Mr. Donald W. Poe, Galesburg Chapel

He was born on November 14, 1920 in Ft. Madison, IA, the son of Elmer and Bessie P. Teter Poe. He married Phyllis Witherell in Galesburg on January 11, 1947. She survives.
Also surviving is a son, Lonnie (and Suzi) Poe of Mechanicsville, VA; a daughter, Virginia (and Barry) Shaver of Peoria, IL; a brother, Vincent (and Shirley) Poe of Galesburg, 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Mr. Poe worked for Community School District #205 in Galesburg for over 27 years, retiring in 1984. He served in the US Army during World War II in Africa, Italy and France.
He was a 1939 graduate of Galesburg High School. He was a member of the East Main Congregational United Church of Church, where he performed many hours of church work. He was a lifelong, avid Chicago Cubs Fan.
Funeral services will be 10 AM Wednesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Robin Faull officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday at the chapel. Mr. David L. Shumaker, Galesburg Chapel

He was born January 5, 1947 in Galesburg, the son of Andrew and Edith Rickords Shumaker. He married Rebecca Sue Moore on September 26, 1965 in Galesburg.
He is survived by his wife, three sons, David Todd (and Ann) Shumaker and Michael Lee (and Cindy) Shumaker, both of Galesburg, and Bradley Dean (and Erin) Shumaker of Champaign, IL, one daughter, Amy Sue (and Zackary) Smith of Washington, IL, two brothers, Carl Eugene (and Betty) Lind of Galesburg and Charles Robert “Chow” Lind of El Cajon, CA, four sisters, Annie Havens of Naples, FL , Joan (and Ben) Hinkson and Sandra Claeys, both of Galesburg, and Karen Currens of Washington, nine grandchildren, Nick Shumaker, Matt Shumaker, Brittany Shumaker, Amanda Shumaker, Autumn Shumaker, Andrew Shumaker, Jacob Shumaker, Alex Smith, and Abi Smith, and two loving companions, Gizmo and Buddy. He was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Billups.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1965. He worked for Benner Tea Company/Giant Foods, where he was store manager for eleven years. He later was store manager for Eagle Food Center for 30 years with the last five years as District Manager. He retired in 2003.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Dave was involved in the Cottage Hospital Talent Show in 1980 to raise money for the School of Nursing. He was treasurer for Galesburg Wrestling Club, member of the Board of Directors for the Galesburg Junior Football League, he was listed as one of the top ten chain store managers in Progressive Grocers Magazine, he was recognized as top store manager in 1993 in Progressive Grocers Magazine, he was Outstanding Eagle Club Manager in 1992, Outstanding Store Manager of the Year in 1993, a member of WhosWho in Executives and Professionals in 1994 and 1995. Dave deeply loved his family. His family was his life.
Funeral services will be 11:30 AM Wednesday April 30, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bradley Shumaker, Rev. Dr. Scott Grulke, and Rev. David Parker officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5-8 PM at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel. Cremation will follow services. Memorials may be made to Praireland Animal Welfare Center.

Mrs. Alberta J. Newburgh, Galesburg Chapel

64, of 500 E. Coal St., Wataga, IL died at 10:55 AM Sunday at her home.
She was born January 20, 1944 in Galesburg the daughter of Edwin and M. Alvera Peterson Krantz. She married Terry Newburgh on April 19, 1991 in Peoria, IL. He survives.
Also surviving is her mother, M. Alvera Krantz of Oneida, IL; one step son, Todd Newburgh of Springfield, IL; one step daughter, Nicole Campbell of Galesburg; one brother, Gayle (and Susie) Krantz of Oneida; one sister, Dixie (and Robert) Slater of Arlington, TX; a brother-in-law, Robert Mayer of Walcottville, IN; five nieces and nephews; fourteen great nieces and nephews; and two step granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Audrey Mayer.
She worked as a kindergarten school teacher in Lake Geneva, WI, retiring in 1977. She graduated from ROVA in 1962 and Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA in 1966. She was a member of the former Ontario Congregational Church. She enjoyed reading.
Cremation will be accorded. Private family memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. . Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Gertrude V. “Trudy” Kronsted, Galesburg Chapel

She was born on April 25, 1920 in Stark County, Illinois to Russell C. and Addie E. Loudenberg Briggs. She married Lester L. Kronsted in Peoria, IL on November 20, 1943. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1997.
She is survived by a son Darryl L. (and Ginny) Kronsted of Aurora, IL; a daughter, Judith L. (and Donald) Doubet of Williamsfield, IL and three grandchildren, Luke Doubet, Jenna Kronsted and Matt Kronsted. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Kronsted Owens, and a brother, Erny W. Briggs.
She was a registered nurse at Methodist Hospital in Peoria and at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. While at Cottage she was Coordinator of the Intensive Care Unit, of Pre-op and of Out-patient Surgery. She also was the owner of Kronsted’s Market from 1945 to 1960 in Wataga, IL and from 1962 to 1975 in Abingdon, IL.
She was a graduate of Bradford High School and of the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of the Wataga Congregational Church, the Illinois Nurses’ Association and the Wataga Drop-In Center.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, April 28, 2008 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. David Kramer will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Monday at the chapel. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wataga Drop-In Center. Mr. Matthew Allen Sexton, Galesburg Chapel

He was born November 1, 1973 in Galesburg, son of Russell M. and Mary M. Whaley Sexton.
He is survived by his parents, Russell M. and Mary M. Sexton of Galesburg, a son, Tyler Blake Sexton of Galesburg, a brother, Jeff (and Monica) Sexton of Plainwell, MI, a sister, Sarah (and Craig Williams) Sexton of Galesburg, 3 nephews, Jeffrey and Kyle Sexton and Craig Williams, and 4 nieces, Shannon, Hayleigh, and Emma Sexton and Sariah Williams.
Matt was a machinist at John Deere Company for the past 2 years. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1992 and attended Carl Sandburg College. He lived in Galesburg his entire life. He was baptized in the Catholic faith. He enjoyed cars and motorcycles.
Funeral will be 11 AM Monday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. David Parker will officiate. Visitation will be 3 to 5 PM Sunday at the chapel. Mrs. Louise H. Johnson, Galesburg Chapel

93, formerly of 537 N. Kellogg St., Galesburg died at 1:40 AM Friday April 25, 2008 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born November 3, 1914 in Monmouth, IL to her parents, Swedish immigrants, John A. and Ida Mae Johnson Hallberg. She married Erick R. Johnson in Rock Island, IL on December 15, 1933. He preceded her in death on December 1, 1998.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold, Raymond, Russell and Kenneth Hallberg and two sisters, Evelyne Lindquist and Matiel Hallberg.
She was a secretary for the former Galesburg Cigar Company. She graduated from Galesburg High School. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and a member of the Service of Love.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11 AM Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Johnson will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church. Mr. Charles Kenneth Stegall, Galesburg Chapel

He was born July 25, 1915 in Delong, IL, the son of Charles M. and Nora Brown Stegall. He married Esther M. Marks on November 12, 1938 in Elmwood, IL. He married Betty Wool Harshbarger on May 20, 1978 in Galesburg. They both preceded him in death.
He is survived by a brother, Rex Stegall of Las Vegas, NV and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Floyd M. Stegall, a sister, Doris Bushnell, and a nephew, Rick Stegall.
He worked as a lead inspector for the former Admiral Corporation in Galesburg for 29 years. He retired in 1982. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1933. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He lived in the Abingdon and Galesburg areas most of his life. He will be dearly missed.
Graveside service will be 10:30 AM Saturday in Abingdon Cemetery. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Visitation will be 9 to 10 AM Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Mrs. Maxine Marie Pitman, Galesburg Chapel

95, formerly of 2926 Lincoln Park Drive, Galesburg, died at 3:42 AM Thursday, April 24, 2008 in the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville.
She was born December 2, 1912 in Osawotmie, KS, the daughter of George and Edna Fuhrman Ronk. She married Dale M. Pitman on January 4, 1936 in Sarasota, FL. He preceded her in death on January 25, 1997.
She is survived by 3 grandchildren, JoVann (and Wil) Azer, Galesburg, Annette Pitman, Galesburg, and Richard (and Jolene) Pitman, Alexis, IL, 4 great grandchildren, Josh (and Lori) Johnson, Decatur, IL, Maggie Johnson, Champaign, IL, Jennifer (and Leif) Erickson, Galesburg, and Amanda Pitman, Galesburg, 2 great great grandsons, Jack Erickson and Brady Johnson, and a daughter-in-law, Karen Pitman, Alexis. She was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Pitman in 1985, a brother, and a sister.
Maxine was a homemaker who lived in the Alexis area for over 40 years. She attended Galesburg High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Galesburg and its Robert Coates Circle. She was also a member of the Elkettes.
Graveside service will be 12 noon Saturday in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, North Henderson, IL. The Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. There will be no visitation. He was born April 29, 1918 in Montague, Mass., the son of William J. and Lilly Ellison Parnell. He married Frances Watson on April 7, 1944 in Galesburg.
He is survived by his wife, Frances of Galesburg, a daughter, Suzanne McCraw of Columbia, SC, and 2 grandsons, Jason (and Karen) Hartwig of Eugene, OR and Jared Hartwig of Clemson, SC. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters.
David was a salesman for Willis Steel in Galesburg from 1951 until retiring in 1987. He was raised in Springfield, Mass. and graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1937. He graduated from Brown and Sharp Trade School in Providence, RI in 1939 as a mechanical draftsman. He had lived in Galesburg since 1946.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. He served in the United States Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946 and was stationed in Europe.
Cremation will be accorded. Memorial graveside service will be 2 PM Friday, April 25, 2008 in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. David Parker will officiate. Mrs. Dorothy L. Johnson, Abingdon Chapel

She was born on March 2, 1919 near Oneida in Knox County, IL, the daughter of Fred and Judith Norberg Nelson. She graduated from Altona High School with the class of 1936. She married Arnold Johnson on September 3, 1937. He preceded her in death on February 12, 1990. Also preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters and three brothers.
Before retiring, she was employed by Nelson Vending Company in Galesburg, IL. She had lived in Abingdon since 1984 and prior to that in Galesburg. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Galesburg.
Surviving is a daughter, Carol (and John) Emerick of Abingdon, three grandchildren, Shelly (and Scot) Lehmann of Japan, John (and Jen) Emerick of Macomb, IL and Jeff (and Julie) Emerick of RR Abingdon; 7 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be at 10:00 am Friday, April 25, 2008 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Rev. Dr. Tom Larsen will officiate. Burial will be in Oneida Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday at the chapel.
