Mr. William K. ‘Bill’ Eldert, Galesburg Chapel

bill.jpg66, of Danforth, IL died at 8:00 AM Monday, March 24, 2008 at Provena St. Mary’s Hospital, Kankakee, IL following a six-year illness.
He was born March 27, 1941, in Galesburg, to Arvid and Naomi (Haptonstall) Eldert. His childhood was spent in Galesburg. He graduated from Galesburg High School. He married Jennefer R. Wetherford on Feb. 14, 1964. She survives.

Survivors include three children, Andrea Kay Eldert of Gilman, Aaron (and Renee) of Remington, Ind., and Arik Eldert of Redondo Beach, Calif.; his mother, Naomi Eldert of Galesburg; three grandchildren, Joelle, Megan and Zane; two brothers, Maurice and Dennis, both of Galesburg; one uncle, Maurice Haptonstall of Galesburg; one aunt, Wyona Illes of Toulon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his father, Arvid, and grandparents.

Bill moved from Galesburg to Gilman in 1967. He also lived in Onarga for several years. He was a member of Mission Covenant Church, Galesburg. Bill was a farmer and truck driver for Apolis Transportation in Peotone. He enjoyed family, friends, camping, tractor pulls and trucking.

Private graveside services will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Monday, March 31, 2008 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to Provena St. Mary’s Dialysis Centers.

Mr. Gale “Bud” Wade Redwell,aka Gale Bredwell, Abingdon Chapel

He was born on March 19, 1938 in Galesburg, a son of Vinton and Maxine Richey Bredwell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally.
Surviving is his mother, Maxine Palmer of Abingdon; a sister, Marlene Harden of Atascadero, CA; two stepbrothers, Hollis (and Carol) Palmer of Abingdon and Floyd (and Rose) Palmer of Abingdon and nieces and nephews.
He served in the Air Force. Bud worked as a forklift mechanic in California.

Mr. Earl A. Plue, Galesburg Chapel

plue.jpg90, of 1188 Old Wagon Rd. Knoxville died at 6:45 AM Wednesday March 26, 2008 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born May 11, 1917 in Bloomington, IL the son of Walter and Cecil Hittle Plue. He was raised by his step father Fred Mendes who trained him as a fighter. He married Raynola L. Mulady on March 29, 1937 in Galesburg. She died January 9, 2003.
He is survived by two sons Roger A. (Cheryl) Plue and Fred R. Plue both of Galesburg; five daughters Charlene Mahnesmith of Galesburg, Robbie (Carl Sr.) Malcolm of Knoxville, Jean Earlene McDowell of Galesburg, Lucy (Randy) Goben and Kathy (Frank) Howard both of Knoxville, twenty-six grandchildren, sixty-two great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one daughter Barbara Jo Plue, one sister and one grandson Donnie Mahnesmith.
He worked as a laborer for Local #538 for several years. He also worked at the former Midwest Manufacturing Company and at the Rowe Manufacturing Company as a welder. He retired in 1984. He has lived in Galesburg since 1929. He was a member of the Local #538. He was a golden glove boxer in the light weight division in the Peoria, Galesburg, Burlington IA and other surrounding areas. He was called “Kid” Mendes. He was a member of the East Galesburg Community Church.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday in the Knoxville Cemetery. The Rev. Milton Marquith will officiate. Mr. Leonard F. Mahnesmith, Galesburg Chapel

mahnesmith.jpgMr. Leonard F. Mahnesmith, 73, of 1546 Williams St. Galesburg died at 5:20 PM Monday March 24, 2008 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born January 7, 1935 in Galesburg the son of Leonard O. and Lillian E. Miller Mahnesmith. He married Velda G. Douglas on March 26, 1955 in Cambridge IL. She died April 24, 2004.
He is survived by three sons Daniel (Robin) Mahnesmith of Wataga IL, John Mahnesmith of Galesburg, Lennie (Alice Puckett) Mahnesmith of Galesburg; one sister Patty Ray (James) of Cameron, IL and one sister-in-law Barb Renwick of Galesburg, eight grandchildren, four step grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son Gary, five brothers, two sisters and one step grandson Sr. Airman Daniel B. Miller, JR EOD.
He first was a truck driver for Roger Brothers. He later worked as a long distance truck driver, last driving for Warren Transportation in Waterloo, IA.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11 AM Friday in Wataga Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be 5:30-7:00 PM Thursday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Mr. Rodney “Rod” W. Malmrose, Galesburg Chapel

He was born January 15, 1951 in Galesburg the son of Howard B. and Elaine W. Heiser Malmrose.
He is survived by two brothers Dave (Jody) Malmrose of San Tee CA and Mike (Sharon) Malmrose of Galesburg; two sisters Roxie Goodwin of Galesburg and Patty Trifone of Terre Haute, IN; an Aunt Pat (John) Jacobs of Dallas City, IL and several nieces and nephews.
He served in the US Army for 2 years during Vietnam War.
He worked as a machine operator for Smurfit-Stone for 20 years. He also worked for Northrup Construction in Carthage IL and Pat’s Tap in Dallas City, IL. He has lived in Galesburg his entire life. He was baptized in the Catholic Faith.
Graveside services are scheduled for 10 AM Friday in East Linwood Cemetery with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. The Rev. Rick Shriber will officiate. Miss Helen E. Tary, Galesburg Chapel

80, of 1267 S. Cherry St., Galesburg, IL died at 8:00 PM Friday, March 21, 2008 at her home.
She was born on October 4, 1927 in Keithsburg, IL to Scott and Grace Clark Tary.
She is survived by a nephew, Scott Holloway of Galesburg and a niece, Bonnie Holloway of Decatur, IL. She was preceded in death by a brother James Tary and four sisters Louise Tary, Margaret Holloway, Jean Walters, and Wilma Powless.
She began working for Rogers Brothers in 1953. She retired in December, 2007.
She was a 1944 graduate of Keithsburg High School, a member of the First United Methodist Church and an avid bingo player.

Mrs. Marjorie M. “Marge” Hovell, Abingdon Chapel

Marge was born in Warren County on May 9, 1912, to Henry and Ida Belle Dilts. She married Thomas Hovell in Jacksonville, IL on August 22, 1931. “Tommy” died March 19, 1968. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn (Ronald)Woolsey; 3 grand daughters - Dralene (Tom) Hughes of Mont Verde, Florida; Kelly (Ken)Heinritz of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and Wynne Schendel of Shoreview, Minnesota; 3 great grand children — Hannah Heinritz, Evan Schendel and Tana Schendel, one sister, Irene Hutchins of Bushnell,IL, and many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by 6 brothers and 1 sister.
Marge moved to the Abingdon area in 1929. She worked at the Blue Bell for 25 years and then as receptionist for Dr. J. A. Bowman for 24 years. She retired in 1975. She resided at the Blue Bell Towers for many years until her health caused a move to the Care Center of Abingdon.
She was very active in the Abingdon Christian Church, Circles at the church, Grandmothers Club, Quilt Circle and Club, and New Horizons. She will be remembers for the quilts she lovingly made and distributed to many nursing homes, family, and friends. She loved to be with people talking, playing games, or helping others.
Cremation will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at the Abingdon Christian Church, 409 South Main, Abingdon on Monday, March 24, 2008 at 10:30 am. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. John Franklin White, Abingdon Chapel

He was born on May 14, 1922 in Morgan County, IL to George Martin and Mary Ann Ridder White. He married Anita Moon on June 19, 1954 at Corpus Christi Church in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mary (and Scott) Brownfield and Gerry (and Kelvin) Lumberry; a son, Robert P. White and six grandchildren.
John served in the Army during WW II. He was a member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon.
He was a lifetime farmer and had lived in the Alexander, Waverly and Abingdon areas. He was a former 4-H leader and was a salesman for Crow Seed Corn.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:00 am Monday, March 24, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon. Father William Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:00 am to 8:45 am Monday at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Lula D. Hull, Abingdon Chapel

99 of Abingdon died at 2:10 am Friday, March 21, 2008 at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville.
She was born on May 4, 1908 in rural Warren County, a few miles west of Abingdon, IL. Lula was the seventh in line of the eight children of Abner and Chloe Sigman Courson. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including her nephew Gerald Goodman of Galesburg whom she helped raise, and several great nieces and great nephews. Though Lula had no children of her own, she was close to the children of her brothers and sisters and will be sorely missed by those who knew her as their beloved Aunt Lula.
Lula married Ellis Hull and lived in Abingdon for all of her adult life. She worked at the former Brass Factory in Abingdon for over thirty years and retired from there when the plant closed.
She enjoyed the flowers she raised and took care of, and also enjoyed watching the birds the she fed in her backyard. She spent a great deal of her time reading the papers, magazines, and books from the library. She leaves a special thanks to the ladies at the John Mosser Public Library in Abingdon for continuing to provide her with reading materials even after she could no longer get in to pick them up. She had also been very active in bowling in her earlier years.
Graveside service will be at 1:00 pm Monday, March 24, 2008 at the Abingdon Cemetery. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mrs. V. Lageta Neil, Galesburg Chapel

lageta.jpg92, 550 E. Carl Sandburg Drive, Galesburg, died at 3:50 AM Friday, March 21, 2008 in Rosewood Care Center.
She was born June 28, 1915 in El Dorado Springs, MO, the daughter of David S. and Letitia Neely Seitz. She married Jesse A. Neil on December 25, 1940 in Tuscumbia, MO. He preceded her in death on November 18, 1988.
She is survived by a son, Johnathan “Andy” (and Kathleen) Neil of Galesburg, 2 grandchildren, Shawna Claeys of Knoxville and Jason (and Elif) Conley of Waterford, MI, 4 precious great grandchildren, Drew, Logan, Tyler, and Jace, and a sister, Virdie Ewan, Sun City Center, FL. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, and a sister.
Lageta was a school teacher for 41 years. She taught in Missouri and New Mexico, and for the last 20 years of her career was an elementary school teacher for the ROVA School District. She retired in the early 1980’s.
She graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1931, attended Southwest Missouri Teacher’s College, and graduated from Missouri Valley College in Marshall, MO. She was a member of the local chapter of the Retired Teachers Association and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She also was a member of O.A.K.S. (Older Americans of Knox).
After retirement, she volunteered at Cottage Hospital and Cottage Corner for several years and most recently was a reading buddy at Seminary Estates. She enjoyed painting and reading. She was of the Protestant faith.
Graveside services will 12:30 PM Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.
