Mrs. Rosalie Warren, Galesburg Chapel

87, 1335 Frank St., Galesburg, died at 3:55 AM Friday, May 29, 2009 at home.
She was born March 19, 1922 in Normal, IL, the daughter of John and Marie Jewel Brenning. She married George Edward Warren on January 8, 1949 in Peoria. He survives.
Also surviving are 4 sons, Roger (and Mary) Warren of Kiawah Island, SC, Robert (and Tricia) Warren of Galesburg, Scott (and Jane) Warren of Galesburg, and Bradley (and Amy) Warren of Springfield, IL, 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and a brother, Warren Brenning in Washington state. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sydney Danielle Reeder, 3 brothers, and a sister.
Rosalie was a homemaker. She graduated from Peoria Manual High School. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Galesburg.
Cremation will be accorded. Memorial service will be 3 PM Sunday, May 31, 2009 in First Baptist Church of Galesburg. Rev. Daniel Siems and Rev. Curt Lipe will be participating. Mrs. Lois I. Dunn, Galesburg Chapel

She was born September 23, 1933 in Maquon, the daughter of Ray and Lucille Dalton German. She married Robert Dunn in 1949 in Rushville.
She is survived by 2 sons, Dan (and Linda) Dunn of Bethel, MO and Kirk (and Deborah) Dunn of Blue Springs, MO, her companion of 22 years, Wilbur Gaddis, whom lived with her, 7 grandchildren, a brother, Don (and Martha) German of Galesburg, and a half brother, Keith Carter of Galva, IL.
Lois was an instructor for KCCDD for 20 years, retiring in 2002. She graduated from Galva High School. She was a past member of the Dahinda United Methodist Church and attended Calvary Assembly of God Church in Galesburg. Lois loved gardening, flowers, fishing, crafting, NASCAR Racing, and being with her close friends. She had lived in Galesburg, Galva, and Dahinda.
Funeral will be 1:30 PM Saturday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Bob Malone will officiate. Visitation will be noon to 1:30 PM Saturday at the chapel. Mr. Gregory L. “Troll” VanSwearingen, Galesburg Chapel

51, 133 Lorraine Dr., Galesburg, died at 10:01 PM Friday, May 22, 2009 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born September 20, 1957 in LaSalle, IL, the son of Norman and Mary Swearingen. He married Carla Evans. He later married Lisa Kincaid on August 6, 1988 in Knoxville.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa, his mother, Mary Claudis of Sioux City, IA, 3 sons, Ben (and Megan Simpson) Swearingen of Galesburg, Randy Swearingen of Iowa City, IA, and Christopher (and Kayla) VanSwearingen of Kewanee, 3 daughters, Jamie VanSwearingen, Misty (and Chad Moore) VanSwearingen, and Amber VanSwearingen, all of Galesburg, 5 grandchildren, and many brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Swearingen, a daughter, Rebecca Swearingen, a brother, Norman “Butch” Swearingen, a sister, Sally Verway, and his best friend, Leonard Anderson.
Troll had worked for Jumer’s in housekeeping and also as a baker. He worked at Marigold Health Care Center along with his wife as a CNA. He attended culinary school and had a degree in psychology. He like to etch mirrors and spend time with his family.
Funeral will be 2 PM Thursday in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Jon Sibley will officiate. Visitation will be 1 to 2 PM Thursday at the chapel. Mr. Henry J. Pyell, Galesburg Chapel

He was born June 23, 1925 in Peoria, IL to Carl and Myra E. Adkinson Pyell. He married Barbara Jean Shaw July 5, 1954 in Pomona, CA. She preceded him in death in March of 1985.
Surviving is a son, Rev. David (and Linda) Pyell of Altona, IL, 2 step-sons, Randy Zeller of Westminister, CA and Tom (and Janney) Zeller of Diamond Bar, CA, a daughter, Lisa A. Blankers of Blue Springs, MO, a step-daughter, Cheryl (and Gary) Sumner of Nevada City, CA, and 9 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Henry worked in the diesel engine department at Caterpiller in Peoria for 10 years. He was an electronic engineer for General Dynamics in California for 38 years and retired in 1990.
He was raised in Castleton, IL, lived in Pomona, CA for 42 years and moved back to Galesburg in 1992. Later he moved to Blue Springs MO, for 2 years, Prophetstown, IL for 2 years and in 2009 he moved to Altona, IL.
He was in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945 serving in Normandy during World War II as a Pharmacist Mate on an LST.
He attended Wyoming High School, Wyoming, IL. In 1949 he graduated form DeVry Radio School in Deforrest, IL with a Radio and Television Engineering Degree. He later graduated from Mt. San Antonio College, CA with a Radar Engineering degree.
Henry was a member of the Antique Radio Club in southern California, VFW in Galesburg and a volunteer at the Vesper Hall in Blue Springs, MO.
He was of the Lutheran faith.
Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Thursday May 28, 2009 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. David Pyell and Rev. Jan Griffith officiating. Dr. James P. McCurry, Galesburg Chapel

He was born on October 3, 1943 in Hawthorne, CA to Arlie and Kathleen Bloomfield McCurry.
He is survived by his mother, Kathleen McCurry of Galesburg, a half brother, Mike McCurry and a half sister, Irene McCurry and cousins, Donald (and Jenean) Betz, Michelle (and Ron) Carrothers, and Michael (Kendra, Jacob and Justin) Betz.
He was a professor at Carl Sandburg College for 28 years, retiring in 2008. First teaching Developmental English, later he taught Freshman English, Poetry, Ethics and Philosophy.
He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1961 and Knox College, Summa Cum Laude, in 1965. He received a master’s degree from Colorado State University in 1974 and a doctorate from the University of Denver in 1985.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1970.
He was a member of the International Dyslexia Association (formerly the Orton Dyslexia Association) and the National Developmentally Disadvantaged Organization.
He was the editor of the literary magazine, Farmer’s Market. His poetry had been published in Annetna Nepo, Muse Apprentice Guild and Rio. Other publications appeared in Alba, Big City Lit, Cyber Oasis, Drought, Eleven Bulls, Fish Drum, Identity Theory, Tryst, Niederngasse, Poets Against the War, Snow Monkey Press, Zacatecas Review and Zuzu’s Petals Quarterly. Earlier credits include Quarterly West, the Writer’s Forum Gerard Manley Hopkins Prize in 1999 and the Illinois Arts Council prize. He loved Jazz and collected Jazz albums, he was a voracious reader, and he was a talented painter.
Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Rev. Dr. Tom Larsen officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Marianna (Pica) Tafuri, Abingdon Chapel

She was born on July 27, 1917 in Sant’ Arsenio, Italy to Arsenio and Margherita (Greco) Pica. She married Mario Tafuri on April 30, 1955 in Sant’ Arsenio, Italy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sisters and brothers.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was a seamstress and worked for Joe the Tailor retiring in 1985. She enjoyed gardening and flowers. She was a life long Roman Catholic and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary and was also a 3rd Order Carmelite.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 12:45 pm Friday, May 22, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abingdon followed by the Mass of Christian Burial. Father William Miller will be the Celebrant and Father Deus-Dedit B. Byabato will be the Concelebrant. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Mass Offerings may be made in her honor.

Mr. George R. “Bob” Hall, Galesburg Chapel

He was born May 31, 1920 in Galesburg to Harvey Matheu and Manda Jane Luttrell Hall. He married Mareda LaVerne Holloway on July 8, 1944 in Wichita, KS.
Surviving is his wife of nearly 65 years, 5 children, Mareda R. Hopping Davis of Morton, IL, Robert V. (and Zoila) Hall of Rio Rancho, NM, Dorothy J. Moats of Canton, IL, Asa R. (and Nora) Hall of Temple, TX and James E. (and Heidi) Hall of Pleasanton, CA a sister, Lula Connour of Rushville, 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lela Moore, a daughter Nancy E. Hall and a granddaughter Laura A. Hopping Dawson.
Bob was employed at Rowe Manufacturing Company in Galesburg for more than 33 years and retired from the Galesburg Mental Health Center. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1946.
He served in the 20th Air Force of the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, from Oct. 23, 1941 to Nov. 24, 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Service Star, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon, 2 Overseas Service Bars and the Victory Ribbon for his service on Tinian in the Mariana Islands. He was also awarded the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, the American Defense Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member of Knox County VFW Post 2257 Honor Guard. He was a member of Allen Park Baptist Church.
Funeral service will be 1:30 PM Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Visitation will be 12:30 – 1:30 PM Thursday at the chapel. Mrs. Patricia A. Smith (Christy), Galesburg Chapel

She was born June 11, 1943 in Galesburg, the daughter of Joseph and Frances Wilmont Talbert. She married Terry Christy in 1962 in Galesburg.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Wedell (and Lee Ham) of East Galesburg and Tracey (and Tracy) Butts of Knoxville, IL, and three grandchildren, Mitchell Wedell, Ethan Ham, and Justin Butts. She was preceded in death by her step father, George “Bus” Hale.
She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1961 and then worked in the Tie Down Assembly Line Department # 202 at Maytag Corp. for 31 years. She was a member of the I.A.M.A. Local # 2063. She loved to garden all types of flowers and plants and enjoyed the outdoors.
