Wanda J. Reading, 81, of Galesburg, died at 3:44 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2018 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
She was born July 25, 1936, in Conway, Arkansas, the daughter of Otis and Georgia (Helton) Mason. She was married to A.C. Hurbert and Jasper Reading. They both preceded her in death.
She is survived by three sons, James Ernest (Alice) Mason of Galesburg, Aubrey Wayne Hurbert in Arkansas, and William Patrick (Micky) Hurbert of Newton, Iowa; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Shaw of Galesburg, Hester Maltbia of Kansas City, Kansas, Oreanda Tyler of Galesburg, and Betty White of Galesburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Ronald Lee Hurbert and Damon Lamon Hurbert; a step daughter, Aurey Hurbert; two brothers, Benjamin Harris and Otis Mason Jr.; a sister, Ruby Davis; a grandson, Jason Lewis Hurbert; and a great grandson, Adohnas King Davis.
Wanda first worked in housekeeping at the old St. Mary’s Hospital. She then worked as a nurse’s assistant at Cottonwood Nursing Home and Knox County Nursing Home. Wanda worked at Gale Products for 10 years and had also worked as a nanny.
Wanda was an active member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir, an usher, on the Mother Board, enjoyed Bible study, and was superintendent of Sunday school. She enjoyed fishing and gardening, especially flowers and plants.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2018 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Darrell A. Bagwell officiating. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
