Mrs. Mary E. Strong, Galesburg Chapel

72, of 1072 Olive St., Galesburg, IL died at 4:55 PM Friday, October 25, 2007 at her home.
She was born on February 1, 1935 in Hartford, CT the daughter of John and Evelyn Belliveue O’Connor. She had married James Donovan in 1956 in Tariffville, CT. She then married Charles Strong in 1965 in the San Fernando Valley, CA.
Surviving are two sons, Kevin J. Donovan and Kenneth M. Donovan, both of Galesburg; a daughter, Mary Deutsch of Galesburg; five grandchildren, Ryan, Melanie, Danny, Jaclyn and Chase. She was preceded in death by a sister.
Mary had dedicated her life to bowling. She was the previous owner of Northgate Lanes in Galesburg for 15 years. During that time she was the host of the 2001 Illinois Men’s State Tournament. Prior to that time she worked 15 years with AMF Bowling Corporation as a manager and then regional supervisor that included the states of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri.
She was president of the CT Women’s Bowling Association from 1976 to 1978 and was inducted into the CT Women’s Hall of Fame in 1992.
Mary also enjoyed golf, swimming, billiards and softball. She had a deep love of animals.

Mrs. Eva L. Ascher, Galesburg Chapel

84, of 866 E. South St., Galesburg, died at 5 PM Friday October 26, 2007 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born May 1, 1923 in Victoria, IL the daughter of Henry and Grace Wagher Pennington. She married Benjamin Peacock on April 10, 1944. He preceded her in death on December 31, 1950. She later married Donald W. Ascher, Sr. in Victoria on November 15, 1953. He preceded her in death on September 9, 2004.
She is survived by one son, Donald (and Brenda) Ascher, Jr. of Galesburg; three daughters, Kathleen Tafoya of Aurora, CO, Sharon Kubitz of Mt. Vernon, IL and Phyllis Peacock of Las Vegas, NV, six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
She graduated from Victoria High School in 1941 and from Cottage Hospital School of Nursing in 1944.  She worked as a registered nurse at Cottage Hospital for 24 years, retiring in April 1985. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285.
Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Bob Wakefield officiating. Mrs. Betty Jean Drake, Galesburg Chapel

She was born on April 21, 1928 in Clarinda, IA to Earnest Leroy and Mae Etta Berringer Knott. She married Louis E. Woods on March 10, 1947. She then married Wendell H. Drake on November 7, 1966 in Galesburg, IL. He preceded her in death on February 8, 2000.
She is survived by four sons, Edwin (and Bonnie) Woods of Mackinaw, IL, Dorance (and Barb) Drake, Larry Drake, and Sam (and Kim) Drake, all of Galesburg; a daughter, Elaine (and Robert) Morefield of Shelbyville, IL; a sister, Doris Lee Brown of Levisy, MO, 18 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
She worked at Wonder Bread for 14 ½ years, retiring in 1984. She was a 1946 graduate of Hale (MO) High School. She was a member of the Greenbush Christian Church. She was also a member of the Galesburg Horseshoe Club. She bowled for over 20 years in Northgate and Abingdon bowling leagues. She helped with the SHARE program in Galesburg.
Graveside services will be 11:30 AM Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg, with Rev. Milton Marquith officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the family.

Mrs. Norma Guenther, Galesburg Chapel

She was born on June 16, 1931 in Quincy, IL to William and Anna Boekenkamp DeLonjay. She married Lester Earl Guenther, Jr. on March 14, 1975 in Carthage, IL. He preceded her in death on April 20, 2007.
She is survived by seven daughters, Carolyn (and Larry) Grainger of Carthage, Susan (and Andy) Jackson of Clayton, IL, Barbara (and Cory) Jones of Warsaw, IL, Lori Creasey of Kirkwood, IL, Teresa (and David) Fink of Carthage, Cara Ericson of Monmouth, Pammie (and Bill) Grys of Sherrard, IL, 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jamie Lynn Fink.
She drove for DCM Trucklines for 20 years, retiring in 2003. She was a graduate of Unity High School, Mendon, IL. She adhered to the Lutheran faith and enjoyed her family, bingo, the casino and the farm.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, October 29, 2007 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. David Park officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM Monday at the Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to the family.

Mr. Everett L. “Roy” Lewis, Galesburg Chapel

He was born on August 31, 1926 in Beverly, IL to Harry and Nina Kaylor Lewis. He married Norma Beth Famulener on June 30, 1946 in Naperville, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Larry (and Christine) Lewis of Roscoe, IL, Lindon (and Carrie) Lewis of Boulder, CO and Michael (and Lisa) Lewis of Peoria, IL; a daughter, Crystal (and Peter) Beardsley of Oconomowoc, WI; a sister, Betty (and Bill) Kepple of Avon, IL; 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
He was a Service Manager at Galesburg Lincoln-Mercury for more than 40 years.
He was a 1944 graduate of Avon High School.
He had served on the Abingdon School Board where he served as its Secretary and President. He also served on the Board of Directors for the former Fidelity Federal Savings and Loan in Abingdon. He was a former member and officer of the Abingdon Kiwanis Club, a 57 year member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge #185, a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381, and the Lake Bracken Country Club, where he was an avid golfer.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater, where he participated in the Battle of Okinawa.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Monday, October 29, 2007 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Mrs. Eleanor Landon officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Sunday, October 28, 2007 at the Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg with Military Rites by Harry E. Mrs. Marilyn Fawer, Galesburg Chapel

She was born August 8, 1933 in Moberly, MO the daughter of Jess and Alta Tully Bumgarner. She married Lyle D. Fawer in Mackinaw, IL on July 1, 1955.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, Steve and Marcy Fawer of Galesburg and David and Kim Fawer of Cedar Rapids, IA; two daughters, Debbie and Mark Weitekamp and Lynne and Randy Masters, both of Pekin, IL; one brother, Jess and Dorothy Bumgarner of Lancaster, CA; seven grandchildren, Laura and Sarah Weitekamp, Nicholas and Timothy Masters, and Tyler, Garrett, and Nathan Fawer. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.
She graduated from Mackinaw High School. She was a homemaker, attended Bethel Baptist Church, was a volunteer at Cottage Hospital for over 20 years. She loved her family and the outdoors.
Funeral services will be 1000 AM Friday, October 26, 2007 at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev Lee Johnson officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, October 25, 2007 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Mr. Marion Marcy “Red” Woolsteen, Galesburg Chapel

86, of Toulon, IL, formerly of Peoria, IL died at 9:30 AM Tuesday October 23, 2007 in the Toulon Health Care center.
He was born February 11, 1921 in Peoria the son of Bruce Samuel and Daisy Mae Powers Woolsteen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
He worked as a laborer for SS White Dental Manufacturing in Peoria in 1937.

Mr. Jasper Lewis Jones, Galesburg Chapel

He was born August 21, 1914 in Orange Township, Knox County, IL, the son of Kline and Ferole Smith Jones. He married Shirley A. Whitcomb on May 11, 1946 in Knoxville, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are 4 daughters, Kathleen Shaw, Galesburg, Yvette (and Dan) Boone, Morristown, TN, Beverly (and William) Nugent, Las Vegas, NV, and Debby Smith Jones, Galesburg, a son, Richard (and Bonnie) Jones, Galesburg, a sister, Ruth Pruett, Knoxville, a brother, Lowell F. Jones, Denver, CO, 8 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and 4 sisters.
Jasper was a salesman for Trapp Ford and then was the shop foreman for Weaver Chrysler. He was the owner of Jonesie’s Café for 8 years. He was a custodian for Galesburg School District 205 for 12 years. He retired in 1976.
He attended Knoxville High School. He was a member of First Christian Church in Galesburg. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 2257. He had lived in this area his entire life.
He served in the United States Army during WWII from 1941 to 1945 achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was stationed in the Western Pacific.
Funeral will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 23, 2007 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. MJ Fitch and Rev. Greg Fitch will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 2PM Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Mr. Ross Elmer Bent, Abingdon Chapel

flag1.gifbent-ross-photo.jpg81, Galesburg, died at 3:22 A.M., Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the Seminary Manor Nursing Home.  Ross was born Christmas Day, 1925, in Princeville, Illinois to Hazel and Daniel Bent.  He married Cora L. Emmons of Bellevue, Illinois on September 15th, 1958.  Ross was preceded in Death by his parents Daniel and Hazel Bent; his brother Oliver Daniel (Cye) Bent, and his sisters, Maxine Berkshire, Nadine Gillenwater and Eileen Lewis.   Ross is survived by his wife Cora Bent and his children Dan (and Julie) Bent, Peoria; Pamela (and Ron) Williams, Mackinaw; Sharon Norton, Galesburg; Teddy (and Sharon) Bent, Peoria; Robert (and Donna) Bent, Littlerock, CA; Christine (and Joe) Spence, Galesburg; and his brother Paul Bent, Vancouver, WA; and 11 grandchildren. 

Ross worked for PABST Brewery, the Teamsters driving for Producers Dairy, Briggs Pottery and Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS) until his retirement.  Ross served as a PFC and TEC Sgt., heavy machine gunner, in WWII in Company H, 66th Infantry in the US Army.  During WWII, Ross received 2 Bronze Stars and was recommended for a Purple Heart for his participation in the Rhineland and Central European Campaigns.  After returning from WWII, Ross joined the Abingdon American Legion.  Ross enjoyed visiting with family and friends.  Hobbies included fishing (spending many days fishing with Jim Bent) and bowling. 

Visitation will be from 9:30 am to 11:00 am Saturday, October 20, 2007 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.  Father Ernest Pizzamiglio will offer a brief Prayer Service immediately following the visitation.  Graveside services will be held at the Abingdon Cemetery at 11:30 A.M. Saturday, October 20, 2007 with military Rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381.  Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in his name.  Special thanks go out to the Aides, Nurses, Staff and Administration of Seminary Manor and Community Hospices of America for the outstanding care and comfort that was provided to Ross, all the family members and friends.

Mrs. Mary Ann (Paulsgrove) Turney, Abingdon Chapel

104 of Harrison, AR and formerly of Abingdon died Sunday, October 14, 2007 at Hilcrest Home in Harrison.
She was born on November 8, 1902 in Abingdon, a daughter of John and Jennie (Franklin) Paulsgrove. She married John Calvin Turney. He preceded her in death on February 12, 1976. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, William Erwin and a great grandson, Brian Michael Redding and a brother, James Paulsgrove.
She is survived by two daughters, Marion Erwin of Galesburg and Shirley (and Frank) Redding of Harrison; two grandsons, Michael Redding of Beaumont, TX and Patrick Redding of Silsbie, TX; 9 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Turney was a member of Faith Assembly of God in Harrison. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm Friday, October 19, 2007 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 1:00 pm Friday at the chapel.
