Seaton Moon, 89 of Hermon, passed away at 10:07 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2018 at the Marigold Rehab and Health Care Center in Galesburg.
He was born October 1, 1928 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital, the son of Jesse and Blanche (Stegall) Moon. He married Betty E. King on September 17, 1946 in Burlington, Iowa.
Seaton is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Betty; his cousin, Frederick Stegall of Abingdon; his children Linda (and Dave) VanWoert of Urbandale, Iowa and Tom (and Linda) Moon of Waterloo, Iowa; his daughter-in-law, Donna Moon of Waterloo, Iowa; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Rodger Moon and Charles Moon, one grandson, Brian VanWoert, two brothers, Martin Moon and Louie Moon, and two sisters, Anita White and Alice Feith Sharp.
He graduated from Avon High School and then married his high school sweetheart, Betty. He served a brief time in the Army before enrolling at the University of Illinois, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in Engineering. He started working for John Deere after graduation and worked there for 39 years. He was behind the knowledge of 6 Patents for John Deere.
Early in their marriage, Seaton enjoyed hunting and fishing in the countryside of Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, where he flew his Aeronca Chief for over 30 years. He was known by many family, friends and neighbors as the man who could fix anything. This led him to enjoying repairing vintage VW Volkswagens. Upon retiring, Seaton and Betty moved back home to the Moon family farm near Hermon, Illinois, where he farmed with his brother, Louie.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 9, 2018 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel. Pastor Danny Hunt will officiate. Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at the chapel.
