Mrs. Irene L. (DeSutter) Nelson

Abingdon - Funeral services for Irene L. Nelson, 96, of Abingdon, IL, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 13, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Abingdon, IL. Her nephew, Father Mark DeSutter will officiate.  Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery, Abingdon, IL. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 13 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel, Abingdon, IL, where a rosary will be recited at 9:50 a.m. Irene Nelson was a resident at the Abingdon Care Center.

Irene DeSutter was born July 15, 1921, in Moline, IL, the daughter of Maurice and Mary Grymonprez DeSutter. She married Donald E. Nelson April 25, 1942, in Rapids City, IL. He died January 18, 2002. Irene was the one of eight children. She lived in Abingdon for most of her life. She worked at Galesburg Research Hospital and retired in 1979. Irene enjoyed gardening, quilting and most of all – her family. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a long standing member of the Altar & Rosary Society. She also taught Sunday school for over 20 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Diane Gaskill, East Galesburg, IL, sons, Lyle Nelson, Abingdon, IL, Kenneth Nelson, Galva, IL, and Robert (Susan) Nelson, Lutz, FL; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Maurice (Darlene) DeSutter, Woodhull, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; 3 brothers and 3 sisters; granddaughters Kimberly Kauffman Eilenstine and Darla Nelson Rogers.
