Mrs. Joan L. (Curless) Shawgo

Joan L. Shawgo, 90, of Galesburg, died at 9:10 p.m. Monday, December 30, 2019 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center Peoria.

She was born February 12, 1929 in Astoria, Illinois to Verne and Dorothy (Camp) Curless. She married Lawrence O. Shawgo on August 15, 1948 in Astoria.  He preceded her in death on November 27, 2012.  

Surviving are two sons, Michael (Patricia) Shawgo of Franklin, Wisconsin and Kevin (Lisa) Shawgo of Nevada, Iowa, a brother, Jerry (Karen) Curless of Englewood, Florida and five grandchildren Kyle, Erin, Colin, Owen, and Ethan. Also surviving is one brother-in-law Raymond (Edie) Shawgo Jr. and sister-in-law Marjorie Grover.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother. 

Joan graduated from Astoria High School in 1947.  She was a salesclerk for Ralston, Hanna, and Orwig’s Hardware in Galesburg for 25 years.  She was a member of the First Christian Church in Galesburg for 57 years. She was a past Elder, and Deacon.  She taught Sunday school for 17 years and she was a caring minister for the church and leader in Women’s fellowship for many years. 

Cremation will be accorded.  A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday January 11, 2019 followed by a time of fellowship at the First Christian Church, Galesburg. Rev. Martha Jean Fitch will officiate. Cremation burial will be at a later date in Harris Cemetery, Table Grove, Illinois.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church.  Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Service Galesburg Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
