Betty Moon Obituary

Betty Elizabeth Moon, 94, of Cedar Falls, died on May 1, 2023, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.  Betty was born July 3, 1928, the daughter of Arthur and Inez (Bearce) King.  She grew up in Avon, Illinois with one brother, Hubert, and one sister, Alma.  In her teenage years, she worked at the drug store in Avon, serving up ice cream to the people in town for the Saturday evening band concert.  Betty was a cheerleader for Avon High School and married her high school sweetheart, Seaton Moon Jr. in September of 1946.  After graduating high school, she accompanied her husband as he studied engineering at the University of Illinois.  During that time, she was raising her first two sons, Rodger and Tom.  The family moved to Waterloo/Cedar Falls in 1951 where she also raised Charles and Linda.  In 1999, Betty accompanied Seaton back to the family farm outside Hermon, Illinois where she lived until 2022.  In February 2022, she moved back to Cedar Falls.  During her years in Waterloo/Cedar Falls and at the farm Betty’s primary role in life was to be a wife to Seaton.  They were an inseparable team for 71 years.  She was completely devoted to supporting Seaton in any way she could, sharing his success in his career and life goals.  Betty embraced the role of homemaker better than anyone.  She actively raised four children and managed the household, even when the budget was tight.  Betty made sure her children had every opportunity to thrive. She was a Boy Scout leader and a Campfire leader for many years.  She was very active at United Church of Christ in Cedar Falls. Betty was in the morning circle and was always there to help in the kitchen for weddings and funerals.  Betty served her country as an election worker and a US Census Taker.  When grandchildren came along, she was always there for them.  She always was prepared for big family gatherings or unexpected guests showing up at the farmhouse lunch table. Betty was always the last person to sit down to a table.  She was an excellent cook and baker.  She always set a delicious table and everyone enjoyed her cakes and pies.  Especially the apple pies.  Betty led an active social life and became a friend to all.  She was an accomplished bowler and played any card game you could imagine.  She was active in bridge club right up through her 90’s.  Betty enjoyed making apple cider with her Orchard Hill neighbors, watching birds at her feeders, and following the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 2 sons, Rodger and Charles; a grandson, Brian Van Woert; a sister, Alma Riggins; and a brother, Hubert King.  Betty is survived by a son, David “Tom” (Linda) Moon of Waterloo; a daughter, Linda (David) Van Woert of Urbandale; a daughter-in-law, Donna Moon of Waterloo; 7 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren with one on the way.  There will be a visitation on Sunday, May 7, 2023, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories in Waterloo. An additional visitation will be held Friday, May12, 2023, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Home and Cremation Services Abingdon Chapel. A graveside service will follow at Abingdon Cemetery. Everyone is invited to the American Legion in Abingdon following burial.    Please direct memorials to Cedar Valley Hospice or the donor's choice.
