Betty Smith Obituary

55, of 405 ½ Jared St. died at 6:52 am Friday, May 6, 2005 at her home. She was born January 15, 1950 in Rock Island County, IL to Harold and Lucille Violet Shinn James. She was adopted and raised by Marion "Mac" and Marguerita McClure. She married Delbert Smith on June 27, 1970 in Henderson, IL. He survives. Also surviving are five sons, Mark Smith of Abingdon, Christopher Smith of Galesburg, Matthew Smith of Abingdon, Scott (and wife Kathleen) Smith of Beardstown and Andrew Smith of Galesburg; one brother, Harold (and wife Deanna) Shumaker of Abingdon; one sister, Sandy (and husband Dick) Rosenberg of Henderson; one half-brother, Harold (and wife Sarah) Sluyter of Abingdon; one half-sister, Betty (and husband Gary) Courter of Abingdon; 1 granddaughter, 3 step grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents, her adopted parents, 2 infant grandchildren and 1 half-sister, Shirley Pittman. She graduated from Galesburg High School. She was a homemaker and had lived in Abingdon since 1970. She attended the Gordon Behrents Center in Galesburg. She was a past den mother for Cub Scouts, was a past volunteer at the Hedding Grade School Kindergarten in Abingdon and a past member of Hedding Grade School PTA. She was a member of Colonial Baptist Church in Galesburg. Graveside service will be at 1:00 pm Monday at the Abingdon Cemetery. Rev. Dave Stroup will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 6:00 pm Sunday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel.
