Mrs. Annie Pearl Sutton Strange, Galesburg Chapel

She was born March 15, 1924 in Jackson, Mississippi, the daughter of Ben and Annie Pearl Hamilton Sutton. She married James Ewing Strange on May 6, 1957 in Monmouth, IL. He preceded her in death.
She is survived by a sister, Vera Terrell of Jackson, Mississippi and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 6 brothers, and 4 sisters.
Annie worked at the former Galesburg Mental Health Center for 14 years, retiring in 1984. She was a former member of the Second Baptist Church in Galesburg.
Graveside services will be 11 AM Thursday, October 30, 2008 in East Linwood Cemetery. The Rev. Lugene Finley, Sr. will officiate. There will be no visitation. Mr. Bernard James “Barney” Teval, Galesburg Chapel

He was born August 3, 1931 in Galesburg the son of Samuel P. and Marie England Teval. He married Gwenlee V. Sampson in Edina, MO on July 15, 1952. She survives.
Also surviving is one son, Charles (Wendy) Teval of Stockton, CA; three daughters, Patricia Varner of Altona, IL, Sharon (Mike) Malmrose and Theresa (John) Ring, both of Galesburg; one sister, Mary (James) Shaver of Galesburg; six grandchildren, Nichole Varner (Kyle Batterson) of Wataga, IL, Andrew (Sara) Varner of Oneida, IL, Matthew (Tracy) Varner of Altona, IL, Sam Malmrose and Emma Ring, both of Galesburg and Lorien Teval of Stockton, CA; two step grandchildren, Joey and Justin Saar both of Stockton, CA, five great grandchildren, and a cousin, Jim Rittenhouse of Yates City, IL. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, John Teval in March 2001 and one son-in-law, Andrew Varner in February 2001.
He served in the Army stationed in Korea.
He was a firefighter for the Galesburg Fire Department. He also worked for Hi Lo Grocery. He retired from both in 1983. He was a 1949 graduate from Galesburg High School. He was a member of the Retired Fire Fighters Association. He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Monday, October 27, 2008 in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Presley officiating. The Rosary will be prayed at 5:00 PM Sunday, October 26, 2008 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel where visitation will follow until 7:30 PM. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 Honor Squad. Miss Sherry Lee Skanberg, Galesburg Chapel

59, 239 S. Cherry St., Galesburg, died at 1:38 AM Wednesday, October 22, 2008 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
She was born May 29, 1949 in Chicago, the daughter of Carl and Evelyn May Matlock Skanberg.
Funeral will be 1 PM Friday, October 24, 2008 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. David Kramer will officiate. Visitation will be 12:30 to 1 PM Friday at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery.

Mr. Charles Donald Roudebush, Abingdon Chapel

obit_us_flag.jpg84, a resident of the Gainesville Health and Rehabilitation Center, Gainesville, Virginia, and formerly of Abingdon, IL died on Sunday, October 19, after suffering numerous health problems, including a broken hip. Mr. Roudebush was born on July 30, 1924, in Rushville, Illinois, to Dallas A. and Mary Thompson Roudebush. The family moved to Abingdon in 1927. He is survived by his sister, Doris (Mrs. Eugene) Black of Gainesville, Virginia. One sister, Marjorie Lou, died in infancy. He leaves also a nephew, Joel E. D. Black of Herndon, Virginia, a niece, Mary Eve (Mrs. Michael) Iwicki of Gaithersburg, MD, and her children, Michael Dallas and Marianne Sophia.

After graduating with the Abingdon High School Class of 1942, he spent three years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II, serving in both the European and Far Eastern Theaters of War. He was a 62-year member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. After his discharge from the Army, he attended Western Illinois State College in Macomb, earning his B.S. Ed. in business education in 1950 and his M.S. Ed. in 1952.

Mr. Roudebush taught high school business education in Bluffs, Illinois, before completing his education and moving to Washington, D. C. in 1952. There he worked for both the U.S. Department of the Army and Department of the Navy as a budget analyst, retiring in 1980.

Don, as he liked to be called, was a devout Christian and a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. After retirement, he served the church as an assistant treasurer. He was a voracious reader, a lover of opera, and fond of animals, especially cats. Don very generously contributed to many charities. His giving fed the hungry, aided the poor, sponsored orphans in other countries, and placed Bibles in the hands of those who had none.

He was devoted to his sister Doris and to her grown children, who will miss their Uncle Don very much.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 24, 2008 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Graveside service will be at 11:30 am Friday at the Abingdon Cemetery, where Mr. Roudebush will be laid to rest beside his parents. Mr. Harold D. Potter, Galesburg Chapel

94, 144 S. Arthur Ave., Galesburg, died at 2:30 PM Friday, October 17, 2008 in Marigold Health Care Center.
He was born February 26, 1914 in Maquon, IL, the son of Alvin D. and Iva Simkins Potter. He married Helen Schmidt on December 17, 1938 in Burlington, IA. She preceded him in death on January 13, 1999.
He is survived by 3 daughters, Kay St. George, Jane (and Ronald) Phillips, and Chery (and William) Phillips, all of Galesburg, a brother, Glenn Potter of Galesburg, and 2 sisters, Eloise Hanson of Knoxville, IL and Ilene Gawthrop of Galesburg, 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jim Potter, 3 brothers, a sister, a grandson, Bryan Shipley, and a great granddaughter, Paige Phillips.
Harold was raised in the Maquon area and has lived in Galesburg since 1957. He was a laborer for Butler Manufacturing Company and the Admiral Corporation. He was also a farmer and raised horses.
Graveside service will be 2 PM Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Kurt Carlsen will officiate. There will be no visitation. Mr. Charles G. Peck, Abingdon Chapel

Charles was born March 12, 1923 in Delong, IL the son of Clyde and Mildred Ferris Peck. He married Doras C. Williams of Galesburg on March 10, 1943 in Syracuse, NY. She survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Tyson (Janet) of Denver, CO, Thomas (Becky) of Colona, IL and Ronald (Mary) of Galesburg, IL; eight grandchildren, Jodie Moisant, Christopher Peck of Chicago IL, Jenna Zawadowski and Matt Peck of Denver, CO, Troy Peck of Bloomington, IL, Drew Peck of St. Louis, MO, Andrew Peck of Chicago, IL and Cougar Peck of Galesburg; five great grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren.
Charles was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church for over 50 years and served as chairperson of the board for 2 years. He was a member of Abingdon Rotary Club for over 40 years where he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the Abingdon School Board, drove the Abingdon Senior Citizens van and volunteered at the Galesburg Orpheum Theater for 14 years.
He was a Metropolitan Life Insurance Salesman for 20 years. He retired on a disability at the age of 60. He then worked for Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Home in Abingdon for 15 years.
He enlisted in the World War II Air Force and served for 3 years. His wife, Doras, worked at Douglas Aircraft in Chicago while he served overseas.
Charles was a loving husband for 65 years, a devoted dad, granddad and great granddad. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Monday October 20, 2008 in the Abingdon United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paul D. Dinges will officiate. Mrs. Judith E. “Judy” Poplett, Galesburg Chapel

66, 742 W. Berrien St., Galesburg, died at 7:38 PM Wednesday, October 15, 2008 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
She was born September 7, 1942 in Galesburg, the daughter of Harry A. and Hazel M. Talley Magee. She married Theodore “Ted” Poplett on August 21, 1976 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on September 22, 1997.
She is survived by 3 sons, Ronald Quinn and Cory Poplett, both of Shreveport, LA, and David Poplett of Indianapolis, IN, 2 daughters, Ronda (and Ronnie) Spicher and Lisa (and Dave) Munson, both of Galesburg, 19 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and a brother, Ronald Magee of Galesburg. She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters.
Judy was a bartender at the Silver Front for over 30 years. She attended Galesburg High School and had lived her entire life here. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. She was a former member of the Ladies of the Moose and the American Legion Auxiliary. Judy was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Graveside service will be 1 PM Saturday, October 18, 2008 in St. Joseph Cemetery. The Rev. Joseph Presley will officiate. There will be no visitation. Mr. Andrew William Main, Galesburg Chapel

He was born May 17, 1933 in Altona, IL, the son of Everett and Helen (Anderson) Main. He graduated from R.O.V.A. High School in 1951.
Andy and Marilyn (Carlson) were married in Altona at the Altona Presbyterian Church on November 14, 1954 by the Rev. Kermit Petersen.
He served in the 4th Army Anti-Aircraft and Guided Missile School at Fort Bliss, TX from September 1953 to October 1955. After his military service, he returned to the Altona area to farm west of Altona, and continued until his passing. He founded O.T. Farms and was a member of the AnKe Farming Group and RACK Farms.
Andy worked for the JI Case Company in the Optimum Tillage (O.T.) Division for many years.
He held many patents with JI Case Company, inventing a chisel planter and consulted on many other projects throughout his life.
Andy was an avid tractor puller. He was one of the original founding members of the National Tractor Pullers Association; he served as officer and board member for many years. He was National Tractor Pullers “Puller of the Year” in 1978 and he received the Lyle Bishman Award for outstanding dedication and service to the sport in 1983. He was inducted into the National Tractor Pullers Hall of Fame in 1998. He also was a founding member and officer in the North American Sled Owners Association. He served for many years and traveled many miles inspecting tractor pulling sleds for mechanical operation and safety throughout North America and Europe.
He also served as Mayor of Oneida from 1979 to 1981. He was an active member in the ROWVA FFA Alumni Association and was awarded the Royal Litchfield Memorial Award for Outstanding Alumni. He was a member of the Rio Presbyterian Church and a member of the former Ontario Congregational Church.
Surviving are his wife of Rio, a daughter, Andrea (and Bill) Cawthon of Galesburg, 3 sons, Bill (and Maureen) Main of Bainbridge Island, WA, Randy Main of Woodhull, and Rodney (and Trisha) Main of Oneida, a daughter-in-law, Mary Leann Main of Oneida, and 7 grandchildren, Catherine Butler of Galesburg, Philip and Jonathan Main of Bainbridge Island, WA, Charles Main of Oneida, and Taylor, Ethan, and Maddox Main of Oneida.
Memorial service will be 1 PM Saturday, October 18, 2008 in the Rio Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Cheyanna L. Losey will officiate. The family will greet friends during a luncheon following the service. Memorials may be made to the ROWVA FFA and Alumni in care of the Andrew Main Memorial Fund. Mrs. Ethel M. Sunderland, Galesburg Chapel

age 91, of Annandale, Mn. formerly of Crystal, died Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Buffalo Hospital.
Visitation will be held Tuesday evening at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Annandale. Visitation will also be one hour prior to Funeral Services held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 16 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel, Galesburg, IL. Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg.
Ethel Marion Sunderland was born July 7, 1917 in Galesburg, IL to Ossian & Beda (Karlsson) Linner. She married William Sunderland on December 30, 1934 in Rozetta, Illinois and he preceded her in death on November 3, 1977. She was a homemaker and did nametag engraving work from her home. She was a former member of Elim Lutheran Church, Robbinsdale and enjoyed playing bingo & casino games.
She is survived by her two sons, Jack & his wife Phyllis of South Haven, Gerry of St. Michael; 4 grandchildren, Charlotte, James, Terry, & Samantha; and 6 great grandchildren, Holli, Michael, Amber, Garrett, Nicholas, & Zachary. She was preceded in death by her husband, and infant sister, and sisters, Lillian Lewis & Mae Hopping. The arrangements were entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care and Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel.
