World War II veteran, Harland M. Swanson, died Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the age of 93.
Harland joined the United States Navy at the age of 17, in 1942. He was an electrician on the USS Enterprise from 1942 to 1946. One of his favorite recent experiences was taking the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
Harland was born in Galesburg. He never married. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brothers, sisters, and one niece. He is survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
He will be missed by his friends at Hardees in Galesburg and Knoxville and his friends at St. Mary’s cafeteria. Harland was a friend to everyone.
After World War II, Harland worked in Galesburg as an electrician, then later worked for Butler Manufacturing. From the 1960’s to the 1980’s, Harland worked for Consolidated Foods in Davenport, Iowa. He was a computer programmer in the early days of computers.
Cremation will be accorded. His wish was to have no visitation or service. Memorial contributions in Harland’s name may be made to the Defenders of Freedom Veterans Home.
