Geraldine M. “Gerry” Engman, 98, of Galesburg, died at 5 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2018 in the Knox County Nursing Home.
She was born June 12, 1919, in Galesburg, the daughter of Richard and Mary (Loring) McCarthy. She married Herbert B. Engman on July 2, 1939, in Galesburg. He preceded her in death May 1, 1994.
She is survived by three sons, Richard (Karen) Engman of Beavercreek, Ohio, Rodney (Gilta) Engman of Manassas, Virginia, and Raymond (Lynne) Engman of Edwards, Illinois; a daughter, Marilyn (Earl Edward) Klapp of East Galesburg; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; two brothers, John McCarthy and Larry McCarthy, both of Galesburg; and two sisters-in-law, Donna McCarthy and Janet McCarthy, both of Galesburg. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard McCarthy, Fred McCarthy, and Ronald McCarthy; a sister, Jessie McCarthy Neal; and three sisters-in-law, Mary Ann McCarthy, Jo Ann McCarthy and Mary McCarthy.
Gerry graduated from Galesburg High School in 1936 and lived her entire life here. She worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Nelson and his family. Gerry also worked in the catalog department at Montgomery Wards for several years. She was a 71-year member of the former Emmanuel United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Fellowship of Churches, Church Women United, the United Methodist Women, the Gleaners Circle, and the Dolls. Gerry was also active with Prime Timer Luncheons, OAKS, Habitat for Humanity, the Galesburg Rescue Mission, the Salvation Army, and with supporting many other local charities.
Gerry was a very loving lady and had a deep love for her family. She had a great sense of humor.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2018 at the chapel with Rev. James Ecklund officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Following the burial, friends are invited to the Knoxville American Legion.
