Mrs. Lucille Gladys (Soland) Reed

Mrs. Lucille Gladys Reed, age 99, died peacefully at her home in Galesburg Saturday morning, March 10, 2018.

She was born on February 27, 1919, the first child and only daughter of Embret and Louise Arness Soland of Decorah, Iowa, and grew up on the family farm with five younger brothers.

Lucille was a graduate of Decorah High School and the University of Iowa School of Nursing in Iowa City, Iowa. She married Robert Waldo Reed on April 21, 1942, while he was beginning his service in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a pilot. They were married for seventy years.

In 1955, Lucille and Robert moved to Galesburg, where Robert practiced medicine for thirty-three years. They raised six children in Galesburg, three daughters and three sons. They loved playing bridge and traveling together, and were both active in their community.

Lucille was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and active in the Galesburg Women’s Club, Cottage Hospital Guild, Meals on Wheels, P.E.O Chapter W, Clio Club, and the Soangetaha Country Club.

Lucille loved all flowering plants and trees, and was happiest in her garden.  She was instrumental in establishing flower beds and reviving the wildflowers at the Soangetaha golf course.

Lucille is survived by two brothers, Norman Soland of Riverdale, Utah, and Eugene Soland of Kasson, Minnesota; daughter Janice Hellman (Ted) of Mill Valley, California, and son James Reed (Mary) of Seffner, Florida; twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert; three brothers; daughters Carrie Lebolt and Katherine Freeman; and sons Robert Reed and David Reed.

Cremation will be accorded. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Friday, March 23, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church. A coffee hour/reception will follow at the church. Private family burial will be later at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lucille Reed Garden Fund, Soangetaha Country Club, 238 N.
