Mrs. Lavonne H. Monson, Galesburg Chapel

98, a resident of Seminary Manor for 12 years, died there at 9:57 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009. She lived for 60 years at 999 Day St., Galesburg.
She was born November 4, 1910 in Galesburg, the daughter of Earl and Ruth E. (McClurg) Haskins.
She married Paul J. Monson on August 17, 1929, in Galesburg.
Surviving are her daughter, Ruth A. Rosol (Bill), Aurora, Colo.; a sister, Shirley J. Jacobson, Galesburg; two grandsons, Thomas D. Rosol (Judi), San Antonio, Tex., and Terry A. Rosol (Michele), Dillon, Colo.; three great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, and one brother.
She was a homemaker and also worked for Prairie Printing Co. and as receptionist for Dr. M. A. Marvelli, O.D.
She graduated from Galesburg High School in the Class of 1928.
She was a member of Meletomen Study Club and the Knox County Genealogical Society.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
A graveside memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday June 29, 2009 at Henderson Cemetery with Rev. Daniel Siems officiating. No visitation is planned. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Margaret L. Shay, Galesburg Chapel

She was born August 15, 1923 on a farm near Newman Grove, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Elmer Lee and Cecilia S. Swanson Anderson. She married Earl J. Shay on September 16, 1945 at First Lutheran Church in Galesburg. Her uncle Rev. Charles Bengtson and Rev. Leman Olsenius performed the ceremony. Her husband precedes her in death.
She is survived by a daughter, Margo (Bruce) Shively of Henderson, IL, a son, John (Laura) Shay of Galesburg; five grandchildren, Marla (Glenn) Robson of Jacksonville, IL, Annette Shively of Knoxville, IL, Jason (Jana) Shay of Knoxville, TN, Zachary Shay of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Dr. Beau Shay of Washington Twp., NJ; and six great grandchildren, Reanna and Kassandra Rose, Marleina and Bridgett Anne Robson, and Peija and Joah Shay.
She worked for Riggs Optical Company and later at Tucker Printing Company, both in Galesburg. She attended grade school and high school at District 61 in Newman Grove, NE. She graduated from Sparta Township High School in Wataga in 1941. She went on to attend Augustana College. She joined Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member there for 60 years.
Margaret was a longtime seamstress in the community, including helping her daughter in the theater department at Knox College. She also took great interest in her family’s sporting events, attending games of her husband, son, and grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 12:00 noon Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Jan Bengtson will officiate. Visitation will be 6:30-8:00 PM Friday at the chapel. Mrs. Karla May Smith Benson Crouse, Galesburg Chapel

She was born September 27, 1979 in Ft. Madison, IA the daughter of Mahlon D. Smith and Karol May Flickinger Smith.
She is survived by her parents, Karol (Tom) Smith of Galesburg and Mahlon (Marty) Smith of Dahinda, IL; two sons, Tyler and Logan Benson; her common law husband, Brian Crouse of Newry, SC; one brother, Derek Smith of Wataga, IL; one niece, Emma Smith of Oneida, IL; her maternal grandmother, May O. Flickinger of Williamsfield and her paternal grandparents, Dean and Marge Smith of Dahinda. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Charles E. Flickinger and a daughter, Karma May Crouse.
She attended Lincoln Elementary School in Ft. Madison, IA and later attended ROWVA High School. She began working when she was fifteen as a dishwasher and later assumed the title and duties of head cook at Jimmy’s in Wataga. She worked for Royal Cleaning and OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg. While living in Wataga, she attended Bethel Baptist Church. She also worked for the Double Take Bar & Grill in Williamsfield before moving to South Carolina. In South Carolina, she worked at numerous schools in the cafeteria as head cook. Her last employer was Oconee Medical Center in Senica, SC as an Environmental Services Supervisor.
She was a devoted, dedicated and loving mother to her boys. They were her pride and joy and her whole life. She enjoyed spending quality loving time with not only her sons, but also with friends and family. She collected pandas as her hobby. All her activities were centered around her family.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday June 27, 2009 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Kirk Kendall will officiate. Mr. Charles R. “Chuck” Schleich, Abingdon Chapel

He was born on July 4, 1935 in Fulton County, IL near Ellisville to William Byron and Zelpha Mae (Schrodt) Schleich. He married Betty J. Miller on June 13, 1954 in Macomb. He later married Juanita G. Cox on November 21, 1987 in Macomb.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Juanita; his children, Deborah West of Galesburg, Cindy (and Pat) Flaherty of Galesburg, Charles W. Schleich of Avon and Rhonda (and William) Cassell of Galesburg; three step-children, Clifford (and Deb) Elliott, Brad (and Tina) Elliott and Tammy Hayburn all of Monmouth; 7 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, 9 step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (and Teresa) Schleich of Monmouth; four sisters, Rose (and Don) Gianessi of Pekin, Ruth Quigley of Moline, Alice (and Larry) Plate of Adair and Mary Jane Schleich of Abingdon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother, two grandchildren, two step-sons and one step-grandson.
Chuck graduated from Macomb High School. He worked at the McDonough County Farm Bureau for two years, Algonquine Redi Mix for eight years, farmed in the Abingdon area for 45 years, retiring in 2006. He then worked part-time for RYCO Ag Products in Bushnell for two years.
He was a member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge #185 and was a 32nd degree mason. He was also a member of the Shrine. He enjoyed history especially the Civil War Era and he like to travel.
Family was very important to Chuck and he loved spending as much time as he could with all of them.
Funeral service will be at 10:00 am Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday at the chapel.
In honor of Chuck, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Mr. Duane E. “Dewey” Watkins, Abingdon Chapel

He was born on March 8, 1930 near London Mills, a son of Herschel D. and Jennie (Brown) Watkins. He married Carrol L. Ray on November 11, 1949 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Jeralyn (and Lou) Ohler of Oquawka, Linda (and Scot) Hulet of RR Galesburg, Nancy (and Bob) Kidwell of London Mills and Jill (and Stu) Barden of Peoria; 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Junier “Fuzz” (and Lena) Watkins of London Mills; a sister, Rosalie Moore of Galesburg.
Duane retired from Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg. He also farmed and did accounting and income taxes from his home for many years.
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Friday, June 26, 2009 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel followed by a graveside service at the Abingdon Cemetery.

Mr. Nels Sheldon Pierson, Galesburg Chapel

He was born July 10, 1931 in Knoxville, IL, the son of Merwyn F. and Isabel Sheldon Pierson. He married the love of his life, Norma Jean Roach on June 27, 1954 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on December 14, 2006.
He is survived by a daughter, Shari (and Michael) Durbin of Boise and 3 grandchildren, Ashley, Ryan, and Stacey Durbin.
Nels was a flight instructor for TWA for 30 years and absolutely loved it.
He served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954 during the Korean War and was stationed in Key West, FL.
Graveside service will be 2 PM Friday, June 26, 2009 in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Military rites will be provided by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. There will be no visitation. Mr. Mark Wayne Johnson, Abingdon Chapel

Mark was born on May 16, 1966 in Peoria, IL, a son of Charles and Carol (Townsend) Johnson. He married Teresa Drawyer on July 20, 1991 in Kewanee. She survives.
He is also survived by two sons, Nathan and Cody, both at home; his parents, Charles and Carol Johnson of London Mills; a sister, Julie (and Steve) Nell of London Mills and his grandmother, Winnie Townsend of London Mills.
Mark was preceded by his paternal grandparents, his maternal grandfather, Carl Townsend and by an uncle, Don Townsend.
He graduated from Spoon River Valley High School in 1984. He then served in the US Navy in Norfolk, VA from 1984 until 1988, obtaining the rank of machinist mate petty officer 2nd class. He then attended Western Illinois University in Macomb graduating in 1991. Mark worked as a manufacturing engineering manager at Heat & Control near Galesburg for 16 years.
His hobbies included hunting, cars and tractor pulls. He was a member of the Abingdon Road Knights car club.
Cremation will be accorded. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, June 26, 2009 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Rev. Paul Dinges will officiate. Military rites will be accorded following the service by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday, June 25, 2009 at the chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Nathan and Cody Johnson Education Fund, which will be established at the Abingdon Banking Center.

Mr. Thomas John Machura, Galesburg Chapel

70, of 1598 N. Prairie St., Galesburg died at 2:34 AM Friday June 12, 2009 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born September 16, 1938 in Chicago, IL the son of John and Martha Jozwiak Machura. He married Nancy McNichols in Chicago in 1970. She survives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Ann in 1983, two brothers and one sister.
He served as an officer for three years in the United States Navy.
He worked as an insurance underwriter for 40 years, retiring in May 2002. He graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1956 and Dartmouth College in 1960. He was a member of the St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Chicago. Tom enjoyed reading the history of World War II. He loved classical music, mainly Mahler. He walked three miles a day until he became ill.
Memorial Mass will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, 10134 S. Longwood Drive, Chicago. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 PM Wednesday June 17, 2009 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Prayer service will be at 7:00 PM with Rev. Joseph Presley. Mr. Paul M. Stauffer, Galesburg Chapel

He was born August 9, 1923 in Barry, IL to Arthur M. Stauffer and Lelia Funk Stauffer. He was reared and educated in Oneida, IL, graduating from Oneida High School in 1941. Paul served honorably in the Navy during World War II. He married Mildred Johnson of Altona in September 1950, who preceded him in death in 1979. Also preceding him in death were a sister, Lavon V. Mitchell and brother, Dale A. Stauffer, as well as his daughter-in-law, Natalia Stauffer this past November.
Survivors include a son, Dale Stauffer of Ramona, CA, daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Chris Burkhart of Knoxville, TN, two granddaughters, Zazil Stauffer and Annalise Burkhart, and one great-grandchild, Elijah Roed. He is also survived by ten much-loved nieces and nephews and their families, including special nieces, Joy Bledsoe and Carolyn Olson.
Paul was an employee of Knox County Oil Company/Spoon River FS for many years in several capacities including sales and as manager of the Victoria Elevator facility. He received several sales awards and forged lifelong friendships with many in the farming communities he served. He also had a farm southeast of Altona and was a member of farm organizations including Farm Bureau. Paul was a founding member of Bethany Baptist Church in Altona and attended West Hills Presbyterian Church in Knoxville TN.
A celebration of Paul’s life and faith will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 7pm at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Galesburg, IL with Curtis Bledsoe officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7pm. Burial will the following day at 10am at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg. Paul’s wishes were that instead of flowers, any memorials be made to the Galesburg Rescue Mission, 435 E. 3rd Street, Galesburg, IL 61401 or Berean Christian School, 2329 Prosser Road, Knoxville, TN 37914. Helen Marie Edwardson, Galesburg Chapel

79, formerly of Knoxville, died at 12:42 AM Saturday, June 20, 2009 in Woodridge Supportive Living Center, Galesburg.
She was born November 19, 1929 in Columbia, MO, the daughter of Elwood Henry and Bessie James Betz.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Terri (and Brian) McFarlin of Shelby, NC and Linda (and Rick) Thompson of Alpha, IL, 4 grandchildren, Danny (and Jenn) McFarlin, Kaylee McFarlin, Chelsea Waugh, and Taylor Waugh, and a great granddaughter, Olivia McFarlin. She was preceded in death by a son, Greg Edwardson in 1984, 3 brothers, and a sister.
Helen was a meat wrapper at the former A & P Grocery Store for 4 years and worked at the Northgate Bowling Alley Lounge for 10 years.
She enjoyed furniture refinishing, quilting, painting, and metal detecting.
Cremation will be accorded. Memorial visitation will be 5 to 7 PM Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be later in the Alpha Cemetery.
