Mr. Earl C. Sargent, Galesburg Chapel

96, 887 E. Knox St., Galesburg, died at 11:12 AM Tuesday, September 25, 2007 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born May 23, 1911 in Haverhill, Mass., the son of Gilbert G. and Clara A. Bell Sargent. He married Verna Seaman on September 1, 1940 in Haverhill. She preceded him in death on August 30, 1997.
He is survived by Peggy Pratt-Carter of Newport News, VA, who was raised in the Sargent’s home. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and three sisters.
He was a laborer and mechanic at the former Gale Products Division of Outboard Marine Corporation in Galesburg for 30 years. He retired in 1977.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and the International Association of Machinists Union. He graduated from Haverhill High School in 1930. He had lived in Galesburg since 1947. He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946.
Funeral will be 11:30 AM Friday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be 10:30 to 11:30 AM Friday at the chapel. Mrs. Marjorie L. Allen, Galesburg Chapel

74, 213 Illinois Ave., East Galesburg, died at 4:45 PM Monday, September 24, 2007 at home.
She was born March 16, 1933 in Atlanta, MO, the daughter of Tye and Jewell Ramsey Bogeart. She married Richard R. Allen on August 26, 1950 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on October 12, 1993.
She is survived by 3 daughters, Terri Allen and Rebecca Allen, both of Galesburg and Judy Chockley, East Galesburg, one granddaughter, Laryssa Chockley, a brother, James (and Barb) Bogeart, Macomb, 2 sisters, Mary Stoneking, Mt. Zion, IL and Roberta (and Dennis) Ritchie, Las Vegas, NV, and several nieces and nephews.
She was an assembler at Maytag Corporation for 22 years, retiring in 1988.
Funeral will be 1:30 PM Thursday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Milton Marquith will officiate. Visitation will be noon to 1:30 PM Thursday at the chapel. Mr. Jim L. (Peckerhead) DeJaynes, Abingdon Chapel

63 of Abingdon died at 3:08 am Friday, September 21, 2007 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.
He was born on September 12, 1944 in Galesburg to Orville and Geraldine Curtis DeJaynes.
Jim is survived by a daughter, Jamie Ray of Gulfport, MS; a son, James M. (and Marcia) DeJaynes of Albuquerque, NM; 6 grand-children and 1 great grandchild; two brothers, Ronnie DeJaynes of Abingdon and Bill (and Jackie) DeJaynes of Abingdon; a sister, Virginia (and Mike) Castle of St. Augustine.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Cody Ray.
Jim was a lifelong Abingdon resident. He graduated from Abingdon High School. He later graduated from the Omaha Trade School of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. He worked as a plumber. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Baseball fan and a Green Bay Packer Football fan. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, was an avid hunter and fisherman and especially enjoyed rabbit hunting with his beagles. He also enjoyed mushrooming and being a good washer thrower.
He was a member of the Sons of American Legion at the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 and was a past volunteer fireman for over 20 years for the Abingdon Fire Protection District.
Funeral service will be 10:00 am Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Monday at the chapel. Cremation will be accorded following the funeral service.
Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be established.

Mrs. Judy M. Godsil, Abingdon Chapel

60 of The Villages, FL and formerly of Abingdon and Galesburg died Monday September 10, 2007 in The Village Regional Hospital.
She was born on July 24, 1947 in Avon to Albert and Margaret Jacobs Anderson. She married Ted Godsil.
Judy is survived by her loving husband, Ted, two sons, Troy (and Kelly) Godsil of Loveland, CO and Scott Godsil of Monmouth; 5 grandchildren; a brother, John (and Margaret) Anderson of Valley Center, CA and two sisters, Janet Casey of Abingdon and Jeanine (and Harold) Erickson of Elizabethtown, KY.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She graduated from Abingdon High School. She worked for several years at the Maytag Corp. in Galesburg. She had just recently moved to Florida.
Judy loved to sit next to Ted as they both worked on their computers. She had a passion to listen to “Country Oldies” on WAAG during the noon hour and to try to win dinner for two at Hungry Hobo.
She loved her husband, sons and grandchildren very dearly.
Cremation was accorded. Visitation with the family will be held from 1:00pm to 3:00 pm Saturday, September 22, 2007 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.

Mrs. Rhonda L. Nance, Galesburg Chapel

49, of 643 Day St., died at 8:07 AM Tuesday September 18, 2007 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born September 30, 1957 in Joliet, IL the daughter of Everett Lee and Cora M. Smith Blackburn. She married Roger E. Nance on October 7, 1974 in Peoria, IL. He survives.
Also surviving is her mother, Cora M. Anno of Galesburg, two sons, Steven E. Nance of Galesburg and Jace A. (and Corrine Williams) Nance of Galesburg, one daughter, Corinne Adria (and Sam Holman) Nance of Oneida, IL, one sister, Rita Jean (and Roger M.) Haviland of Brazil, IN and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father.
She was currently working for Shoe Sensation and Target. She received an Associates Degree in Accounting from Carl Sandburg College. She was a very spiritual person. She was a member of the Ladies of the Moose 880. She participated in ROTC. She was an avid reader and loved yard sales. She was a very outgoing and loving woman.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 AM Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be 6 to 8 PM Friday evening at the chapel. Mrs. Alice L. Tolbert, Galesburg Chapel

89, of 1145 Frank St. Galesburg died at 3 AM Wednesday September 19, 2007 in Cottage Hospital.

She was born March 13, 1918 in Abingdon IL the daughter of Albert E. and Lennie Stegall Johnson. She married John Swanson, she then married LeRoy Peterson, and Arthur Swanson in 1966 in Galesburg. She later married Ernest Paul Tolbert on August 20, 1993 in Wataga, IL. She is preceded in death by all her husbands.

She is survived by one son Paul L. Peterson of Leesburg, FL and one daughter Joyce Huss of Galesburg, step sons, step daughters and step grandchildren, one brother Vernon (and Mary) Johnson of Galesburg, one sister Dorothy Wilson of Galesburg, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

She was a homemaker. She was a past member of the First Lutheran Church. She has lived in Galesburg her entire life.

Graveside services are scheduled for 1:30 PM Saturday September 22, 2007 in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in North Henderson IL. The Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Mr. Ward A. Roseberry, Galesburg Chapel

He was born November 10, 1933 in Galesburg to Ralph and Maxine Ward Roseberry. He married Barbara A. Gordon Olin October 6, 1984 in Alexis, IL. She survives.
Also surviving is a step son Clint Olin of Galesburg, 2 stepdaughters Julie (husband Don) Fox of Alexis and Cindy (Husband Bob) Gueltzow of Louisville, KY, 8 step grandchildren and 5 nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Ward was a design engineer for Butler Manufacturing Company from 1955 – 1963. From 1963 until his retirement in 1993 he was a design engineer, legal consultant and had 2 patents for Lawn-Boy Inc. and Toro. He was a Knoxville High School graduate and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1955 from Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL. He served in the US Army from 1956 – 1958. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, Ducks Unlimited, Society of Automotive Engineers and American Metal Society. He loved hunting, fishing, woodworking and playing cards. He lived in Knoxville and Galesburg most of his life.
Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Thursday September 20, 2007 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg chapel with the Rev. Ernest Pizzamiglio officiating. Mrs. Twila Maxine (Macky) Foster Westergard, Abingdon Chapel

She was born on January 28, 1932 in Bushnell to Willy & Erma Chambers Johnson. She married Sala Foster in 1950, but divorced in 1972. He preceded her in death. She married Robert “Bob” Westergard on August 14, 1979. He survives.
She is also survived by one son Ricky (and Linda) Foster of Abingdon; one grandson, Anthony (and Jessie) Foster of LaGrange, Missouri; one brother, Chuck (and Elsie) Johnson of Abingdon; two sisters, Donna Lane of Galesburg and Karen Lankford of New Jersey.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters; Bernita Johnson and Sharon Smith; and one brother, Wayne Johnson.
She was a graduate of Abingdon High School and Browns Business College, where she learned to type 162 words per minute with no errors.
Maxine worked at the Admiral Corporation for over 20 years. She later worked as an executive secretary for a private business and attorneys in Texas.
During her years in Abingdon, she was an active member and past president of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 Auxiliary, past member of the Sunshine Girls; and an active member and officer of numerous Bowling Leagues. She was a charter member of the Abingdon Historical Society.
Maxine was married to Sala Foster for approx. 22 years. They lived in Abingdon for the majority of those years, where they raised Rick. Maxine later divorced Sala, and set out for adventure in Arkansas and Texas. She met and married Bob Westergard, and they settled in Sachse, Texas for over 25 years. They returned to Illinois, in July, 2006, due to Maxine’s failing health.
Cremation will be accorded. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. Private burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

Mr. Morton L. Hotchkiss, Galesburg Chapel

He was born September 11, 1922 in Galesburg, IL to Ralph and Sara Morton Hotchkiss. He married Joan Felter September 2, 1948 in Antioch, Illinois. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Debra Lee (and Wayne) Mastin of Knoxville, IL and Shawna Ann (and Gary) Lorenz of Lake Zurich, IL; three grandchildren, Kylee Mastin, Kane Mastin and Megan Lorenz Rady.
He worked for Butler Manufacturing Co. for 13 years becoming manager of the building service department until its movement to Kansas City. He then worked for 13 years at Gale Products, Outboard Marine Corp. in their Pioneer Chainsaw Division. When Pioneer was sold he joined Town & Country Real Estate.
Morton graduated from Galesburg High School in 1940 and attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago. After working briefly in Chicago as a commercial artist, he returned to Galesburg to attend Knox College. His education was interrupted when he enlisted in the US Army during World War II.
He was a member of the Galesburg First United Methodist Church, Phi Delta Theta fraternity, Knox Fifty Year Club, Knoxville American Legion Post 740 and a former member of the Knoxville Planning Commission. He was a volunteer for F.I.S.H. and for the Knox County Humane Society. He was known for his pen and ink drawings of historic buildings, especially those on the Knox College campus.
Memorial service will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Grulke officiating. Visitation will be from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Mrs. Pheobe Johnson, Galesburg Chapel

93, of 1250 W. Carl Sandburg Dr., Galesburg, IL, formerly of 121 W. Simmons St., died at 7:00 AM Sunday, September 16, 2007 at the Rosewood Healthcare Center.
She was born July 9, 1914 in Galesburg, IL the daughter of Arthur and Lillian McGahey St. George. She married Elmer W. Johnson in Monmouth, IL on August 9, 1929. He preceded her in death January 14, 1990.
She is survived by two sons, Howard W. “Hod” (and Cheryl) Johnson of Galesburg, IL and Richard C. (and Nina) Johnson of Vella Vista, AR; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Janet Vilardo and Lillian Johnson, seven brothers and two sisters.
She worked for Community School District #205 in the lunch program for 25 years retiring in 1975. She was a member of the Covenant Church.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel with Rev. Thomas Ek officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Chapel.
