Jean H. Engberg, Galesburg Chapel

She was born March 6, 1914 in Galesburg, the daughter of Titus G. and Edith Larson Engberg. Surviving are her sister, Barbara E. Lunden of Galesburg, and a number of close friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Herman Engberg and a brother-in-law, Clarence Lunden.
Jean graduated from Knoxville High School in 1932 and received her Registered Nurse degree from Galesburg Cottage Hospital in 1935. She was a member of ANA and the Cottage Hospital Alumni Association. She worked in the Galesburg area during most of her career, retiring from the Galesburg Clinic in 1989. She was in fellowship with a Christian Brethren Assembly in Knoxville.
Funeral service will be 1:30 PM Tuesday September 30, 2008 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery.

Mrs. Ramona M. Orozco, Galesburg Chapel

She was born February 1, 1933 in Versailles, IL the daughter of M. Kenneth and Glenna Root Herren. She married William R. Boydstun in 1948. She later married Maximino Orozco in Moline, IL on April 22, 1978. He preceded her in death on October 4, 2004.
She is survived by one son, Daniel M. Orozco of Galesburg; three daughters, Ramona Jane (and Terry) Smith of Abingdon, Julie Bohn of Lexington Park, Maryland, and Aurora Herbolshiemer of San Antonio, TX; one sister, Susan Hendrickson of Morning Sun, IA, fourteen grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, William R. Boydstun Jr., one brother, and one sister.
She worked as an inspector for Maytag Corporation for 30 years, retiring in 1995. She was a Union Steward for several years for Local Union 2097. She was a member of the AARP. She was a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing the organ, piano and singing. She loved flowers and gardening, crafts, hiking, rock hounding and caring for her dogs.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Presley will officiate. She was born November 1, 1914 in Galva, IL to Clyde E. and Violet Binge Alderman. She married Donald G. Sedgwick October 23, 1933 in Chicago, IL. He preceded her in death on January 11, 1994.
Surviving are 4 sons, Gary (wife Lynne) Sedgwick of Lemoore, CA, Jon (wife Barbara) Sedgwick of Naples, FL, Ted (wife Natalie) Sedgwick of Galesburg, and Walter Sedgwick of Galesburg, 5 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Walter E. Alderman.
Nellie was a homemaker. She was a member and very active in the Faith United Methodist Church, Galesburg. She served as trustee and was on numerous other committees of her church. She held state and district offices in United Methodist Women Missionary Work. She was the secretary for the Church Women United. Nellie was a member of O.A.K.S., P.T.A. and B.N. Veterans Auxiliary. She was an avid sports fan and Chicago Cubs fan. She was a Galesburg High graduate.

Mrs. Dorothy Mary (Naum) Parker, Galesburg Chapel

She was born January 5, 1928 in Dearborn, MI, the daughter of Mary and James Naum. She married W.R. (Ron) Parker on October 10, 1953 in Angola, IN, who preceded her in death July 28, 1995.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Stella Grey and brothers, Henry and James Naum. She is survived by sons, Robert W. Parker (Fran) of Phoenix, and R. Craig Parker of Galesburg. She is also survived by granddaughters, Tiffani D. Patrick and Lindsey C. Parker, both of San Francisco.
A Galesburg resident since 1958, “Dottie” was a proud member of “A League of Their Own”, the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, which was enshrined as an organization into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY in 1993.
She played for the Kalamazoo Lassies, the South Bend Blue Sox and the Kenosha Comets in a career that spanned 1946-1953, when she retired to marry Ron and start her family.
Playing her early years as a catcher/infielder, she blossomed later as a pitcher, posting an astounding career earned run average of 2.01 between 1950 and 1953.
She hit the only home run of her career in the final game she played, a 2-1 playoff victory for Kalamazoo in September 1953. She was also the winning pitcher.
An avid golfer throughout her life, she participated in numerous Galesburg All-City Championships. Her other hobbies included bowling, knitting and needlepoint, playing bridge and watching sports, especially the NBA.
She was a former member of the Greek Orthodox Church. She was much loved and will be missed by her friends, family and little dog Lexi. She will forever roam the playing fields of heaven.
Funeral services will be 1 PM Friday, September 26, 2008 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. David Parker will officiate. The family will receive friends following the funeral at the chapel. Cremation will be accorded following the funeral with a private family burial on Monday in East Linwood Cemetery. Mrs. Eleanor O. Henry, Galesburg Chapel

93, formerly of 707 S. Chambers St., Galesburg died at 5:56 AM Tuesday September 23, 2008 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
She was born June 18, 1915 in Galesburg the daughter of E. Arnold and Freda Johnson Swanson. She married Lester L. Henry in St. Charles, MO on September 26, 1942. He preceded her in death on August 16, 1989.
She is survived by one daughter, Lynnea L. Huddle of Galesburg; one brother, Harland Swanson of Galesburg, two grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Eleanor worked for Danner’s Fremont Bakery for 6 years, retiring in 1978. She lived in Galesburg her entire life. She was a former member of First Church of the Open Bible.

Mr. Ronald C. Simonson, Galesburg Chapel

73, of 715 S. Gilson St., Knoxville, IL died at 3:51 AM Tuesday September 23, 2008 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born May 22, 1935 in Montclair, NJ the son of Carroll and Winifred Cole Simonson. He married Lora Goulding on September 22, 1981 in Port Byron, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Scott and Nicholas Simonson, both of Knoxville; one daughter, Stephanie Simonson of Knoxville; and one sister, Virginia Gill of Seattle, WA.
He worked as a laborer for Local #538 in Galesburg for many years. He served in the US Marine Corp for four years earning the rank of Sgt. He graduated from high school in Newport News, VA in 1953. He loved to play baseball and enjoyed gardening.

She was born July 22, 1918 in Gilson, IL, the daughter of John and Gwendolyn Benjamin Stevens. She married Burl A. Anderson on August 10, 1937 in Davenport, IA. He preceded her in death on December 20, 1986.
She is survived by 2 sons, Burl (and Rita) Anderson, Jr. of Galesburg and Wendell (and Rose) Anderson of Centennial, CO, a daughter, Penny (and Richard) Gerald of Erie, IL, 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and a sister, Mary Walter of Hot Springs, AR. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Roxane was a nurse’s aide for 22 years, working for local hospitals as well as working independently. She attended Wataga High School. She was a past member of the former Pilgrim Holiness Church, where she was the Sunday school superintendent, a Sunday school teacher, and the missionary president. She attended First Bible Missionary Church in Galesburg. She visited local nursing homes and held religious services.

He was born March 7, 1926 in Avon, IL, the son of Frank W. and Bessie VanVelsor Woods.
He is survived by his wife, Candace, 4 children, Elaine (and Bob) Morefield of Shelbyville, IL, Edwin (and Bonnie) Woods of Mackinaw, IL, Tracy (and Rodney) Neuendorf of Cuba, IL, and Warren (and Jeanne Rae) Woods of San Jose, CA, 6 step children, Todd Doyle of South Korea, Tammy (and Darren) Poland of Abingdon, IL, Paula Hendrickson of Little York, IL, Walt Howard of Wataga, IL, Lynn Anderson of Grayslake, IL, and Lori (and Denny) Jackson of Toulon, IL, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Lewis farmed along with his family in the Avon area until 1965. He later owned and operated Lou’s Transmission Service in Galesburg for 25 years. He graduated from Avon High School. He attended Messiah Lutheran Church in Henderson Grove and was a member of the Antique Motorcycle Club.

Mrs. Barbara D. Gibbs, Galesburg Chapel

78 of Galesburg, died at 3:00 AM Saturday September 20, 2008 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born September 22, 1929 in Fairfield, IA the daughter of Hugh and Sarah Schwab Ward. She married Willard E. Gibbs on April 1, 1951. He passed away on September 25, 1969.
She is survived by one son, Greg (and Cathy) Gibbs of Knoxville, IL; one daughter, Sandra (and William) Burkett of Bristol, TN; one grandson, Casey Gibbs of Knoxville; two step granddaughters, Tiffany Couch of Bristol, VA and Donna Rosenbalm of Bristol, TN, and two step great grandsons, Greg Burkett and Dominic Ashkettle, both of Bristol, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
She was raised in Fort Madison, IA. She graduated from Fort Madison High School. She also graduated from Cottage Hospital School of Nursing. She worked for several years at Cottage Hospital and later at the Medical Arts Clinic. She retired in 1994. She loved animals, enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching TV.
Private family graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. She was born August 4, 1918 in Gillam, AR, the daughter of Harve and Nell Sherwood Mize. She married Edward Ray in 1933 in Broken Bow, OK. He preceded her in death in 1951. She then married Richard D. Nelson, Sr. on December 12, 1952 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on August 14, 2002.
She is survived by 4 sons, James (and Patty) Ray of Cameron, IL, Willard Ray of Knoxville, Edward (and Vicky) Ray of Knoxville, and Rick Nelson of Ft. Myers, FL, 4 daughters, Rita Hillman of Galesburg, Wanda (and Bob) Harvey of East Galesburg, Ann Gebert of Gilson, IL, and Brenda Nelson of Phoenix, AZ, 19 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and 18 great great grandchildren, 2 brothers, Keith Mize and Gene Mize, both of Phoenix, and a sister, Verla Boozel of Phoenix. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
