Mr. Dewayne Leigh Magnuson, 79, of Galesburg, Illinois passed away at 7:35 am Thursday, September 20, 2018 at his home.
He was born September 23, 1938 in Galesburg, Illinois the son of Chester D. and Erica M. Anderson Magnuson. He married Peggy R. Bloomfield on April 26, 1959 in Woodhull at the Bethany Lutheran Church.
Dewayne is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy R. Magnuson of Galesburg; his daughter, Rhonda (Mark) Rapp of Galesburg and four grandchildren, Thomas A. and Jessica L. Rapp of Galesburg, Sabrina D. (Chris) Mosier of Spartanburg, South Carolina and Seth G. Griswold of San Diego, California; a niece, Jennifer Magnuson and a nephew, Karl Magnuson. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Tara D. Magnuson Hall, his parents, and a brother, Glen C. Magnuson.
Dewayne spent his early years on a farm east of Woodhull and graduated from Alwood High School in 1956. He later graduated from Lincoln Barber College, East Moline in 1958. He worked with his uncle, Lambert Sanquist as a barber before moving to Galesburg in 1959 and was employed at Kelly’s Barber Shop on South Prairie Street. He purchased that shop and spent 55 years in two locations on South Prairie Street, a total of 60 years. He enjoyed his work and his many customers in the Galesburg and local communities. His beloved Scottie, George, accompanied him to the barber shop on many occasions.
Dewayne was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church for 57 years and was president of the Barbers Local #289 for several years. He enjoyed his family and working in his yard. He loved attending auctions, antique shows and barber seminars.
Memorial Services are scheduled for 11:00 am Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. Frank Langholf will officiate. Family will receive friends following the service. Cremation will be accorded and burial will be held at a later date at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church (Capital Campaign Projects) and Harbor Lights Hospice who lovingly cared for him in his final days with cancer.
