Mr. Dean A. “Swede” Nelson, 84, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 4:28 pm Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Seminary Manor Nursing Home.

He was born November 6, 1933 in Galesburg the son of Hilding O. and Hazel Johnson Nelson. He married Eda “Marlene” Nelson in Chicago, Illinois on July 9, 1955. She survives.

Also surviving is son, Bruce Nelson of Galesburg; three daughters, Sherry Nelson (Andrew Wright) of Raleigh, North Carolina, Lori Greer (Jeff) of Portage, Wisconsin and Penny (David) Cepiel of San Antonio, Texas and five grandchildren, David, Alexandra, Chelsea, Brandon and Lauren. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Paul Swenson.

Dean served in the US Air Force from 1952-1956 as an Airman 1st Class.

He worked for Maytag Corporation for 42 years, retiring in 1995. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1951. Dean was a member of the Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 and a member of the International Association of Mechanics and Aerospace workers #2063. He was a member of the Covenant Church. Dean enjoyed gardening, fishing and volunteering at the American Legion Post. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Cub fan.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Rev. Frank Langholf will officiate. There will be no visitation. Cremation will be accorded. Military Rites will be conducted by VFW 2257/Legion Post 285 Veterans Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Research Association. The family would like to thank the Care Center of Abingdon, Seminary Manor and Harbor Lights Hospice for all their wonderful care they provided to Dean.
