Mrs. Doris (Lempke) Dyke, Galesburg Chapel

Services for Doris (Lempke) Dyke , age 94, of Sioux Falls, SD (formerly of Ottawa and Galesburg, IL), who died Saturday, January 23, 2010, will be held at 12:30 PM, Saturday, January 30th at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Galesburg, IL with interment following at Linwood Cemetery.
She is survived by: daughter, Rebecca (Arnold) Osmundson of Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Cynthia Osmundson of Northfield, MN, Greg (Nicole) Osmundson of Sioux Falls and Jeff (Tammy) Osmundson of Leawood, KS; great grandchildren, Jacob, Erik, Isaac, Madelyn, Makayla, Katie, Olivia, Emma, Joe and Lily; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, David in 1981, parents, her four siblings, one nephew and one niece.
The family lived in Ottawa for 34 years, retiring to Galesburg (Dave’s hometown) in 1977. They were members of Galesburg First Lutheran Church. Doris was a 17 year volunteer for Knox County Red Cross, organizing help for and working on the mobile blood drives. She moved to SD in 1997 to be near family, most recently living at Good Samaritan Village.

Mrs. Betty Kay Ubben, Galesburg Chapel

81, of 1567 Maple Ave., Galesburg, IL died at 9:15 AM on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at her home.
She was born November 30, 1928 in Oak Park, IL the daughter of Delbert and Grace Lucile Byers Heck. She married Louis Edward “Pete” Ubben on March 27, 1948 in Pekin, IL.
She is survived by two daughters, Ellen Elizabeth Jenkins of Murray, UT and Julie Kay Fitton of Inverness, IL; and three grandchildren, Jessica and Jeremy Jenkins and Marie Fitton. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Eric Louis Ubben and one brother, Don Heck.
She was a homemaker. She has lived in Galesburg since 1948. She graduated from high school in 1946 and attended University of Illinois. She was a member of the Junior Women’s Club, the Cottage Hospital Service Guild, Phi Mu, FISH and the Galesburg Civic Art Center. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Galesburg. She had a passion for the game of Bridge that she enjoyed playing with her friends for many years.

Mrs. Myrtle Sayrs Larson, Galesburg Chapel

She was born April 11, 1926 in Olar, SC to James Arthur and Letha Mae Bessie Zissett Joyner. She married Melvin E. Sayrs in Charleston, SC. He preceded her in death in 1981. She latter married Ted Larson in Knoxville.

Surviving is a daughter Betsy (and Max) Utsler of Olathe, KS, a daughter-in-law Diana Sayrs of Williams Bay, WI, 3 grandsons Troy (and Kim) Squire of Eudroa, KS, Travis Squire of Cuba, MO and Joshua Squire of Olathe, KS, and a great-grandson Jon Charles Squire of Eudora, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Jim Sayrs.

Myrtle and her husband Mel owned and operated Mel’s Red and White Food Store in Knoxville for 30 years. She was especially proud of her three grandsons and the special joy in her life was her great grandson Jon Charles Squire.

Mr. Earl Gordon Findahl, Galesburg Chapel

He was the son Mabel and Harry Findahl of Galesburg. He Graduated from Galesburg Senior High in 1935. He enlisted in the Navy and fought in World War II.
After the war, he returned to Galesburg to raise a family. He worked at Terry Lumber Company and Rowe Manufacturing. He was on the council at Trinity Lutheran Church and became a Mason. He moved to St. Louis, MO, where he became owner of Fleishel Lumber Company. He was active in the Hardwood Association of America.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Kenneth Findahl, Wayne Findahl, and Dale Findahl, his son, Kirk, first wife, Frances, and his second wife of nearly 50 years, Marlene. He is survived by 3 daughters, Marilyn Wolf of Concord, California and Rebecca Findahl and Sharon Redington, both of Galesburg, 3 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 3 sisters-in-law, Beulah Findahl and Beth Redfern, both of Galesburg and Susan (and Tom) Acker of Rushville..
Graveside service will be at noon Friday, January 29, 2010 in Rushville Cemetery, Rushville, IL. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Navy. She was born January 20, 1939 in Alexis, IL the daughter of Joseph Sylvester and Vera Helen Wall Riggs. She married Thomas C. Mullhatten, Sr. on September 28, 1957 in Burlington, IA. He died July 13, 1986.
She is survived by two sons, Leon Mullhatten of PA and Thomas Carr Mullhatten, Jr. of Galesburg; three daughters, Betsy Lee (Milo) Likes and Helen (Steve) Medina, both of Galesburg and Karen (Ricky) England of Rock Springs, WY; a brother, Dale (Shirley) Riggs of Galesburg; a sister, Joyce Norris of Galesburg; thirteen grandchildren, Tammy (Chris) Folger, Milo Likes, Jr., Thomas Likes, Racheal Medina, Steve Medina, Jr., Blaine Mullhatten, Sabrina Johnson, Atricia (Geno) Ramo, Samantha (Chris) Damitz, Bradley Mullhatten, Tabatha Mullhatten, Robert Mullhatten, Ashley England; and eight great grandchildren, Trevor Folger, Casey Folger, Mackenzie Taylor, Shawn Taylor, Jr., Malia Ramo, Hailey Damitz, Chris Damitz, Jr. and Addisyn Mullhatten. She was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Riggs.
She was a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Knox County Nursing Home. She retired in 1991. She graduated from Galesburg High School in 1957 and Carl Sandburg College Nursing Program in 1973. She enjoyed Bowling, Bingo, and going to the Boat.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11:30 AM Friday January 29, 2010 at Henderson Cemetery, Henderson, IL. The Rev. Milton Marquith will officiate. Miss Teresa Ann McDermand, Galesburg Chapel

45, Altona, IL, died at 6 PM Monday, January 25, 2010 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center, Galesburg.
She was born July 31, 1964 in Lincoln, NE, the daughter of Ronald “Ray” Faris and Beverly Kay Walker. She was adopted by Clifford Paul McDermand and raised by him and her mother.
She is survived by her fiancée, Bruce Lefler of Altona, 2 sons, David Manning, 25, of Galesburg and Matthew Manning, 20, of Kewanee, IL, sons of Kevin Manning, her parents, Clifford and Beverly McDermand of Camp Point, IL, a grandson, Peyton Manning, a brother, Richard (and Marcy) Faris of Wisconsin, and 2 sisters, Mary Leezer of Camp Point and Terri (and Albert) Sterling of Arizona. She was preceded in death by her father, Ray Faris in 2006.
She grew up in rural Bradford, IL and graduated from Toulon High School. She lived in Texas for a time, graduated from college, and worked as an accountant. Upon returning to Illinois, Teresa was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Church of Altona.

Mr. Dale E. Swanson, Abingdon Chapel

He was born on November 11, 1917 in Cedar Township, Knox County, IL to Ernest A. and Ella (Pierson) Swanson. He married Vivian Stokoe in February of 1942 in Altona. She preceded him in death in 1983. He was also preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Marjorie Swanson, Doris Graham and Ruth Johnson, and a son-in-law, Fred Friedrich.
Dale is survived by three sons, Eric (and Sharen) Swanson of London Mills, Alan (and Barbara) Swanson of Normal and Steve (and Beth) Swanson of Monmouth; two daughters, Linda (and Richard) Hollenberg of Kirkwood and Patricia Friedrich of Sarasota, FL; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; and his dear companion, Margaret Kilpatrick of Galesburg.
He graduated from Altona High School in 1935. He then attended Knox College and graduated with a Bachelor of Art Degree in 1939. Dale was a member of the ROTC at Knox College. He served in the Army from 1942 until 1946 during WW II in the south Pacific at the 85th Fighter Wing Headquarters as the Chemical Officer Major.
Dale was a farmer and farmed for over 50 years retiring in 1993.
He was a member of the Knox County Genealogical Society, OAKS in Galesburg, the Illinois Valley Fox Hunters Association, the Galesburg Rifle Club, National Rifle Association, and Warren County Farm Bureau. He also served as a volunteer for the Sky Watch CB Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and mentoring (advising) his friends and family. He was a very loving father and grandfather.

Mrs. Kelli Joanne Johnson-Smith, Abingdon Chapel

She was born on March 31, 1965 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Galesburg, the daughter of Edward “Dan” and Barrie A. (Dunlap) Johnson. She married Jerry K. Smith.
Kelli is survived by her daughter, Cassidy Jolynn Smith at home; her mother, Barrie Schaffer of Abingdon; her father, Dan Johnson of Abingdon; her siblings, Mark D. (and Chrystal) Johnson of Macomb, Jennifer (and Matt) Schaffer-Foist in California and Dana (and Shawn) Kennett of Knoxville; her special friend, Dave McCune; her maternal grandfather Lyle Dunlap of RR Galesburg; her paternal grandmother, Maxine Collins of Abingdon; her aunts, Kristy Austin, Heather Rice and Nancy Pieper, three nieces, three nephews and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Helen Dunlap, her paternal grandfather, Fred Johnson and a sister-in-law, Lisa Johnson.
Kelli grew up in Abingdon and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1983. She then attended Robert Morris College in Carthage, graduating in 1985. She was a 911 dispatcher for the city of Galesburg for 10 years. Her hobbies included gardening and spending time with her daughter.
To celebrate her life, a service will be at 11:00 am Monday, January 25, 2010 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church. Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday, January 24, 2010 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.

61, 500 E. Victoria St., Wataga, IL, died at 6:10 PM Sunday, January 17, 2010 at home.
He was born August 22, 1948 in Phelps County, MO, the son of George W. and Alma Leona Robertson Anderson.
He is survived by his wife, Donna, 2 sons, James Anderson of Galesburg and Todd Anderson of North Carolina, a step son, Scott (and Lisa) Sloan of Oquawka, IL, 3 grandchildren, the mother of his son James, Cyndi Anderson of North Henderson, IL, a brother, Ed Anderson of Phelps County, MO, and 3 sisters, Thelma Mathews of Springfield, MO, and Pauline Mapoli and Sharon Close, both of Florissant, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Chet was a heavy equipment lineman for Sprint/Centel Telephone Company for 27 years. For the past 10 years, he and his wife have owned and operated The Corral on Grand Ave. Chet enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and playing golf.
