Mrs. Ruby LaRene Martin, Abingdon Chapel

90, a resident of the Care Center of Abingdon, died at 5:35 pm Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the Care Center of Abingdon.
Cremation will be accorded. Services will be announced at a later date. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Colleen J. Sprinkle, Galesburg Chapel

She was born December 21, 1935 in Yates City, IL the only child of Chester and Rozinah Barber Evans. She married Harley Smith in 1951. She later married Basil Sprinkle on June 6, 1967 in Galesburg. He survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Melvin (and Ingrid) Smith of Galesburg, Greg (and Shelly) Sprinkle of Rock Island, IL, Hank (and Karen) Sprinkle of Palm Springs, CA, and Matt (and Krissy) Sprinkle of Peoria, IL; two daughters, Rose (and Bob) St. George of Galesburg and Tammie (and Jay) Vargas of Galesburg; one step daughter, Pam (and Max) Allison of Peoria; eighteen grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She was a Blackjack dealer in the Nevada Club in Reno, NV, there she dealt to Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. She later moved to Galesburg and worked in Quality Assurance for Maytag for 27 years, retiring in 1996. She graduated from Valley High School. She was a member of the East Galesburg Community Chapel. She was a member of the Senior Circle and a member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed traveling, antiques, Tai Chi, her family and walking.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:30 AM Monday December 31, 2007 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Milton Marquith will officiate. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Sunday at the chapel. Mrs. Louella Maxine Lundry Thurman, Abingdon Chapel

74, of rural route Abingdon, died at home, 7:30 AM Thursday, December 27, 2007. Louella was born December 3, 1933, in Fulton County, Illinois, to Cecil J. Lundry and Francis B. (Keefauver) Lundry. She married her beloved husband John M. Thurman on November 25, 1951 in Canton, Illinois and he died March 6, 1985.
She graduated from Valley High School as salutatorian of her class and later attended Brown’s Business College and Carl Sandburg College, Galesburg, Illinois. Early in her career she was a bookkeeper for Good Chevrolet, Galesburg, Illinois, and Saunders Hospital, Avon, Illinois. In 1972 she became the owner and operator of the Pantry Restaurant in Abingdon, Illinois. Later in her career, she was a customer service representative for NAEIR, Galesburg, Illinois, twice receiving the Norbert Smith Quality Award for employee excellence.
She loved to read, go to the movies, travel with friends and family and attend sporting and social events with her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are her daughter Dr. Constance Cole Thurman (Gaylord “Bud” Cole), Galesburg, Illinois; two sons, Craig Thurman, Abingdon, Illinois, and Dr. Curtis Thurman (Elizabeth), Champaign, Illinois; 5 grandchildren, Leigh Lucas-Clay (Jason Clay), Robert Thurman, Jackson Thurman, Grant Thurman and Katherine Thurman; three bonus grandchildren, Erin Nelson, Jennifer Scwhallie (Jayson Scwhallie), and Kelsey Cole; a sister, Mary Allen of Abingdon, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, Robert A. Lundry.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 30, 2007, from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 P.M. at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, 206 N. Washington St., Abingdon, IL and funeral services will immediately follow at 2 P.M. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery.

Mrs. Ruth N. Fields, Galesburg Chapel

78, Springfield, formerly of Galesburg, died at 10:40 PM Wednesday, December 26, 2007 in St. John’s Hospital, Springfield.
She was born July 13, 1929 in Plano, IL, the daughter of Bert W. and Florence L. Drinnen Garrett. She married Myron C. “Bud” Fields on February 14, 1948 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on March 30, 1986.
She is survived by 3 daughters, Linda S. (and Byron) Fields-Dykes, Tulsa, OK, Laurie R. (and Bill) Bruce, Springfield, and Lorraine K. (and Donald) Wareham, Taylorville, IL, 2 grandchildren, Kadi Lynn Hamra and Julia Lynn Wareham, 2 step grandchildren, Brian Bruce and Christopher Bruce, one great grandson, Nathan Hamra, and 3 step great-grandchildren, Justin Bruce, Paige Bruce, and Matthew Bruce. She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Richard Garrett and Ralph Garrett and one sister, Roberta Applebey.
She was a homemaker. She graduated from Galesburg High School. She had lived most of her life in Galesburg, until moving to the Springfield area in 2002.
She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg. She had also helped with cleaning Central Congregational Church.

infant daughter of Wayne M. and Christine M. (Hawkinson) Swanson of 83 Garfield Ave., died at birth at 2:09 AM Tuesday, December 25, 2007 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
She is survived by her parents, Wayne and Christine Swanson, and grandparents, Kenneth and Phyllis Hawkinson and Wynne A. Worley, all of Galesburg.

Mrs. Betty L. Dragoo, Galesburg Chapel

She was born May 12, 1928 in Bellaire, OH, the daughter of William Dawson. She married Benjamin E. Dragoo in Trenton, NJ. He survives.
Also surviving is a son, Marc E. (and Charlotte) Dragoo, Clearwater, FL, 2 daughters, Tami Dragoo, Alpha, IL and Jamie Dragoo, Galesburg, a brother, David Dawson, Alliance, NE, a half sister, Irene Taylor, Bellaire, OH, 6 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
She worked for the State of Illinois for 21 years, first for the former Galesburg State Research Hospital and then for the former Zeller Mental Health Center in Peoria. She retired on January 1, 1999.
She graduated from Bellaire High School in 1947. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Galesburg. She enjoyed bowling and golf.

Miss Anita Virginia Gustafson, Galesburg Chapel

She was born January 31, 1917 in Galesburg, the daughter of Carl A. and Anna Johnson Gustafson.
She was preceded in death by 4 sisters.
She was an elementary school librarian for Galesburg School District 205 for 40 years, retiring in 1980.
She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1932 and from the University of Illinois. She was a member of First Lutheran Church. She was also an accomplished pianist.

Mrs. Mary “Molly” Hicks, Galesburg Chapel

She was born May 23, 1924 in Jarrow, England, the daughter of John and Henrietta Carr Burnett. She married John P. Hicks on June 9, 1945 in Spondon, Derbyshire, England. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1985.
She is survived by a son, Terry (and Betty) Hicks, Galesburg, a daughter, Elizabeth Diehm, Norman, OK, a sister, Lily Howarth, Grimsby, England, and 2 grandchildren, Andrea Hicks and Jeremy Hicks, both of LaFayette, IN. She was also preceded in death by a brother, John Burnett.
She worked at the Rolls Royce factory in England making parts for aircraft engines during WWII. She attended First Baptist Church in Galesburg. She enjoyed golf and reading.
Funeral will be 1:00 PM Thursday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be 12:00 to 1:00 PM Thursday at the chapel. Mr. Elmer “Jim” Dickeson, Galesburg Chapel

He was born on April 16, 1923 in Galesburg to Elmer Thomas and Martha Sparks Dickeson. He married Frances Leathers on October 22, 1950 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving is a son, James R. (and Judy) Dickeson of Riverside, IL; two daughters, Mary (and Nick) Bruketta of Peoria and Linda Burklund of Cleveland, OH and three grandchildren, Nicholas James Bruketta, Kelsey Dickeson and Luke Dickeson.
He was an engineer for Burlington-Northern Railroad for 44 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member and deacon of the First Christian Church. He was also a member of the Galesburg Masonic Lodge, the Peoria Shrine and the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285.
He served in the Navy during World War II seeing action in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas.
Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Fitch officiating. Visitation will be an hour before the service. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church. Mrs. Darlene May Rice, Abingdon Chapel

Darlene was born on February 13, 1934 in Fulton County, IL to Lessie Lee and Maudie Pansy (Postin) Johnson. She married Lehman “Jack” Rice on October 17, 1955 in Pocahontas, Arkansas. He survives.
Also surviving are her brothers, Frank Johnson of Abingdon, Carl (Nettie) Johnson of Abingdon, Emil Johnson, Sr. of RR St. Augustine, Lloyd (and Betty) Johnson of Gladstone, Wayne (and Lynn) Johnson of Burns, OR , Jim Johnson of Avon, and Ronald (and Theresa) Johnson of Avon; her sisters, Carol Ashby of Abingdon and Maudie (and Luther) Riley of Abingdon, and Florence (and Tom) White of Milan; several nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Les, Thomas and Robert and a sister, Dolly.
She Lived in Abingdon most of her life. She worked at Blue Bell Manufacturing in Abingdon and later at Knox Laundry. She was a homemaker and a very good cook.
She was a member of the Abingdon Apostolic Harvest House.
Darlene’s funeral will be at 11:00 am Saturday, December 22, 2007 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Rev. Danny E. Hunt will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Saturday at the chapel.
