Mr. Gerald H. Springer

Mr. Gerald H. Springer, 86, of Galesburg, died at 4:07 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2018 in Unity Point Health Peoria, Illinois.

He was born August 31, 1931 in Plymouth, Illinois, the son of Olan J. and Eula A. (Kitch) Springer. He married Hope E. Foster on January 20, 1959 in Macomb, Illinois and she preceded him in death November 3, 2015.

He is survived by two sons, Derald H. Springer of Galesburg and Jonathan L. Springer of Syracuse, New York; one daughter, Darl Hope Springer of Galesburg; one brother, Lon A. (Janice) Springer of Good Hope, Illinois; six grandchildren, Jill Carlson, Bret Carlson, Joi Carlson, Caleb Springer, Cassandra Springer and Cameron Springer and seven great-grandchildren, Aayliah H. Coleman, Ai’yanna M. Coleman, Arianna G. Coleman, Angel C. Coleman, Amiya R. Coleman, Ava A. Carlson and Izabella I. Carlson.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one granddaughter, Anna L. Carlson in 1984.

Gerald was a foreman for ADM for 31 years and retired in 1993.  He also was farmer his whole life.  He served in the US Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean War where he received three Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.  He could have had a Purple Heart but didn’t want to alarm his mother, who was ill, so he turned it down.  He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Galesburg.  Gerald loved the outdoors.  He enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping. 

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Bethel Baptist Church, Galesburg.  Rev. Scott Wilson will officiate.  Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel.   Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg with Military Rites by VFW, American Legion and AmVets Honor Guard.  Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church.   Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com
