Mrs. JoAnn (Hurt) Black

JoAnn Black, 85, of Hoffman Estates, formerly of Galesburg, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2018 in Alden Poplar Creek Nursing Home in Hoffman Estates.

She was born November 30, 1932, in Galesburg, the daughter of John and Marion (Reed) Hurt.  She married George W. Black September 12, 1954, in Galesburg.  He preceded her in death April 11, 2013.

She is survived by a son, John Robert (Rosanna) Black of Galesburg; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Black of Algonquin; three grandchildren, Jaclyn Rae (Derek) Viaene of Davenport, Iowa; Caitlin Alexandra (John) Guanzon of Galesburg; and Michael James Black of Galesburg; and two great grandsons, Hank Viaene and Logan Guanzon.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Hurt Jr.

Along with her husband, George, JoAnn was owner and operator of the Depot Hobby Shop for many years.  JoAnn loved all the people she met through the hobby shop, many of whom came by regularly just to see her.  She lived at Lake Bracken from 1954 to 2011.  JoAnn enjoyed gardening, china painting, sewing, knitting, and all types of crafts, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where she served in various roles which include Sunday school teacher and visitor to shut ins who were unable to attend church services.

Visitation will be 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel.  Funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the chapel with Rev. Daniel Siems officiating.  Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.  Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
