Mrs. Rita Ilene (Anderson) Clevenger

October 18, 1936 ~ August 24, 2018 (age 81)

Mrs. Rita Ilene Clevenger (nee Anderson) born October 18, 1936, peacefully passed away Friday, August 24, 2018, at 8:33 pm at Cottage Hospital in Galesburg.  Born at home, in the countryside of Bishop Hill, Illinois to Newell and Elsie Martin Anderson.  Rita was a long-time resident of Henderson, Illinois 

Rita is survived by her husband Jim Clevenger of 62 years whom she married on November 24, 1955, at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Galva, Illinois.  Also surviving are her daughters Tonya Hemphill (John) of Albuquerque, NM, Telisa Clevenger-Smith (Rod) of Lafayette, IN, Kim Curtis (Kenny) of Prairie City and son Kurt Clevenger of Wataga; five grandchildren: Jimmie Curtis, Mitchell Curtis, Lance Curtis, Alexandra Hemphill, and Pierce Hemphill, four great-grandchildren: Renley Curtis, Eli Curtis, Kendall Curtis, and Harper Curtis, brothers and sisters, Ralph (and Marcella) Anderson, Doug (and Marcia) Anderson, Bob (and Sandy) Anderson, Kathy Todd, Marty Anderson and Susie (and Tony) Miller and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Newell and Elsie Anderson, and brother Gary in his infancy.  

Rita loved her family and enjoyed spending time outdoors camping, gardening, tending to her flowers, and watching birds and wildlife.  As a lifelong homemaker she was well known for her ‘scratch’ cooking and baking. There was always room for more at the family table.

As a mother of two sets of twins she also enjoyed spending time with her friends of the Galesburg Mothers of Twins Club and sharing the successes, highlights, and challenges of raising two at a time.  Rita enjoyed further success representing the State of Illinois Mothers of Twins Club as President, and was instrumental in the creation of the organizations Double Doz-It cookbook. Never one to say no when asked to ‘lend a hand’, Rita also enjoyed supporting the community with her involvement with her childrens’ as president of the Parent Teachers Association, supporting community ice cream socials, sitting on the Henderson Village Board, and as a Galva High 1954 graduate participating with class reunion preparations.

Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel.  The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel with David Scholl officiating.  Graveside service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Prairie City Cemetery, Prairie City, Illinois.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the family for the Galesburg Rescue Mission or to Carl Sandburg College.  Online condolences may be made at
