Charles B. Shelton, 80, of Galesburg, Illinois, passed away peacefully in Indianapolis, Indiana, on May 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born October 1, 1945, in Vandalia, Missouri, to Maudie Cropp and William Shelton, Charles proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Vietnam Veteran. Following his military service, he worked for Butler Manufacturing and Burlington Northern, Knox College before retiring from District 205.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Jeannie Walker Shelton; his parents; his sisters, Stella Wray, Bessie Holman, Florine Dixon, and Jackie Bryant; and his brothers, Wilford Moore and Raymond Cropp.
He is survived by his children, Yolanda Sanders (Edward), Lisa Chavis (John), Charles A. Shelton, Eric Shelton, Joan Shelton (Carlos), Jean Joyce (Joseph), and Melvin Dickerson; his brothers, Lewis Shelton and Ronald Shelton; 22 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Charles found great joy in watching his grandchildren and took immense pride in their accomplishments. He enjoyed golfing, watching sports, and spending time with family and friends.
Cremation has been accorded. The family will have a private service at a later date at their loved one’s request.
