Arthur Wolford Obituary

82 of RR Abingdon, died at 11:25 pm Sunday, June 1, 2008 at Galesburg Cottage Hospital following complications while recovering from a fall that occurred in April. He was born on September 28, 1925 in Galesburg, IL to Stanley and Alice Tolley Wolford. He married Norma Jean Milward on July 9, 1950 at the Cameron Christian Church in Cameron, IL. Art is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Norma Jean Wolford; two sons, John (and Doris) Wolford of RR Abingdon and Rev. Mark (and Sue) Wolford of RR Bushnell; 5 grandchildren, Phillip Wolford, Daniel (and Cricket) Wolford, Matthew Wolford, Sarah (and Luke) Flessner and Dana (and Mike) Coffman; a sister, Patricia (and Harold) Dunlap of RR Abingdon; a sister-in-law, Jean Wolford of Wilmore, KY and several nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Rev. Marvin Wolford. Art has lived in the Abingdon area all his life. He attended Cross Lanes Country School and later graduated from Abingdon High School in 1943 as the class Salutatorian. He attended Western Illinois University in Macomb for a year and was drafted into the US Army and served his country during WW II. He was a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon. He was a farmer and owned and operated the Abingdon Milling Company for many years. He also crop dusted for several seed corn companies and was a former partner in the Monmouth Airport. He was a past director of the former Abingdon Bank and Trust Company. As a lifetime member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church, he served as a trustee of the church board and on many of the church committees. Art held ratings for flying single engine airplanes and helicopters. He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) for over 60 years. He loved to fly and was an accomplished instructor. He taught many of his family members and friends to fly. He had many friends and loved his wife and family very much. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel, 206 N. Washington St. Funeral service will be at 11:00 am Thursday, June 5, 2008 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church, located at 401 N. Washington St. in Abingdon. Rev. Paul Dinges and Art's son, Rev. Mark Wolford will officiate. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery with Military Rites by Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. Memorials in honor of Art may be made to the Abingdon United Methodist Church, the National Stearman Fly-In Foundation or to a charity of the donor's choice.
