Mrs. Mary Lou Irene Armstrong Mills, 88 of Courtyard Estates in Monmouth and formerly of Abingdon, passed away at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth.
She was born January 1, 1930 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Everett Glenn and Irene Marie Ryan Bartlett. She married John H. Armstrong on May 22, 1947 in Burlington, Iowa. He preceded her in death March 29, 1998. She later married Arthur Mills on October 8, 2006 and he preceded her in death February 17, 2017. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Mary Lou is survived by her children, Susan (and Tom) Tygrett of Roseville and John “JF” Armstrong of rural Cameron; two grandchildren, Deborah (and Austin) Sparrow of Roseville and Timothy Tygrett of Berwick; two great-grandchildren, Johnny Sparrow and Pepper Sparrow; her step-children, Jonathon (and Tonya) Mills of Iowa, Patrick (and Pam) Mills of Kewanee, Sally (and Tim) Patterson of Galesburg and Lisa (and Joe) Sparks of Galesburg; eleven step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
She lived in the Cameron area for over 40 years and was a former member of the Cameron Christian Church. She lived in Abingdon from 1992 to 2017 and has been a resident of Courtyard Estates in Monmouth the past 10 months. She worked at the Woolworth Store in Monmouth in her early years and later in the activity department at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville. She proudly volunteered at both Galesburg hospitals and also at area nursing homes.
Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, IL Route 150 North of Galesburg. Rev. Jack Wingate will officiate. There will be no visitation. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
