Chicago; and Tom (Adele) Swise of Oklahoma City, OK; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Bucky graduated from Galesburg High School in 1938. He then went on to Knox College, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. An outstanding athlete, he was awarded the Hunter trophy, and would later be inducted into both the GHS and the Knox-Lombard Athletic Halls of Fame.
After graduating from Knox in 1942, he was commissioned by ROTC as a 2nd lt. in the infantry. He served for four years during World War II, where he was stationed in Australia and New Guinea. He participated in landings at Biac and Hollandia, earning the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge.
Bucky returned from the war and went on to teach and coach locally at both Hitchcock and Churchill Junior High Schools. He was later employed as an administrator and coach at Knox College. He was a co-owner of Gale Ward Sporting Goods until his retirement.
A gifted pianist, he and the late Chuck Gamble would often entertain at local events, billing themselves the “The Dueling Pianists.”
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Galesburg, Galesburg Noon Rotary Club, the Knox 50 Year Club, the Galesburg Retired Teachers’ Association, and he served on the Galesburg Library Board for 33 years.
Private family burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be a memorial service at 11:00am on Tuesday, March 27th at the First Presbyterian Church in Galesburg. Miss Lois G. Johnson, Galesburg Chapel

85, 19 E. Tompkins St., Galesburg, died at 9:40 AM Wednesday, March 21, 2007 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
She was born October 4, 1921 in Monmouth, IL, the daughter of Arthur and Laura Ekstrom Johnson.
She is survived by a brother, Kenneth T. (and Virginia) Johnson, Sr., Alexandria, VA, a nephew, Kenneth T. (and Sandy) Johnson, Jr., Vancouver, Canada, and a niece, Karen J. (and Robert) Bezin, Viroqua, WI.
She was a bookkeeper for the Knox County Farm Service for many years. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1939 and was responsible for coordinating most of her class reunions. She was a long time, active member of First Baptist Church. She organized many activities at Whiting Hall, where she was a resident, and was the treasurer of the Whiting Hall Resident’s Council. She had lived in Galesburg most of her life. She was devoted to her family.
Funeral will be 10 AM Monday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 7 PM Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery. 97, 592 W. Knox St., Galesburg, died at 9 PM Monday, March 12, 2007 in Beaufort, SC.
She was born April 10, 1909 in Galesburg the daughter of William M. and Effie Holt Skinner. She married Robert Earl Williams.
She is survived by a son, R. Vincent Williams, Galesburg, a daughter, Sharon J. (and Jerry) Middleton, Beaufort, SC, 3 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister.
She worked in food service at the Beta Theta Pi House at Knox College and at the former Galesburg Research Hospital. She was an active member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church. She had lived in Galesburg her entire life.

She was born August 1, 1917 in Chicago, IL the daughter of Sam and Marian “Mae” Chaness Feldman.
She is survived by one sister, Annette (and Israel) Soloman of Carlsbad, CA and one niece, Mae Wells of Lombard IL. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She worked at KCCDD for several years. She has always lived in Illinois. She was of the Jewish Faith. She enjoyed coloring, reading, jewelry, joking around and personal attention. She also cared for her baby doll, Annabelle.

Mrs. Virginia Alice Muenzenmeyer, Abingdon Chapel

91 died at 12:45 pm Friday, March 16, 2007 at 612 W. Jackson St., the home of her daughter, whom she resided with the past year.
She was born on October 21, 1915 in Greenfield, IN to George and Cora A. Strahl Rigdon. After the death of her parents, she moved to Abingdon at the age of nine and was raised by her uncle and aunt, J.E. and Mary Jane Hamilton. She married Karl E. Muenzenmeyer on October 4, 1946 in Kahoka, MO. He preceded her in death on December 3, 1988. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karlene Way, three brothers, Gerald Rigdon, Kenny Rigdon and Donald Rigdon, and one sister, Lucille Wall.
Surviving is one daughter, Mary Jane (Howard) Pigg of Abingdon; three grandchildren, Gene Pigg, Nick Way and Tonya Johnson; 5 great grandchildren.
She graduated from Abingdon High School in 1933 and from Brown’s Business College in Galesburg in 1934. She worked as a pharmacist assistant for 34 years at the former Gustus Drug Store in Abingdon, retiring in 1994.
She was a member of First Assembly of God in Abingdon, where she played the piano.
She was a member of the Grandmothers Club, Business & Professional Women and also volunteered for 30 years at the Care Center of Abingdon.
Graveside service will be at 1:00 pm Monday, March 19, 2007 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev. Todd Henderson will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
