Mr. Raymond J. “Junior” Smith, Jr., 88, of Galesburg, formerly of Williamsfield, Illinois passed away at 5:17 pm Thursday, January 3, 2019 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria.
He was born September 29, 1930 in West Jersey, Illinois the son of Raymond J. and Emma Lucille Mosher Smith, Sr. He married Joan Warner on September 24, 1955 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death October 20, 1993.
Junior is survived by his children, Vicki (Mark) Heimann of Danvers, Illinois, Gary (Tamra) Smith of Dahinda, Illinois and Jason Smith of Cambridge, Illinois; sister, Darlene (Jim) Spencer of Peoria; three grandchildren, Amanda Meger, Neil Smith and Meagan Johnson; four great grandchildren and his special friend, Jo Tabb of Galesburg. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Earl Smith and sister, Mary Munts.
Junior worked for Mecco Mines in Victoria, Illinois for many years. He later worked for the maintenance department for the Village of Williamsfield. He served on the Village Board and was very active in various organizations in the Williamsfield community. He was a member of Little John Conservation Club. Junior graduated from Williamsfield High School in 1948 and was of the Methodist faith.
Junior enjoyed woodcarving and painting but his passion was fishing which he carried on this love to his children and grandchildren. He loved to keep busy and spend time with his family. Often, Junior would take a drive just to look for deer. He was ornery and could take it as good as he could give it.
Cremation will be accorded. Private graveside services will be held in Williamsfield Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Williamsfield Public Library or to the Charity of the Donor’s Choice.
