Mr. Edward Alstedt Obituary

Mr. Edward Eugene “Gene” Alstedt, 86, formerly of Galesburg, died September 8, 2018 in Normal, Illinois.

Gene was born in Alexis, Illinois, the son of Arthur and Frances (Reem) Alstedt.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Katherine; two daughters, Deborah (and Patrick) Garner of Downers Grove and Marian (and Dave) Schulz of Bloomington; a son, Russell Alstedt of Mesa, Arizona; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters.

Gene was raised and educated in Alexis, graduating from Alexis High School in 1950.  He had lived in Galesburg since 1956, moving to Normal in April.  He worked as a postal clerk of the United States Postal Service for 30 years before retiring in 1995.  His love of driving led him to enjoy a post-retirement job with Nu-Way Transportation moving inter-library loan items.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church.  He was also a former member of the Kiwanis Club in Galesburg, Lake Bracken Country Club, and the Miata Club. He also was an avid Chicago Cub’s baseball fan.

Cremation will be accorded.  No visitation or service is planned.  His remains will be scattered in East Linwood Cemetery at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Galesburg.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel is handling arrangements for the family.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
