Debbie & family,
I’m very sorry to hear about Dan’s passing. I remember having a lot of good times w/ Dan. Back when we were schoolmates I used to go out to the farm & jump on his trampoline. It was a blast.
In High School, we used to get under Mr. Hurlbutt’s skin in Industrial Arts class by goofing off, as did quite a few of the other guys. I think we both spent a little time in the principal’s office, but we still had a good time in there.
I remember Dan having a gold or brown ’63 chevy w/ a 6 cylinder engine, and one night we were both uptown at the activity center where Tom’s bike shop was later located. (If memory serves me, the activity center had a bunch of pinball machines as it’s main attraction.)
For some odd reason we both climbed on top of each other’s cars & were jumping up and down. We must have been an odd sight to anybody who happened to be passing by.
I also remember Dan’s ’63 red Ford Galaxie, with the rear end jacked up, and 4 speed. I think he might have had that car when you two were dating, and I also remember his red ’70 or ’71 SS Chevelle. Back in the muscle car era, we guys remembered other guys’ cars, because our cars were such a big part of our identities.
I didn’t see Dan very often in later years, as I’d left Abingdon. I was back one weekend & went to a football game & saw Dan there.
I asked him if his son was playing that night & Dan said: “Playing? Hell, he graduated, got married & I’m a grandfather.”
I’ll miss Dan, but I’ll always remember the good times we had in our school days.
Sincerely,
John Cage

Big daddy, To a man that has touched my heart and life in so many ways.I am so hurt from this tragedy as all your family and friends are.I thought of you as a dad just like your own kids do.We had alot of great times together; family vacations, fishing trips near and far away, basketball at your house, swimming, workin on all kinds of projects(even if we didnt know totally what to do to fix them)and just good times of talks and laughter. You always could bring out the best of any situation.I will cherish those times and numerous others.I will do my best to keep this wonderful family together, laughing, growing closer and just being and doing the things we all loved to do together. I know you would want this from all of us,as you were big on family relation.I will dearly miss you,it wont be the same for a great while, but we can pull through for us and you. goodbye my friend, and 2nd Dad. Love Big Senior
