Mr. Jeremy Turner Johnson

Mr. Jeremy Turner Johnson, 79, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 4:50 pm Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Cottage Hospital.

He was born December 19, 1938 in Galesburg the son of J. Alfred and Marie Thorsell Johnson. He married Judith L. Ryberg on June 6, 1970 at the First Baptist Church, Galesburg.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Judith Johnson of Galesburg; his son, Ben (Jennifer) Johnson of Snoqualmie, Washington; his daughter, Andrea (David) Oliver of Chicago, Illinois; his sister, Lois (John) Weborg of Princeton, Illinois, six grandchildren, Hans and Stian Johnson and Ethan, Annika, Bek and Jonas Oliver and twenty six nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Corrine Johnson and his brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Vilma Johnson.

Jeremy served in the US Navy Reserves from December 1956-February 1963. He later served with the US Coast Guard from 1989-2004 and was a boating safety instructor and finance officer.

He graduated from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1957, received his BA from North Park College in 1971 and his MS in Education from Western Illinois University in 1975. He also attended North Park Theological Seminary from 1961-1963. Jeremy taught at Elmhurst District from 1968-1969. He later taught for Galesburg District 205, including Nielson Middle School, Farnham Primary School, King Middle School and Nielson Elementary School from 1969-1995. After retiring he worked for the former Eagle’s Grocery Store.

Jeremy was a member of the Illini Quail Program, the Galesburg Rifle Club, and served on the board of directors for the Illinois Federation for Outdoor Resources for 30 years. He also volunteered for the Galesburg Railroad Museum, the Burlington Route Historical Society, and the Swedish American Historical Society. He was a member of the National Association for Amateur Radio. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts from 1967-1974. Jeremy served as a 40 year member and 10 year board member for Little John Conservation Club. He founded the children fishing contest and held an annual picnic for many years. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. He volunteered as a tutor for the Literacy Coalition. Jeremy was a member of Grace Anglican Church. He served on the Vestry, as a Sunday school teacher and was the Sunday school superintendent. He was a lay reader and Chalice Bearer and served as a lector. He read morning prayers at Marigold Nursing Home on Sunday mornings for 30 years. Jeremy enjoyed reading, fishing and hunting.

Memorial Services are scheduled for 11:00 am Friday, November 9, 2018 at Grace Anglican Church. Father Andy Ainley will officiate. Visitation will be 9:30-11:00 am Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Grace Anglican Church, Little John Conservation Club or to North Park University. Cremation will be accorded. Burial will be in Grace Church Cemetery.
