Mrs. H. Maurine “Babe” Carlson, Galesburg Chapel

age 98 of 926 Florence Ave., Galesburg, IL died at 2:45AM Monday April 27, 2009 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
She was born September 2, 1910 in Burlington, IA the daughter of Robert W. and Maude A. Hartman Dunlap. She married C. Russell Carlson in Chicago, IL on September 2, 1936. He preceded her in death December 19, 2007.
Maurine is survived by one sister, Dorothy M. Willer of Galesburg, numerous nephews and nieces, numerous great nephews and nieces, and numerous great great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by one sister, Marian Bennett and two nephews.
She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1929, attended Lombard College, and graduated from Western Illinois University in 1931. She resided in Freeport, Aurora, and Galesburg. She also taught school in the Galesburg school system for six years. Maurine was a member of the East Main Congregational United Church of Christ. She was also a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority and La Society de La Femme. She was an avid Bears and Cubs fan, and loved nature and crafts.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday April 30, 2009 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Robert Eshleman officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Christian School Library Fund.

Mrs. D. Wanda Blickem, Galesburg Chapel

Born November 12, 1919 in Cowden, IL to Addie and Mildred Torrence Brown, she married V. Joe Blickem, Sr. on December 11, 1942 in Shelbyville, IL. He preceded her in death on June 25, 2005.
Wanda’s daughters and their families were her caregivers: Mary and Bill Higgins of Knoxville and Linda and Jeff Feely of Wataga. Their children include Will Higgins of Knoxville (with daughter Alyssa); Teresa and Max McNeeley (with son Bryce) of Monmouth; Jay and Tricia Feely (with children Katie, Lauren, Christopher, Allison and Emma) of Galesburg; Matt and Amy Feely of Cleveland, IL; Tim and Meghann Feely of Little Port, UK; and Jim Feely of Springfield, Virginia.
Preceding Wanda in death were two sons, William E. Blickem (in 2004) and V. Joe Blickem, Jr. (in 2008). Surviving are Joe’s daughters: Lorrie and Kevin Lawson of Henderson, NV, (with children Shanie and Samantha, and grandson Nathaniel) and Tammie Blickem of Wataga (with children Kylie and Chloe).
Also surviving is one son, Norman and Jo Blickem of Knoxville and family.
Wanda had 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great great grandson. Preceding Wanda in death were two brothers.
A 1937 graduate of Cowden High School, she had fun attending the high school reunions in later years. She had lived in Knoxville since 1956.
Family and friends brought Wanda joy – everyone remembers her sweet, easy smile, laughter, and great cooking. She enjoyed dogs, flower gardening, watching soap operas, collecting antiques, and watching birds at the backyard feeders. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, she and her husband owned and operated The Olde Oak Shoppe in Knoxville. She was of Methodist faith.
Some of Wanda’s longtime friends are Rama Danielson, Mike Grady, Marilyn Clayton, Pearl Strickland, Loretta O’Connor and Francis Winebrenner.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Galesburg, with the Rev. Lee Johnson officiating. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Knoxville cemetery.

Mrs. Cynthia Ann Siems, Galesburg Chapel

She was born February 27, 1951 in Burlington, IA, the daughter of Carl Andrew and Tessie Dodd Bergquist. She married Daniel R. Siems on July 17, 1971 in Burlington.
Surviving is her husband, Rev. Daniel R. Siems, her mother, Tessie Dodd Bergquist of Burlington, 3 daughters, Heather (and Kevin) Olson of Galesburg, Christy (and Timothy) Komenda of Springville, NY, and Heidi (and Matthew) Eckhardt of Iowa City, IA, a son, Andrew (and Brooke) Siems of Detroit, MI, 7 grandchildren, and 2 sisters, Deborah (and Rodney) Wittkamp and Robin (and David) York, both of Burlington. She was preceded in death by her father.
Cindy was a wonderful wife and homemaker of 37 years, a loving mother, and grandmother. She continuously demonstrated her creative abilities in everything she did. Her watercolor and ink house portraits adorn many homes. She was an active member of all the churches she and Dan served using her musical talents in singing and playing the flute, as well as using her artistic talents in creating various art projects. She most recently was a member of First Baptist Church of Galesburg
Graveside service will be 9:30 AM Monday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Memorial service will be at 11 AM Monday at the First Baptist Church in Galesburg. The family will officiate. Mr. John R. Emery, Galesburg Chapel

He was born April 23, 1932 in Stark County, IL the son of James Patrick and Florence Barlow Emery. He married Betty M. Smith on December 6, 1952 in Monmouth, IL. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Bob (Polly) Emery of Knoxville and Steve (Dana) Emery of Wesley Chapel, FL; one daughter, Becky (Dewey) Collins of Galesburg; ten grandchildren, Karla (Sean) Hanlon, Shawna Emery, Tera (Paul) Klein, Joshua (Alicia) Powelson, Michelle Collins, Brittany Collins, Chris Emery, Carson Emery, Carly Peterson and Delaney Emery; seven great grandchildren, Emma Hanlon, Jacob Hanlon, Angelina Sargeant, Derrick Sargeant, JR., Jenna Barry, Alyssa Barry and Emery Powelson; three brothers and two sisters.
He served in the US Army in Korea from 1952-1954.
He worked as an agent for Prudential Insurance for 34 years, retiring on June 23, 1996. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1950. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a Past President and Board member of K.C.C.D.D. for 10 years. He coached Y.M.C.A. Boys basketball. He was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. He was an avid Silver Streaks fan and sports enthusiast. He was very active with his grandchildren’s school activities and sports functions. He was a devoted father, grandfather and husband.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 PM Monday April 27, 2009 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Michel Clark will officiate. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday evening at the chapel. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Mrs. Helen I. Kindhart, Galesburg Chapel

90, formerly of 1600 W. Main St., Galesburg, died at 4:43 AM Wednesday, April 22, 2009 in Seminary Manor.
She was born March 10, 1919 in Monmouth, IL, the daughter of George and Mary Renaker Voeller. She married Raymond L. Kindhart on October 17, 1947 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on February 24, 1989.
She is survived by a nephew, George T. “Terry” Voeller of East Galesburg, a niece, Beverly (and Loren) Edwards of Silvis, IL and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 4 sisters.
Helen was a supervisor at Protexall in Galesburg for 30 years. She retired in 1978. She graduated from Monmouth High School. She had lived in Galesburg most of her life. Helen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was the Noble Grand of Vesta Rebekah Lodge #29.

Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth “Liz” Hirshfield, Galesburg Chapel

94, formerly of 2153 Sodhi Ave., Galesburg, died at 1:28 AM Wednesday, April 22, 2009 in Seminary Manor.
She was born January 4, 1915 in Kirkwood, IL, the daughter of Nels P. and Nelina Strand Benson. She married Theodore Lloyd “Ted” Hirshfield on January 12, 1940 in Davenport, IA. He preceded her in death on May 6, 2001.
She is survived by 2 sons, Steven (and Joanne) Hirshfield of Albuquerque, NM and Curtis (and Kathy) Hirshfield of Galesburg, 6 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Ann Ralls, a brother, and 3 sisters.
Liz was a homemaker. She attended Monmouth High School and lived in Monmouth until her marriage in 1940. She then lived in Galesburg until 1969, when she moved to Champaign. Liz returned to Galesburg in 2001. She was of the Lutheran faith and had been a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Champaign.
Graveside service will be 1:30 PM Friday in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Dr. Tom Larsen will officiate. Visitation will be noon to 1:15 PM Friday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. She was born July 8, 1947 in Galesburg to Robert M. and Sadie E. Rigg Lamb. She married Eddie H. Keller, Sr. July 13, 1968 in Galesburg.
Surviving is her mother, Sadie E. Lamb of Galesburg, her faithful ex-husband, Eddie Keller, Sr. of Galesburg, a son, Eddie H. Keller, Jr. of Galesburg, 3 daughters, Andrea S. (and Drake) Hilligoss, Melissa A. Keller and Stephanie J. Keller, all of Galesburg, 3 brothers, Robert G. (and Kathy) Lamb, Jeffrey A. (and Vickie) Lamb and Albert E. Lamb, all of Galesburg, a sister, Sue (and Larry) Fitzanko of Galesburg, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her father and a brother.
Caroline was a waitress for the Kozy Inn, north of Galesburg for several years. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1965. She loved game shows and playing cards with family and friends.

Mr. Richard Lee Miles, Galesburg Chapel

He was born March 7, 1938 in Abingdon, IL, the son of H. Dale and Mayme D. Poole Miles. He married M. Joann Anderson on July 17, 1962 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Barbara Sue (and William) McNeeley of Galesburg, 4 grandchildren, Christopher, Kimberley Peck, Cody, and Kayleigh, a great grandson, Benjamyn, a brother, Jim Miles of Galesburg, and 2 sisters, Donna Cooley and Patricia Miles, both of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Bryon Scott Miles in November of 1986 and a brother, William.
Richard started working as a mechanic for Hagberg-Thede in 1955 and for Hutchcoft Implement in 1960. In 1965 he went to work for Sampson Implement as a mechanic and service manager. The dealership later became Kleine Equipment. He worked there as a salesman and later a courier after retirement completing 52 years of service with John Deere. He had lived in the Galesburg area his entire life. He as of the Methodist faith and had served as a member of the Warren County Hope Cemetery board.
Richard was a master craftsman in woodworking, making many items including fine furniture.
He served in the United States Army Reserves for 6 years.

Mr. Charles W. Esely, Galesburg Chapel

age 78 of 815 N. Cherry St., Galesburg, IL died at 9:45 PM Friday April 17, 2009 at Heartland Health Care Center.
He was born July 14, 1930 in Macomb, IL the son of Fred and Marie Holt Esely. He married Elizabeth Goff on October 5, 1950 in Cambridge, IL. She preceded him in death on August 10, 2003.
He is survived by two daughters, Judy (and the late Clifford) Clark and Mary Swank (and Herb Lewis), both of Galesburg, 6 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Esely and one sister, Esther Dunavin.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1949 and later worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as a switchman for 45 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be 1:30 PM Wednesday April 22, 2009 at East Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 12 noon to 1 PM at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Galesburg Railroad Museum.

Mr. William R. Turner, Galesburg Chapel

He was born September 24, 1921 in Bloomington, IN, the son of William A. and Ethel S. Trimble Turner. He married Mary Jane Harper on June 9, 1946 in Sharpsville, IN. She survives.
Also surviving are 2 sons, Douglas (and Rita) Turner of Springfield, IL and Phillip (and Clemencia) Turner of Kewanee, IL, 5 grandchildren, David, Christopher, Robin Marie, Ruhiyyeh, and Khalil, 6 great grandchildren, Taylor Deeann, Jacob, Amy, Alexis, Nathaniel, and Caleb, and a sister, Betty Lou Walsman of Indianapolis, IN. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen Buss and a great grandson, William Edward Turner.
William was a Spanish and French teacher at Galesburg High School for 31 years, retiring in 1978. While there, he instituted the modern language laboratory and started the Spanish National Honor Society. William was a member and past treasurer for the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in the State of Illinois. He also was a part time driver for Option Care Pharmacy for 7 years.
He graduated from Maryville (TN) High School in 1939. He attended J.B. Stetson University in Deland, FL for 3 years and graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in 1943 and a master’s degree in 1953. He also attended Sorbonne University in Paris while in the military.
William was a member of the Masonic Lodge while living in Indiana and had lived in Galesburg since 1947. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 60 years since 1947, where he served as a church elder, trustee, member of the chancel choir, and was a Sunday school teacher for 10 years.
William served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. He was stationed in Europe.
Funeral will be 10:30 AM Wednesday in the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. David Parker will officiate. Visitation will be 5 to 7 PM Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.
