Mrs. Roberta Joan Reeder, Galesburg Chapel

Reeder, Roberta 79, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at her home.
She was born Dec. 12, 1933, in Plymouth to Chester and Wanda (Meredith) Beckerdite.
After graduating from Augusta High School in 1951, she attended St. Francis School of Nursing in Macomb and became a registered nurse in 1954.
She married Donald Gene Reeder Aug. 31, 1954, in Rushville.
She worked as a nurse in Macomb and Champaign while her husband was completing his undergraduate studies and attending the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Later she was integrally involved in both her husband’s veterinary practice and their farming operation. She delighted in her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband; her brother, Chester Kay (Carol) Beckerdite of Colchester; her daughter, Mary (Michael) Panther of Galesburg; her son, Scott (Joan) Reeder of Spaulding; seven grandchildren, Megan (Herman) Wang, Reed (Deanne) Panther, Ellen Reeder, Devin Reeder, Grace Reeder, Anna Reeder and Caitlin Roberta Reeder.
She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Reeder; her parents; and a sister, Barbara Hamilton.
She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Galesburg. She helped lead church mission trips to Honduras and Costa Rica.
In addition to attending the activities of her grandchildren, she enjoyed traveling with her husband to the Soviet Union, Poland, China, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand and Cuba. She was one of the original Reading Buddies at Nielson School, where she served students for many years.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Galesburg. Mary Runge will officiate. Friends may call 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Brooklyn Cemetery in Schuyler County. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Illinois Cancer Care Foundation or the Galesburg Public Library New Building Fund. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.

  1. Roberta was a wonderfully kind and gentle person. It was my real pleasure to know her from our days in veterinary school when Don did barbering in their PGU home in Champaign.
