Mrs. Doris K. Nelson, 87, of Galesburg, Illinois died 8:20 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2018 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born October 7, 1930 at home on Rosary Hill Farm in Norwood, Illinois to Charles K. and Mabel E. Frymire Johnson. She met Lynn A. “Pudd” Nelson ice skating in Lincoln Park Lagoon at Lake Storey and they married December 17, 1954 in Alexis, Illinois. He survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Steven Paul (and Cindy) Nelson of Phoenix, Arizona and William “Bill” Lewis Nelson (and Lori Benson) of Galesburg, Illinois two daughters, Cathy Lynn Nelson of Iowa City, Iowa, and Lou Ann (and Curt) Kramer of Galesburg, Illinois, a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Margaret (and Clairus) Dew of Fort Wayne, Indiana and ten grandchildren, Shannon Michelle Beck-Bevan (and Stuart Bevan), Christine Marie (and Kyle Danielson), Amy Lynn Bronaugh (and Bryan Anderson), Eric Steven (and Sarah) Nelson, Tyler William Nelson (and Heather Trout), Stacey Elizabeth (and Ryan) Petranovich, Robert Arthur Nelson (and Alaina Mulnix), Andrew Tucker (and Caitlin) Nelson, Catherine Louise (and Bradly) Nelson, Molly Beth (and Austin) Lockwood, a step grandson Joshua (and Kasey) Kramer and 20 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Jane Louise Baker.
Doris graduated from Alexis High School, Alexis, Illinois in 1948. She then attended Western Illinois Teachers College, Macomb, Illinois from 1948 to 1949. She was affiliated with Alpha Sigma Tau Social Sorority at Western. She then graduated from Galesburg Cottage Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. She worked in Cottage Hospital O.B. and O.R. in 1952. She then worked at St. Francis Hospital and Franklin Hospital Urology Surgical Unit in San Francisco, California from 1952 to 1954. She worked for Dr. Frank M. Huff as a private scrub nurse from 1954 to 1955. She worked for 30 years at Galesburg Cottage Hospital O.R. in several capacities, including, Orientation Nurse, Assistant Supervisor, Interim Supervisor of the O.R. and Perioperative Instructor for patients anticipating surgery. She retired in 1993. She was a member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses where she served as secretary and was a two time convention delegate. She served as P.T.A. Secretary for Grubb, King, and Lombard Schools. She was a Cub Scout Leader at Grubb and Weston Schools. She was a board member of the Galesburg Cottage Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae and retired in 2015. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Galesburg and served on Stewardship, Barnabas, Prayer Chain and Endowment Committees.
Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2018 at First Lutheran Church in Galesburg. Pastor Pam Marolla will officiate. Visitation and luncheon will be 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2018 at the church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg.
